But the truth is, the reason I’m able to maintain my work ethic, ambition, and drive is because of gratitude.

It’s the foundation everything else stands on.

One moment that shaped this for me was when I was 13.

We were living in a rented home in a school district that had lost its accreditation.

Some nights we didn’t have electricity, but I still stared toward where my Harvard poster hung on the wall.

Instead of asking “why is this happening to me?”, I learned to ask:

“What can I do with what I do have?”

And I was grateful for what I did have:

→ A library card that lets me check out books

→ Teachers who believed in me and stayed after school to help me

→ Strangers who donated money so I could compete in academic competitions

That gratitude fueled the work.

It pushed me to study harder, apply to over 200 scholarships, and eventually earn over $1 million in funding to attend Yale and Harvard.

Years later, gratitude shaped my life again.

In 2017, my family received a $21,000 medical bill we couldn’t afford.

It would have been easy to panic or feel defeated, but I returned to that same question:

“What can I do with what I do have?”

And again, I found things to be grateful for:

1/ Weekends I could use to figure out a solution

2/ Access to the internet

3/ Experience with writing resumes

I used those three assets to start a weekend business helping people with their resumes and job interviews.

What began as a small way to clear the debt eventually grew into a multi-million dollar career coaching business.

Gratitude didn’t make my challenges easier.

But it made my foundation stronger.

Because when you’re grateful, obstacles don’t feel as heavy. They feel like opportunities to prove who you can become.

And that mindset has changed my entire life.

While it’s Thanksgiving weekend, you don’t need a holiday to practice gratitude. You can choose it every day.

Growing up, Thanksgiving was different in my house.

We didn't have money for fancy food.

We didn't have a big table to sit at.

We didn't even have enough chairs.

But we had each other.

My family sat on the floor and shared whatever food we could afford.

And for one day, everyone was home.

My grandparents didn't have to leave for work at 7 AM.

My uncles and aunts didn't work their double shifts.

My cousins and I were out of school.

For 24 hours, we were just together.

Those moments taught me that

Having enough isn't about having everything.

It's about appreciating what you have.

My family immigrated to the U.S. with nothing.

They worked jobs others wouldn't take.

They built a life, one day at a time.

They showed me that even when you have little, you can still give thanks.

Today, life looks different for me.

But Thanksgiving still brings me back to those simple moments on the floor.

To be grateful for what I have, not what I still feel I lack.

This Thanksgiving, I'm grateful for:

1/ The family that showed me that perseverance overcomes poverty

2/ The mentors who helped me when I had nothing to offer in return

3/ The clients who trust me to help them transform their lives

4/ The opportunity to give back and create opportunities for others

I hope wherever you are, you can find something to be grateful for as well.

In 2019, I gave up my California apartment to live in a shared apartment in Bali.

I had just left my full-time job to go all-in on my career coaching business.

The problem?

In California, I had:
→ Too many distractions
→ Too much overhead
→ Too much comfort

So I did something that seemed crazy at the time:

↳ Left my comfortable California apartment
↳ Moved to Bali, where I knew no one
↳ Split an apartment with another entrepreneur
↳ Cut my living costs by 50%

No social life.
No fancy dinners.
No weekend plans.

Just work.

The result?

Scaled from $250K to $1 million within a year.

All that changed was that I cut out distractions.

Success isn't about having the perfect environment.
It's about removing everything that doesn't serve your goal.

Tomorrow begins the holiday season for many of us.

Each year around this time, I remind myself of two truths:

Someone I know is preparing for their first holiday without a husband, wife, father, mother, son, or daughter.

And someone else is celebrating what they know will be their last.

I still remember both of those feelings, celebrating my final holiday with my aunt, and the next one without her.
So as everyone rushes home this week, I remind myself to be kind.

That person who cuts me off in traffic?
They might be racing to see someone for the last time.

That person holding up the security line?
They might be facing their first holiday alone.

Whenever I start to get impatient, I tell myself:
"Davis, if someone seems short, distracted, or in a hurry today, assume the best. They might be carrying more than you know."

Here's what I try to do:
1/ Give a smile
2/ Give patience
3/ Give kindness

And if I can't give any of that…

Just don't give anyone a hard time.

Your GPS doesn't quit on you when you miss a turn.
It recalculates.

No judgment. No guilt trips. Just a new route to your destination.
Life works the same way.

You'll make wrong turns:
• Take a project/job/work that isn't the right fit
• Invest time in relationships that fall apart
• Start a business that doesn't work out
• Chase goals that you shouldn’t have

But here's what I've learned building multiple businesses from scratch:
Your destination doesn't disappear because you took a detour.
The route just changes.

