Your nervous system does not care that your stress is "for a good reason".

I was talking with a counselor friend of mine who works with a lot of high performers.

She said something that hit me hard: Your body doesn't know the difference between "I'm in danger" and "I'm scaling something exciting".

To your nervous system, stress is stress.

Sara Blakely's dad used to ask his kids at dinner:

"What did you fail at this week?"

If they had nothing to share, he'd be disappointed.

He wasn't celebrating failure. 
He was teaching them to release the weight of fearing it.

Blakely went on to build Spanx into a billion-dollar company.

She credits that dinner table question as one of the reasons why.

"Failure is not the outcome," she says. "Failure is not trying."

I think about this as we head into a new year.

We're all carrying weight we don't need to carry.

→ Fear of looking foolish

→ Fear of trying something and having it not work 
→ Habits that made sense once but don't anymore 
→ Stories about ourselves that stopped being true years ago

The people who fly aren't the ones who never failed.

They're the ones who stopped letting the fear of failure hold them down.

I spent 30 years in sales.

And for too many of those years, I carried weight I didn't need.

The fear of being "too salesy." 
The worry about what people would think. 
The quiet voice that said I wasn't enough for the rooms I was in.

Looking back, I wonder what would have been different if I'd put that down sooner.

So here's my question for you as you think about this year:

What weight are you ready to release?

Not what do you need to add. 
Not what do you need to do more of.

What do you need to put down?

That might be the thing that lets you fly.

If you are in a hard spot right now, I feel you.

Two night ago. I told Dave, I Quit.

Out loud. “I’m done with this.”

Five hours deep.
AI giving me wrong answers.
Bug after bug after bug.
Teaching myself yet another tech tool
I didn’t know I’d need.

But it wasn’t just that night.
It was the pattern.

Two years of building this business.
Mistakes everywhere.
Money wasted here.
Wrong tech there.
Wrong hire there.

Learning from each one.
But nothing FINISHING.

My to-do list as tall as me.

And nothing crossing the line.

I quit. A concept that doesn’t usually occur to me, but felt really real.

Dave said tomorrow would be different.

I wasn’t convinced.

But I got up. 
Sauna. Cold plunge.
(I needed those endorphins.)

Grabbed my “You Can Do Hard Things” shirt.
Thought: yeah. I need this today.

Set a goal: one more hour.

Nine hours later?
I finalized an entire working app.

Me.

55 years old.

Sold millions in enterprise software.
Could explain it.
Could demo it.
Could close it.

Couldn’t build any of it.
Still can’t figure out half the features
on my iPhone.

And I just built an entire app.

Getting stronger from setbacks.

The irony isn’t lost on me

Those nine hours?
I wasn’t smiling like this photo.

Frustration.
Deep focus.
Impatience.
Stubborn commitment.

At one point I talked to myself:
“Can you recover faster from this?
How fast can you bounce back?”

Not confident.
Doubting myself.
But also hoping I could.

Here’s why I’m sharing this:

It’s early January.
Everyone’s talking big goals.
Fresh starts.
New year energy.

I just set some big goals myself.
So no one’s more surprised than me
that I had an “I quit” moment.
A real one.

But here’s what I learned:

For anyone feeling the pressure right now:

That deal you’re about to walk away from.

That prospect you’re not calling back
because you’ve tried 5 times.

That goal you’re giving up on
because you stumbled.

The distance between “I quit”
and “I did it”?

✅ Sometimes it’s 24 hours.

✅ Sometimes it’s nine more hours of work.

✅ Sometimes it’s showing up one more time when you don’t think you can.

✅ Sometimes it’s enduring the pain of a cold plunge to get to the endorphins that help you push through.

✅ Sometimes it’s a silly t-shirt or a mantra that reminds you, you got this.

✅ Sometimes it’s that person who believes in you when you don’t.

✅ Sometimes it’s all of the above.

If you’re in the hard right now,
keep going.

The best moments are gained
by moving through it.

The pressure is real.
So is the pain. 

But you are more wildly capable than you know.

You’ve got this.

Hard things look good on you.

The loneliest part of high performance isn't failure. It's struggling in silence.

Nobody talks about this.

You're supposed to have it figured out by now.
You've been doing this for years.
You know what to do.

But knowing and doing are different things.

And when the gap between them grows, most of us go quiet. We don't tell anyone we're stuck. We don't admit we're spinning. We just keep soldiering through, hoping it clicks.

I've felt this way myself at times. 
I see it in sellers and leaders all the time.

