As Regional Director of Operations overseeing Colorado and Arizona at Brighter Strides ABA Therapy, I lead our mission to provide exceptional Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services. In this role, I oversee strategic initiatives, operational improvements, and program development to ensure we deliver the highest quality of care to our clients.

In ABA therapy and in leadership - it’s easy to equate loud with confident.
The ones who speak up in meetings, lead sessions with energy, and take charge are often seen as “strong communicators.”

But here’s what we sometimes forget:
Silence doesn’t mean disinterest.
And quiet doesn’t mean passive.

Some of the most thoughtful, empathetic, and effective clinicians and clients are quiet observers.

They’re:

↳ Noticing the details others miss.

As BCBAs and leaders, it’s our job to create environments where quieter voices including our RBTs and clients can thrive.

6 Ways to Support Quieter Voices in ABA

1- Create calm spaces
Not every learner (or team member) thrives in noise and chaos.
Structured, predictable environments help both clients and staff focus.

2- Encourage written reflection
Some RBTs express ideas better through notes or messages than verbal discussions.
Likewise, some children respond better through visuals than conversation.

3- Respect processing time
Silence after a question isn’t avoidance - it’s thinking.
Wait. Breathe. Give space before repeating or prompting again.

4- Model inclusive communication
Ask quieter staff and clients for their input - before, during, or after sessions.
You’ll be amazed at the insight they bring when given time.

5- Match communication styles
Pair mentors, supervisors, or peers who understand their tempo.
Connection grows faster when styles align.

6- Celebrate depth, not just volume
A calm clinician can be a child’s anchor.
A quiet RBT can model emotional regulation better than any program goal.

The truth is - not all voices are loud.
Some heal through gentleness.
Some lead through stillness.
Some change lives one calm moment at a time.
