Hope is the author of 'SoldOut' (2024), a novel that seeks to empower African women through sharing their experiences. 

She is a linguist and a Social Care Worker (sosionomi)

Hope is passionate about women empowerment and gender equality. 

Hope's interest and expertise  are literature, women empowerment, gender, integration, diversity, inclusion and equality.

At her leisure time, she volunteers for ILCAN ry,  an organisation she co-founded to promote Igbo language and culture in the diaspora.

A recent research finding shows that immigrants contribute to the Finnish economy more than they receive in benefits. 

As a Specialist working with immigrant background jobseekers, I am yet to see a person who is happily unemployed. 

I have meet clients who work long hours alongside their studies so that they won't rely on social benefits. 

While discussing sensitive topic such as this, it is important to have a balanced view. Public discourse on topical issues should be based on research not sentiments. 

It's a good thing that Helsinki Times shared the findings of the report from researchers. 

Mainstream discourse on important topics should promote equality for the good of every member of the society.

"Do your children speak your language? If they don't, why?" - Chimamanda Adichie 

The idea of speaking one's mother tongue might seem common to a person whose children learn their mother tongue naturally without extra effort. 

For some African parents, the question is food for thought, one that stings and brings them to reality. 

During the colonial era, African indigenous languages were considered inferior. Those who embraced colonialists' language were the ones who got opportunities. They were regarded as the elites while those who held on to their native language and culture were mostly left behind. 

The attitude of preferring foreign languages to one's own language dates back to colonial era and it has gone on for generations. 

Today, some parents take pride in the fact that their children can not speak their native language. 

During my recent trip to Nigeria, people were shocked that my children speak Igbo fluently and that Igbo is our primary language of communication. 
 Many did not believe the children were visiting Nigeria for the first time in their lives. 😊

From my experience, teaching your native language to your children is the best gift you can give them.

 For children born in the diaspora, knowing their mother language serves not only as a means of communicating with relatives. It also support their identity formation and helps them understand their roots.

In Finland, school children have an opportunity to learn their mother language after school, but not all parents are aware of this opportunity. 

When children speak their mother tongue, they gain unhindered access to their roots and they have a high self-esteem.

Gender equality requires concrete action! 

I recently heard about a story of a Nigerian woman who defied all odds to achieve her dream of becoming a PhD holder.

She had five children who happened to be  girls. The husband abandoned her and the children and went after other women with the hope of getting a male child. 🤔

This woman suffered a setback but she was determined on moving forward. 

She graduated as a midwife a few years later and opened a clinic in her city. The estranged husband came and locked up the building because the land belonged to him. 

Undeterred and with a determination to succeed, she bought a land and built her own clinic. She trained her daughters up to university level and they are all doing great. The woman went ahead to study more upto PhD. 👏🏾

While this woman's story is not an isolated case, her experience is a reminder that a lot of work still needs to be done in creating a fair and just society where both men and women have an equal opportunity to thrive.
