The single most important business process and technology lesson I've learned working at HubSpot from a start-up to where we are today, was to begin with the end in mind when it comes to back end business systems and technology. We had only the best. The rule still stands true.

We had the most tricked out an enterprise level Wiki for documentation, marketing systems, and sales tools that companies 10x our size used. We leveraged every inch of it and what was really remarkable at the time, is that our co-founders bought the licenses on day one (when there were 3! ).  

I'll never forget that first day I sat in seat. I knew we were building something and not playing it safe by the tools I had on hand.

Most sales managers are running on fumes. 
And the hardest part?
They don't really know any other way to operate.

Because when you're a sales manager, you’re always driving at 100 mph.

And even when you're “off”, you're still on. 

Sometimes literally: catching up on email, taking calls. 
Sometimes mentally: spiraling through a never ending to-do list.

It becomes a cycle of ‘normal’ quietly fueled by corporate hustle culture.

And I know, because I lived it.

I put my team first. I was available.
I owned top exec relationships, kept the pipeline squeaky clean, and made sure leadership knew my pulse was always on the business.

Pressure felt like the path to success.

Until it became the path to my breakdown.

I was physically present with my family, but mentally somewhere else.
I was great at hard conversations, but terrible at quieting my negative self talk.
I could read the temperature of any boardroom, but couldn't regulate my own internal state.

On the outside, I my career was climbing.
But inside, I was crumbling.  

Constant migraines and panic attacks became normal.

And then one day while having lunch with my parents, I collapsed (literally).

At 36, I learned I'd had a cerebellar stroke that temporarily left me unable to walk.

Doctors discovered I had a heart condition that 1 in 4 people have, yet very few ever experience stroke or TIA.

My genetics may have contributed to the event, but doctors felt the real fuel was my lifestyle:

Sitting 8+ hours per day
Skipping meals
Stress drinking
Sleeping like absolute crap
Basically, never ‘not’ working and letting my health take a back seat.

Salesforce taught me how to be an effective seller & leader: how to coach, inspire, motivate and multiply others’ talents.

But what I didn't realize was how important it was to actually take care of myself.

I preached balance and boundaries to my team, while quietly working after hours.

I'd schedule emails to send in the morning, so my team wouldn't feel pressure to work late, even though I was. 

When I wasn't 'on', I was thinking about work.

I spent 7 years at one of the best companies in the world, & I’m forever grateful for it.

But the thing even the best companies rarely teach their people is how to care for themselves.

It’s seen as “woo-woo” and fluffy.

Yet research from Harvard, the CDC, and NIH consistently shows that chronic stress is directly related to heart disease, stroke, cancer, hypertension, depression and burnout in otherwise healthy people under the age of 50.

Most people don’t realize how much constantly running on fumes is directly impacting their health.

Because when you’re working within a culture that is all doing it - it’s easy to overlook the signs.

Stress has become the new smoking habit of the modern era.