But silence doesn't solve it. Connection does.

Because performance is social. It always has been.

And the research backs it up:

65% more likely to hit a goal when you tell someone.
95% when you add regular check-ins.

Not accountability as in judgment. Accountability as in someone expecting to hear from you. Someone who has standards, not just encouragement.
Someone who makes you not want to send the text saying you didn't do it.

That's different than a cheerleader.
That's a partner.

Elite performers aren't lone wolves.
They have people.

And when you step into the social connection?
It becomes your superpower.

The right people don't just support you. They multiply you.

Seeking help isn't a sign you're struggling. It's a sign you're serious about where you're going.

Turns out my “guilty pleasure” is actually a stress reduction tool.

I love reading. Especially brain candy fantasy fiction. Long book series by Sarah Maas. Harry Potter with my kids when they were little. Anything that doesn’t look like real life.

And I’ve felt guilty about it. 

“Shouldn’t I be reading that business book? That parenting book? Something more productive?”

Then I found the research:

Fiction, specifically (the kind that fully engages your imagination) slows your heart rate, eases muscle tension, shifts you from fight-or-flight to rest.

A Truth About Sales Success

Sales is hard. Avoiding sales activities is also hard.

Here’s what elite sellers understand (and have systems, routines and rituals to make it easier):

Making cold calls is hard 💎

So we run:
→ 80 minutes of deep, high-quality work
→ 10 minutes deliberately reserved for transition

Not jumping straight into the next Zoom.

But:

→ Taking a few deep breaths

Sitting longer than 20 minutes

That’s not a guess.

And yet.

We keep telling ourselves to push harder.

Friday I’m running on fumes. Saturday I crash.

She wasn’t complaining. 
She was just stating facts. 
Like that’s how it has to be.

It doesn’t.

Here’s what I’ve learned after 32 years in sales:

It’s not a discipline problem.
It’s an identity problem.

“I’m someone who soldiers up all week and crashes on weekends.”

That’s an identity.

“I’m someone who manages energy like an athlete.”

That’s a different identity.

Same you. 
Different operating system.

The sellers who figure this out in 2026 won’t just hit their number.

They’ll sell more.
They’ll actually be present at dinner.
They’ll wake up Saturday without dreading Monday.

They’ll stop borrowing from their life to pay for their quota.

That identity shift is learnable.

And it’s easier when you’re not doing it alone.

That’s why we do this in a small cohort of experienced sellers who get it.  Who are done white-knuckling their way through every week.

It's mid-January. "Go time" is everywhere.

But can we be honest for a second?

Q4 took everything. 
Then the holidays asked for more. 
Family, travel, obligations. 
Even the good stuff takes energy.

And now you're supposed to come out swinging like you've been resting for weeks?

If you're sitting here knowing it's go time but not feeling the go... you're not behind.  You're not lazy.  You're not losing your edge. You're human.

2026 belongs to the sellers who figure out how to start without waiting to feel ready.

That's not motivation. That's a skill.

Everyone said I'd have to choose.

My babies or my quota.
Be present or be successful.
Be a good mom or a top performer.

I refused.

But refusing doesn't make the problem go away.

Pregnant, staring down a quota in a "zero opportunity" territory, with 9 months to figure it out.

Three consecutive years. Each time with LESS than 12 months to hit quota and MORE responsibility at home:
→ 9 months to hit quota while pregnant
→ 11 months to hit quota with a newborn (and pregnant again)
→ 8.5 months to hit quota with a toddler and newborn

Three years where I had no room for error.
No room for busywork.
No room for pretending activity was progress.

The constraint forced a question I'd never asked before:

"𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗼𝘁𝗮 𝗼𝗻 𝟯𝟬 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸... 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁?"

That question changed everything.

My brain stopped defending the old way and started finding the breakthrough.

I combined this with 10x thinking.

Not "how do I work a little smarter?"

But "what if I only had 30 hours a week and HAD to hit 100% of quota?"

This sequence unlocks moves you'd never consider otherwise.

(I even ran a 19-day experiment in August testing this: working 20% of the time to get 100% of the results. What I discovered changed how I approach everything.)

Here's what survived when everything else got cut:

Does this move a winnable deal forward?
↳ If no, I didn't do it.

Focus on bigger, winnable deals only.
↳ Everything else was a distraction dressed as productivity.

Make buying easy.
↳ Business cases, clarity, internal alignment.

Protect energy ruthlessly.
↳ No busywork. No ego projects. No noise.