When I started My Consulting Offer, it was supposed to be a quick weekend project to pay off a $21K medical debt.

I thought this was a distraction from my day job and  I "missed the turn" toward a traditional career path.

But that detour led me to build a multi-million-dollar career coaching business.

The best “GPS rerouting” moments in my life looked like failures at first:
→ Not getting the college scholarship I wanted pushed me to apply to 200 more
→ Leaving a stable job forced me to build my own income
→ Every failed relationship led me to my fiancée

So if you feel lost right now, remember:

And sometimes the recalculated route takes you somewhere better than you originally planned.

I see this mistake all the time:

When their ideal clients are scrolling IG.

Business owners mastering Instagram Reels...
When their buyers are reading industry newsletters.

The best marketing channel isn't the one everyone says you "should" use.

It's the intersection of three things:

1/ Where your ideal clients actually are
↳ Not where you wish they were.

2/ Where you can consistently show up
↳ Consistency beats perfection every time.

3/ Where you have a natural strength
↳ Play to your strengths, not against them.

You could be the best copywriter at a newspaper.

But if you're trying to reach Gen Z?

Good luck.

The marketing channel doesn't work if your target audience isn't on it.

Market to where your audience is already waiting.

The people you surround yourself with determine what you believe is possible.

When I was in high school, I wanted to go to Harvard.

But I didn't know a single person in my community who had gone there.

Then I got accepted into Georgia's Governor's Honors Program, a free summer program (otherwise, my family couldn't afford it).

For that summer, I was surrounded by 700 students from across the state.

And something changed.

For them, going to college wasn't a dream, it was normal.

Harvard, Yale, Princeton? Those weren't far-off wishes. They were real places they expected to go.

Spending time with them, their "normal" became my new normal.

What I thought was unbelievable became realistic. 

What they believed was possible became what I believed was possible.

That summer taught me what surrounding yourself with the right people can do for you.

Years later, I saw the same thing happen again when I became an entrepreneur. 

- When I wanted to build a $100K business, I found people already making $100K.
- When I aimed for $1M, I hung out with people hitting $1M.
- When I set my sights on $10M, I found those already there.

The people you spend time with either push you towards your goals or hold you back.

The good news is that you can easily upgrade your circle starting today.

These are my favorite 3 ways:

1/ Join groups where being great is normal
↳ When everyone around you is doing amazing things, you start doing amazing things too.

2/ Ask good questions and really listen
↳ People remember those who made them feel heard, not those who talked the most.

3/ Keep in touch with people regularly
↳ Strong relationships are built over time, not in one meeting.

I've seen this repeatedly with the coaches in Purple Circle.

Your network isn't just your net worth.

It's your thinking. Your standards. Your opportunities. Your energy.

And ultimately, your future.

In high school, I went to one of the worst school districts in America.

But I did something that felt crazy at the time.

I cold emailed students at Harvard and Yale to ask if they’d review my college essays.

Here’s the truth about growing a business:

The problems never go away. You just get better at solving them.

When I started my career coaching business as a weekend side hustle, my biggest problem was finding my first client.

I kept wondering, “Will anyone actually pay me for this?”

Fast forward to $250K in the first year.

New problem: “How do I hire my first coach without losing quality?”

Then we grew to multiple coaches. 

New problem: “How do I build systems so the business runs without me?”

Then came a leadership team 

New problem: “How do I keep everyone motivated?”

What I’ve learned is that every stage brings its own set of challenges:

→ At $0, you worry about getting clients.

→ At $100K, you worry about consistent revenue.

→ At $1M, you worry about systems that scale.

→ At $10M, you worry about culture and impact.

The problems never stop.

But remember, every new problem is proof you’ve already solved the last one.

Tough days are part of being a business owner.

In the early days of my business, I was working from Bali and had one of those tough days.

The kind where everything goes wrong at the worst possible time.

I got hit with Bali belly - serious food poisoning - while staring at a fully booked sales calendar. 

My business was new, and I had back-to-back sales calls, 15-minute buffers between calls, and a body that wanted to quit.

I had two options:
1/ Cancel all my sales calls 

2/ Or find a way through.

Most people would have understood if I rescheduled the meetings, but with a mom and little brother to support, I chose to find a way through.

I would take a sales call, run to the bathroom, come back, repeat.

As I was taking the calls, it wasn’t glamorous or comfortable, but I had a purpose to continue.

I had Bali belly for the week, and that week taught me something important:

You can’t avoid tough days, but you can have a reason to keep going.

I can’t stop thinking about this.
