𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱

This week I received a message from a colleague I worked with more than 20 years ago.
It stopped me in my tracks.

In detail, he recounted a visit I made to their office during my time as CEO.
Not the speech I gave.
Not a strategic shift I announced.
Not the metrics, goals, or new initiatives we were rolling out that year.

What he remembered—after two full decades—was a moment of simple, genuine listening.

Of all the things that were happening that year—
• new offices opening,
• major strategy changes,
• onboarding new teammates,
• launching a new consulting service…

None of it is what stood the test of time.

Listening did.

His message was such a sobering, important reminder for me.
After 40 years in leadership, I can tell you this with complete honesty:

𝗜𝗳 𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻, 𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.
Not the polished words.
Not the bold announcements.
Not the innovative strategies.

Listening.

Because nothing communicates respect…
nothing communicates care…
and nothing affirms a person’s value more powerfully
than bringing your full presence to hear them.

His message is now tucked into my file of treasured notes—the ones I read on days when my spirit needs lifting, or when I need to remember what matters most.

And maybe that’s the reminder someone else needs today too:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀—𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹.

Most leaders I work with don’t talk about loneliness.
They talk about pressure.
About expectations.
About doing everything they can to hold things together.

But when we slow down enough to look underneath all of that…
there’s often a quiet ache they’ve been carrying alone.

Not because anything is “wrong.”
But because somewhere along the way, connection slipped out of reach.
The conversations became transactional.
The meetings stayed full, but the meaning felt somehow thinner.
And the leader — the one holding everything together — stopped feeling seen.

Loneliness doesn’t always look like sadness.
Sometimes it looks like distance.
Sometimes it looks like exhaustion.
Sometimes it looks like a leader who’s still showing up beautifully…
but feeling a little more hollow on the inside.

If that feels familiar, you’re not failing.
You’re human.

And that feeling isn’t a verdict.
It’s a signal.
A gentle call back to connection, presence, and being truly seen — not just as a role, but as a person.

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

For more than a year, I coached a remarkable executive—a Fortune 500 CEO whose results were celebrated across his entire organization. From the outside, he looked like a man at the mountain’s peak. Extraordinary performance. Deep trust from his teams. Recognition at the highest levels.

Week after week, we talked strategy, execution, culture, and the deeper work of personal leadership.

And yet… something always felt missing.

A few months ago, I decided to name it.

I opened our session quietly and said:

“You’ve succeeded at the highest level. Your people trust you. Your board admires you. And most would say there’s nothing left for us to work on. But I can’t shake the feeling that despite everything… the one thing missing is joy.”

He didn’t argue.
He didn’t deflect.
He paused, looked down for a moment, and nodded.

Even through a screen, it was a moment of truth — and it changed everything.

From that day forward, our conversations shifted—away from what he was achieving and toward why. We explored what he wanted now, at this stage of his life and leadership. We talked honestly about whether staying on the same path would bring the joy he hoped for… or whether something else was calling to him.

We worked through exercises and the kind of searching questions that only happen when trust runs deep.

In the end, he made one of the bravest decisions I’ve ever witnessed.

He chose a new chapter — one that would continue his success, yes… but would also expand his joy and deepen his impact.

And when he made that choice, it felt like a spark returned.
A part of him that had been quiet for years came back to life.

He wasn’t chasing something bigger or more prestigious.
He was choosing something truer — something that reflects the legacy he wants to leave.

To me, he is a hero.

𝗔 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂:
Where in your life is success high… but joy has quietly slipped away?

𝗜’ve been thinking a lot lately about joy.

Not the quick, fleeting kind that comes when everything goes right for a moment…
 but the steady, grounding joy that tells you you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

A few years ago, I reached a point in my career where everything looked perfect from the outside.
 I had the title.
 The results.
 The recognition.

And yet, one night, sitting alone in my office long after everyone had gone home, I realized something I never expected:

I had achieved everything I thought I wanted…
 but somewhere along the way, I had lost the joy that once fueled me.

That moment became one of the greatest turning points of my life.
It taught me this simple truth:
𝗝𝗼𝘆 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆.
 𝗝𝗼𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁.