The results:

→ Hit 100% of quota working 20-30 hours most weeks
→ Became #1 rep in the world
→ Did this on one of the highest growth quotas in the company
→ Always had time for my kids and didn't miss the moments that matter

If we're honest, most of us have been there.

Here's what the pro knows: 

Starting is the hardest part.

Once you're in motion, momentum takes over. Your brain wants to finish what it started.

"Just 5 minutes" is easy to say yes to.

And by the time those 5 minutes are up? 
You're already rolling.

Now add the multiplier:
One accountability partner.

Research shows you're 65% more likely to hit a goal when you commit to someone else. Add regular check-ins? 95%.

Not a pep talk. 
Just: "I'm starting. You?"

I've been practicing this almost daily for 14 months. Re-wiring my own resistance pathways. Because I know it's one of my must-dos to create the success I want.

There are no magic pills. But this is as close to a silver bullet for taking action as I've found. (Research backs it up 😎)

"I can't keep working this way."

It's showing up everywhere. 

Boardrooms, classrooms, kitchen tables. 

People who usually thrive under pressure are feeling it.

If you're in sales, you know this weight.

And the stakes reset every quarter.

In the past two weeks, I've heard the same thing from seller after seller:

"I'm the worst procrastinator you've ever met."

"I'll close a big deal and then realize I forgot to send pricing on a small one."

"If a task gets past its due date, I just keep pushing it to the back burner."

"I procrastinate tasks I'm not sure how to accomplish. The anxiety keeps me from taking action."

These aren't junior reps.

These are experienced sellers.
8 to 30 years in the game.
President's Club winners.
Hitting their numbers.

And they're telling me the same thing:
Something isn't working the way it used to.

Here's what I'm seeing:
- The to-do list is as tall as they are.
- Nothing is crossing the finish line.
- The exciting deals get all the energy.  Everything else falls through the cracks.

One seller lost a deal last week because he didn't follow up fast enough. 

The prospect said: "I needed this last Thursday. I went with your competitor."

This isn't a discipline problem.
It's not laziness.
It's not a character flaw.

It's the result of sustained pressure without enough systems for recovery.🫙

The seller traits that worked five years ago aren't the traits we need now.

Willpower isn't enough.
Grinding harder isn't the answer.

What's needed is different:💥
→ Systems that create action without requiring motivation
→ Energy management, not just time management
→ Recovery built into the rhythm, not saved for weekends

The sellers who figure this out in 2026 won't just hit their number.
✅ They'll sell more.
✅ They'll have energy left for their nights and weekends.
✅ They'll have a great year at work and at home.

Here's an uncomfortable truth. Sellers are silently suffering right now.

Not because they're weak.

Because it's not safe to say it out loud.

For years, the answer has been the same: gird up, soldier on, push through. That's just sales, right? 

But without real support, those things make it worse. 

And the numbers reveal what everyone's been looking the other way on:
→ 70%+ report overwhelm
→ Only 28% hit quota last year (lowest in six years)
→ 87% struggling with attainment 

Someone needs to say it.
This isn't ok. 
And there is a better way.

Good news: The World Economic Forum just made this a priority at Davos. They even built a "Brain House" dedicated to it. McKinsey is calling it "brain capital."

Their message: Tech isn't the differentiator anymore. Human capability is. 

But it will take years to trickle down to your company.

Don't wait.

Start studying safety.

In sales, everybody talks about trust.

Build trust. Be trustworthy. 
Trust-based selling.
It's important.

But it's not enough or the unlock in today's environment.

But here's what I've learned after 30+ years and $250M in closed deals:

Trust is not safety.

Trust is: 
"I believe you. I believe your product works."

Safety is:
"I think I'll be okay if I do this."

Your buyer can trust you completely and still not move forward.

Because they don't feel safe.

They're asking themselves:
→ Will this make me look stupid? 
→ Will this help or hurt my career? 
→ What happens if this goes wrong?

That hesitation isn't about you. 
It's about them.

Decisions happen at the intersection of trust AND safety. Not one or the other.

So the questions shifts.

Instead of: "How do I build more trust?" 
It becomes: How do I create more safety?

Try: "What would make this feel safe for you to move forward?"

It's a pattern interrupt. 
And it focuses on real needs.

Many times, it's the unlock even for the buyer. The question can help surface risks they have not yet considered.

When you invite a dialogue around safety, two things happen:

Many buyers feel a sense of relief...Someone's looking out for their risks and interests. And you learn what's holding back momentum.

Focusing on creating safety for your buyers will be a game-changing move for 2026. Especially in today's brain economy.
