About me: 

I’m Harrison.  

I've spent the last 7+ years in marketing, with a focus on demand generation for both early and late-stage startups, including work at a $15B fintech unicorn. 

I now run Motif, a solo venture that manages newsletters for creators with over 60 million followers, Sunday Times bestselling authors, Solopreneurs with a combined LinkedIn audience of over 500K and 7-8 figure B2B companies.

Bad email marketing:

Ignore your list for months, send 7 desperate emails in launch week, wonder why conversions are low.

Good email marketing:

Spend the month before launch demonstrating expertise through stories. By the time you open doors, people already know what you're about and whether it's for them.

That’s exactly what I did for Laura Humphreys ahead of her next cohort launch.

Spent the month of September writing and sending 5 story/insight focussed emails per week, the same strategy you might have seen used by founders like Jacob Pegs, Matt Barker, JK Molina, and Taki Moore. 

Our process was simple:

1 hour call + a strategy form to learn Laura's story, her mindset and unique experiences. 

Laura then sent me docs on her positioning, client stories, common objections, the transformation her programme creates, etc. 

I then took all of her past content and turned it into deep avatar research, so I could write to one person that exactly matched her ideal client avatar. 

She then went on holiday while I wrote and scheduled everything. 

And while she was away, she'd send me WhatsApp voice notes whenever something interesting happened - and I'd turn those into emails as well. 

Total time commitment from Laura across the entire month: maybe 3 hours tops.

If you're launching something soon and your email strategy is "we'll send some emails during launch week," you need to recognise that the work has to start well before the cart opens.

If you take months before the launch to invest in building trust, proving your personability, and shifting beliefs on what’s possible (and why your product can help achieve this) then you’ll have a warm, pre-sold list that’s primed for your offer.

2 months ago, I started writing 3 emails a week for a post-exit agency founder.


The job was kinda simple.
Get more people into his paid community.

So first up - we built the automation stack:

- Welcome flow
- Post-welcome sales flow
- Post-purchase
- Why didn’t you buy?
- Re-engagement

Then we started emailing his list of ~7,000 three times a week.
He barely touched a word. Just said, “this is exactly how I’d say it.”

The emails were working.
People were opening, replying, clicking.

But conversions were falling a little flatter than we hoped.

So we zoomed out. Looked at the data we’d been collecting through the automation stack.

And realised the issue was likely positioning and buying intent.

The audience didn’t want a done-with-you offer.
They wanted someone to do it for them.

So the founder partnered with another agency.
Together, they built a done-for-you service.
High-ticket, high-trust, built on serious credibility.

Then I wrote and sent four emails across 2 weeks with the CTA to reply for more details.

And….

…46 qualified replies.
From an audience we thought wasn’t converting.
Each lead worth ~£3K/mo.

Building a list is relatively easy.
Getting the offer(s) positioned right is where most people miss the mark.

A newsletter can do a lot for your business.


But only if you treat it like part of the business.

I’ve spoken to founders who get excited about launching one...
Then two months in, it’s gone quiet.
One skipped week turns into two.
Then four.
And the list goes cold.

At that point, you can’t just pick up where you left off.

You have to re-engage.
Win back attention.
And rebuild the consistency from scratch.

So if someone’s spread too thin - juggling too many offers, or too many priorities, I usually recommend not starting just yet.

It’s not a small lift.
If anything, it’s another product in your ecosystem.

One that needs time.
Attention.
And ideally, someone to own it fully.

Because when it’s done right, the results compound quickly.
But if it turns into just another thing on your plate…
It can hurt more than help.
