When you come from nothing, you take nothing personally.

I learned this early.
I grew up in a neighborhood where 1 in 4 families lived below the poverty line.

I wore duct-taped shoes to school.

I watched my grandmother get robbed at gunpoint and show up to open her shop the next morning just to pay the bills.

I applied to over 200 college scholarships and got rejected by most.

Those experiences didn't make me bitter.
They made me pay attention to the struggles of others.

I learned to:
1/ Be quick to listen. Slow to judge.

3/ Be kind.

That last one matters most.

Because you never know whose life you might change with one act of kindness.

Advice for career coaches:
Your response is your reputation.

It's easy to fight back when you've been hurt or disrespected by a vendor, team member, or even a client.
But all it does is drag you down to the level of the offender.

I learned this the hard way with one of my first clients when I started my career coaching business.

I worked with them for months to help them land a job at a top consulting firm.

We prepped their resume. Wrote their cover letter. Practiced mock interviews.

They got the job offer.
They sent me a glowing testimonial.

Then when the final invoice came due?

They told me they could have done it without me.
Asked me not to remove their testimonial.
Told me they wouldn’t pay.
And ghosted me.

I wanted to fire back publicly.
But I didn't.

Because I realized my response would define me more than their actions ever could.

Here's what that experience taught me:

1/ Not every battle is worth fighting.
↳ I could've spent weeks going back and forth. Instead, I moved on and got more clients job offers.

2/ Bitterness is a tax on your time.
↳ Every minute spent replaying what happened is a minute stolen from building something better.

3/ Walking away isn't weakness. It's discipline.
↳ Staying calm when you've been wronged takes more strength than firing back.

4/ Your reputation is built over years, not one bad review.
↳ One person's opinion doesn't erase the results you've created.

5/ Not everyone will value what you give them.
↳ That says everything about them and nothing about your worth.

That career coaching business?
It became a multi-million dollar company serving thousands of clients per year.

So my advice to career coaches:
Stay calm, even when it's hard.
Especially when it's easier not to.
That's when it matters most.

My grandmother, a Vietnamese refugee, poured our family's savings into opening one of Atlanta's first Vietnamese nail salons more than 30 years ago.

'Big dreams don't take days off,' she'd tell me, and barely a day off did she take.

She worked 6.5 days a week:

- Opening at 7 AM
- Closing at 9 PM
- Only taking Sunday evenings off for family dinner

Even when:

- She was robbed at gunpoint
- Criminals broke in at night

↳ Each setback shows you what doesn't work so you can find what does.

↳ The person who's never failed has never been tested.

The biggest risk isn't failing.

It's staying still.

Success lives on the other side of the risks you're too scared to take.

1/ What can I still control?
2/ What needs to change for this to work?

Here's what separates coaches who grow from coaches who quit:

→ When others complain about the algorithm, you keep posting.
→ When others blame the market, you focus on what you can control.

→ When others get upset about refunds, you focus on helping the right people.

Real growth doesn't happen when things are easy.

Growth happens when things are hard, and you show up anyway.

The business owners who build big, profitable businesses aren't the ones who never have bad days.

They're the ones who have bad days and choose to keep going.

The best investment I ever made wasn't in stocks.
It wasn't in real estate.
It was in myself.

Here's what I've learned building multiple 7- and 8-figure businesses:

Skills compound faster than money.
💰 Money can be taxed.
💰 Money can be stolen.
💰 Money can disappear overnight.

But skills?
No one can take them from you.

When I was growing up, my family lost everything multiple times. 

My grandma’s nail salon was robbed, broken into, and even once burnt down.

But each time, my grandma went back to work the next day.

Why?

Because they could take her money. 

They could damage her property.
But they couldn't take her skills.

I learned from watching my grandma that investing in myself gave me an asset that couldn’t be taken away.

Investing in yourself beats every other investment because -

1/ Skills appreciate over time.
↳ The more you use them, the more valuable they become.

2/ No one can take them from you.
↳ You can lose a job/business, but your skills remain.

3/ They can't be taxed.
↳ The government can tax your income, but it can't tax your ability to create more.

4/ They travel with you.
↳ Move cities. Change industries. Start over. Your skills come with you.

