Enterprise Deals Are Won Before the First Meeting

Most sellers think enterprise deals are won in discovery.
They’re not. They’re won in research.

The reps who close 6- and 7-figure deals go 10 layers deeper - they know the org chart, board priorities, cost pressures, and even the CEO’s earnings-call language before a single email goes out.

When I was at Slack, we treated account research like a first meeting - because it was the first meeting.
Preparation built credibility before we even showed up.

If you want to shorten your sales cycle, start earlier.
Deals move faster when the buyer feels like you already know their world.

The difference between a $250K deal and a $1M deal is alignment - not effort.

Cross-functional deals have 6-12 stakeholders.

Most reps try to “manage” them.
Great reps orchestrate them.

That means mapping power early, identifying who owns budget vs. influence, and aligning their internal wins to your solution’s impact.

It’s not about selling - it’s about giving every stakeholder a reason to say “yes.”

The Most Underrated Skill in Sales Leadership: Translation

Your job as a leader isn’t just to motivate — it’s to translate.

You translate board goals into team focus.
You translate rep frustration into actionable coaching.
You translate messy pipeline data into a story that drives decisions.

The best leaders I’ve worked with didn’t just drive numbers — they created clarity.
In enterprise sales, clarity is culture.

Frameworks Don’t Close Deals — People Who Use Them Well Do

MEDDIC, SPICED, Force Management — all powerful tools.
But they’re only as good as the leader who reinforces them.

The goal isn’t compliance — it’s consistency.
A framework gives your team a shared language for complex deals.
But the magic happens when reps use it to think strategically, not just check boxes.

Teaching frameworks is easy.
Building habits around them is leadership.

Ten SaaS sales realities I’ve learned the hard way:

1) If you only hear good news, you are losing the deal. All deals have risk. Champions share risk. No risk shared means no champion. No champion means you lose.

2) The longer it takes to close a deal, the longer your buyer has to realize they are ok without your solution. No velocity, no deal. Time really does kill deals. 

3) Solving a problem doesn’t win deals. Solving THE problem does. Every exec has hundreds of fires burning - they only pay money and spend time to stop the fires that threaten to burn the whole thing down. 

4) More people constantly getting added to the evaluation committee isn’t often a good thing - it means nobody wants to take ownership of the decision.

5) Your buyers spend most of their calls with you multi-tasking. If you don’t quickly capture their attention and keep them constantly engaged, your calls are a waste of time.

6) No one believes your ROI projections. If the business case isn’t in your buyer’s language with their numbers, it’s not taken seriously.

7) Buyers are biased against sellers. Any time you sound the same as other sellers, you strengthen that bias. If you want to win, learn to sound different.

8) You can’t create compelling events (end-of-quarter discounts don’t count). The only consistent way to accelerate deals is to make the buyer’s status quo unbearable.

9) A poorly run deal with a strong executive connection beats a well-run deal with no executive connection. If you have a six or seven-figure deal, and you’re not talking to the C-Level, you’re going to get blindsided by the competitor that is.

10) There is nothing more important to cover at the end of the call than selling next steps. Much better to skip agenda items and align on next steps than to finish the agenda and take next steps “offline.”

Everyone wants faster deals. Few build the structure to support them.

Speed doesn’t come from more demos — it comes from fewer surprises.
Predictability is built upstream: clean data, defined exit criteria, and cross-functional SLAs with marketing and product.

If you want to accelerate late-stage velocity, start with early-stage discipline.

Speed isn’t about urgency.
It’s about clarity.
