Today is Rare Disease Day. And for our family, that means everything.

We’re raising three kids with PKU.

If incredible doctors hadn’t fought for answers years ago, if they hadn’t pushed, researched, tested, and refused to settle, our children would be living a very different life in 2026.

A life without many of the everyday abilities most of us take for granted.

Instead, I’m watching them step into adulthood.
I’m watching them learn how to manage PKU on their own.
I’m watching them thrive.

And I’m blown away.

I know so much of that strength comes from an incredible mom who followed every instruction, measured every gram, protected every detail, and—most importantly—never once made them feel less because of their PKU.

For 21 years, we’ve parented through doctor appointments, food calculations, insurance battles, emotional highs and lows. It hasn’t been harder than anyone else’s story.

It’s just been different.
Fuller.
Sometimes heavier.
Often more stressful.

So if you love someone caring for a child with a rare disease, here’s my one piece of advice:

**Be patient.**

If they seem exhausted…it’s because this takes energy.
If they seem stressed…it’s because details matter.
If they seem distant…it’s because they’re carrying more than you see.

Today, I’m grateful for my children’s health.
Grateful for the doctors who fought for answers.
Grateful for a mom who never quit.

And still hopeful for complete healing.

I teach Strategic Planning. My life is building plans. I love to strategize and figure out how best to develop a plan, work the plan and evaluate the plan. 

My greatest success is my family. Married to Tracie since 1997. Father to Rebekah, Robert, Zachary, Madison and Kai.

My wife and I passionately advocate for the Rare Disease Community and for Adoption. Three of our children have #PKU or Phenylketonuria, including our son that we adopted from China.

One high-producing employee can create more culture damage than you realize.
No offense to high performers. But there are “on paper” high performers and there are “team” high performers.

On paper, they look incredible:
✅ The salesperson whose numbers are off the charts.
✅ The project manager who hits every deadline.
✅ The VP who gets massive projects across the finish line.
✅ The regional manager who consistently outperforms the rest of the field.

This is the person leadership feels they have to keep happy. But if you look closer, something else is happening. No one internally wants to work with them. Teammates avoid collaborating with them. Support staff dread their emails.
Even their clients tolerate them more than they enjoy working with them.

Why? Because they speak at people, not with people. All AT. Not enough WITH.

They lead with pressure. They communicate through control. They talk down, interrupt, and bulldoze conversations. And because the numbers look good, organizations tolerate it.

I’ve led close to 1,000 presentations over the past 30 years. Inevitably, there’s someone in the room who fits the category above—skeptical, bored, clearly uninterested in the topic. And honestly, I understand the thinking.

If someone’s winning on the scoreboard, why would they change?
But here’s what many organizations miss:

Great numbers can hide toxic communication, until the culture starts breaking.
I once led a breakout session where one overly negative employee controlled the emotional temperature of the entire room.

👉 If he frowned, the managers frowned.
👉 If he crossed his arms, they got nervous.
👉 If he looked confused, they assumed the training was failing.

It was fascinating to watch. One person dictated the entire room. And sure, part of it was on me. There were areas where I could have been tighter. But the overall energy in the room was positive.

Except for that one person. Afterward, a manager complained about the session, largely because that high-performing employee didn’t like it. And that’s the danger.

When leaders build their culture around appeasing top performers, they slowly lose the rest of the team. Your best producers matter. But your culture matters more.

Because eventually the lone-wolf producer ends up exactly where their communication style leads them:

Successful…but alone.

The best leaders understand something powerful:
👉 You don’t just reward production.
👉 You reward how people treat other people while producing.

Because the healthiest organizations don’t just create top performers. They create people others actually want to work with. And that always comes down to one thing:

Learning to speak with people — not at them.

And if you’ve been in leadership long enough, you’ve probably seen this play out.