The most successful people I know invest more in learning than in anything else.
They read books. They hire coaches. They join masterminds.
Not because they have extra money.
Because they know skills are the one asset that multiplies everything else and cannot be taken away.

Biggest time waster for coaches…
Getting on sales calls with people who will never buy.

Every wasted call costs you more than time, it drains your energy, delays progress, and keeps you from serving the clients who actually need you.

Before anyone gets on my calendar, make sure they have a BID:

𝗕  →  𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁 - Can they afford what you offer? 

𝗜 →  𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 - Are they the type of person you actually want to work with? 

𝗗 → 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲 - Are they actively looking for a solution?

Most coaches resist pre-qualifying because they're afraid of turning people away.

But here's what I've learned building multiple businesses coaching businesses:

The fastest path to more revenue isn't more calls, it's better calls.

When you BID before you book, you spend your time with people who are ready, willing, and aligned.

Your calendar will thank you.
Your energy will thank you.
Your bank account will thank you.

The fastest way to grow isn't working harder.
It's asking for help.

Here's the irony I see with coaches all the time:

We ask our clients to trust us with their careers, their businesses, their futures.

But when it comes to our own growth?

We try to figure it out alone.

I used to do the same thing.

Growing up, I thought asking for help meant I wasn't smart enough.

That I should be able to figure it out on my own.

Then I applied to Harvard.

I was a kid from the worst school district in America with no college counselors, no SAT prep, and no one in my family who had ever been to college.

I cold-emailed Harvard students asking them to review my essays.

Complete strangers.

They had no reason to help me.

But they did.

Their feedback changed everything.

With their help I got into Harvard.

That single decision to ask for help changed the trajectory of my life.

Here's what I've learned since:

1/ If you don't ask, the answer is already no.
↳ The worst thing someone can say is no. You're already there.

2/ The fastest path forward isn't more effort - it’s a better path.
↳ Find someone who's already where you want to be and borrow their judgment.

3/ Asking for help isn't weakness. It's a shortcut.
↳ Why spend years figuring out what someone can teach you in hours?

4/ The people at the top are usually the most willing to help.
↳ Those who've made it remember what it took to get there.

5/ Your ego is the most expensive thing you own.
↳ Every month you delay asking costs you time, money, and momentum.

As coaches, we tell our clients to invest in themselves.

To trust the process.

To ask for support.

We need to do the same.

The breakthrough you're looking for might be one conversation away.

So ask yourself, who do you need to ask for help today?

The people around you will either lift your ceiling or lower it.

I learned this lesson at age 16.

I was attending a school district labeled the "worst in the U.S."

Getting a 1600 out of 2400 on the SAT seemed impressive in my community.

Going to any college was celebrated.

Then I got accepted into Georgia's Governor's Honors Program.

Suddenly, I was surrounded by students who saw 2200+ SAT scores as normal.

They didn't dream about the Ivy League - they planned for it.

What seemed impossible in my neighborhood was just the standard at the summer program I was at.

Being around those other students reset what I thought was possible.

I stopped comparing myself to my local peers and started competing nationally.

I raised my SAT score by 400 points.

I applied to over 200 scholarships.

I got accepted to Harvard and Yale.

Here's what I learned:

1/ Your environment sets your expectations.
↳ What's "exceptional" in one room is "below average" in another.

2/ Belief comes from what you see is possible.
↳ You have to see it before you can become it.

3/ Raise your standards by changing who you spend time with.
↳ Get close to people living the life you want.

4/ Find better rooms.
↳ If you're the smartest person in every room, find new rooms.

5/ Standards are contagious.
↳ Being around high performers will lift your own performance.

The people you keep around you aren't just company.

They're a mirror reflecting what's possible for your life.

Most coaches think going viral is the answer.
It is not.

A coach asked me on a podcast: “𝘐𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴?”

Here’s my take:

Viral posts feel exciting. But they aren’t the answer.

I’d rather have consistent leads than inconsistent viral moments.

When you go viral, you might get 50 people booking calls in a week…

But what happens the rest of the year?

Early in my coaching career, I had weeks where posts brought in 50+ calls.

Then weeks with very few. That’s not a business you can build around.

The real key isn’t virality.

It’s building systems that bring in the right leads, week after week.

Because consistency, not luck, is what grows a coaching business.
