My practice is focused on personal injury litigation and family law.  As a rule, our firm does extensive screening before accepting a personal injury or family law case.  We seek to limit the number of active clients that we are representing at any given time in effort to streamline the litigation process.  As such, our clients enjoy being able to have regular and frequent access to their attorney and exceptional service.

In 2007, I started my law firm in Greenville, NC.

In 2019, I had a breakthrough.

5 years ago, I decided to go all-in on real estate investing with nothing more than the advice of a friend.

I was putting in endless hours as a partner in my law firm.

I was (and still am) so fortunate to have so much work, but I knew working 90-hour weeks wasn’t sustainable long-term.

I knew I wanted a future full of options.

• Options for my career.
• Options for my kids’ future.
• Options for more time with my family.

The only problem?

Starting as a real estate investor from scratch isn’t exactly easy.

So I started:

• Educating myself.
• Building my network.
• Exposing myself as a passive investor. 

I hit what felt like a few thousand speed bumps, but now I own more than a dozen properties and have experienced a ton of the benefits of real estate first-hand.

Am I where I want to be?

Not yet.

Am I on the right path?

Absolutely.

Here’s what I’ve learned about stress from 17 years in one world’s most taxing jobs:

I’m an attorney, which means someone is always angry with me.

I’ve been cursed at… threatened… insulted. 

If you can imagine it, it’s happened to me.

When I look at my career, I notice that pressure and success are almost perfectly correlated.

When I’m the most stressed and under the most pressure, I’ve had massive success.

When things are easy and low-stakes, the needle stays put.

Stressful situations are a catalyst for a tremendous amount of energy.

You can either channel that energy into: 

A) Crying about how unfair the world is.

Or 

B) Using it as a motivator to attack your goals.

Stress and pressure aren’t going to go anywhere. For most of us, they’re a constant. 

But if you can:

• Compartmentalize the negativity. 
• Use that energy productively.
• Focus on the good in life. 

Then you can turn stress into success.

You're going to earn it.

𝟮. 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸

Honesty is the key here.

Tell them when they're doing great.
Tell them when they could be doing better.

𝟯. 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁.

It's hard to see your kids fail.

It's tempting to want to step in and help.

But failure is a catalyst to success...

As long as it's wrapped in self-discovery.

・Anxious over huge tax bills

・Great marriage

What changed?

I realized: “Nobody is coming to save me.”

1. Message everyone you can.

Send a DM to anyone who:

-> Sends you a connection request.
-> Comments on your post.
-> Views your profile.
-> Likes your post.
-> Follows you.

I’m still working on implementing this, but the idea is that EVERYONE is a potential client.

Or, at the very least, a potential relationship — which is just as valuable. 

2. Be conversational.

You’re human.

Communicate like it!

You don’t have to talk about synergies or adding value to networks.

Say, “What’s up, man?”

That’s how you talk.

It’s OK to message that way, too.

3. The 9-word rule

Don’t slap people with 100-word paragraphs about your service or your offer.

If you send more than 9 words at a time, you’re being too wordy. 

4. Ask people what brought them to your profile.

If they’re a potential client — great.

If they’re just interested in your content, ask them what they like about your content. Then, double down on what works. 

5. Create a free resource.

-> eBooks
-> Real books
-> Video guides

Whatever it is, make sure you use a special URL to track qualified leads you get from LinkedIn.

Provide an overwhelming amount of value in your resource and give it away willingly.

5 things that destroy your path to financial freedom:

𝟭. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: 

Living beyond your means is a guarantee you’ll crash and burn.

Stop Keeping up with the Joneses. Why are they so great, anyway? 

𝟮. 𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗵, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Yes, every investment has risk.

But the only way to guarantee you’ll lose money is to let inflation erode your cash. 

𝟯. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝘁: 

Debt can crush you.

Debt can free you.

Understand the difference between using debt for liabilities and using debt for assets. 

𝟰. 𝗡𝗼 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱: 

The rule of thumb is to keep about 3-6 months of expenses in your emergency fund.

It’s alright if you lose a little to inflation here if it keeps you from losing a lot to an unexpected event. 

𝟱. 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: 

If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail. 

“Hope” is not an investment strategy.

If you don’t take action, you risk losing control over the ability to make decisions about your future.

Create a plan.
Execute it.

How I turned 56 rejections into $1,000,000…

(If you want to make a living with real estate, read this:)

During my first capital raise, I contacted 60 investors.

I got 56 REJECTIONS.

What got me through it was knowing one thing:

𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲.

Each NO is a stepping stone to a YES.

I was persistent (maybe annoying?).
I made sure I got an answer from everyone.
4 people said "yes," and I raised $1,000,000.

Here's what I found interesting: 

Many people who initially declined invested with me later.

Often, a 'no' is actually a 'not now.'

Also, that effort ratio of 60 Contacted: $1M Raised ratio is not bad.

( I could do that all day. )

𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿:

Success is a numbers game.

You deserve nothing.
You earn everything.

5 simple ways to avoid having to work until you’re 65:

𝟭. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸—𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱.

• Invest early and often.
• Diversify your portfolio.
• Copy strategies of HNW investors.

Don’t be scared of spending money…

• Joy.
• Peace.
• More money.

Obviously, right?

But are you doing it?

• Ask for a raise. 
• Start a side hustle. 
• Invest in passive income streams.
• Pursue higher-paying opportunities.

𝟰. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻.

• Do a full audit of your finances.
• Set a retirement number.
• Make a plan to hit it.

𝟱. 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆. 

Health is wealth.

The better you take care of yourself, the more energy you’ll have to execute your financial freedom plan. 

• Exercise regularly.
• Get enough sleep.
• Manage stress effectively.

I fished in a tournament with a $7,500,000 purse recently.

Didn’t get a single bite.

It was at the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament — an event I’ve fished several times in the past.

-> 1 captain.
-> 2 mates.
-> 4 days. 
-> 6 anglers.

And…

-> 0 bites.

It was a disappointment.

But as I was thinking about writing about the tournament on LinkedIn, I was scrolling through my texts. 

And here’s what I sent to my group after the event:

“𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻, 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲… 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝘂𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁-𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀, 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆.

I sat down to write about not catching a single fish.

I ended up writing about feeling like I won the whole tournament.

Perspective.

It’s a heck of a thing, isn’t it?

You don’t need a business coach to elevate to the next level.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀.

I have a lot of financial and business discussions with my 10-year-old daughter.

I talk with her as candidly as possible.

During these conversations, I have a few goals:

-> Teach her about growing her wealth.
-> Get her brain thinking about business.
-> Give her perspective on the real world.

And every time, she flips the script on me.

The other day, I was telling her about an issue I was having with a client.

The person wasn’t being responsive, and when they were, they were being difficult.

“Dad,” my daughter said. 

“That person probably just has a lot going on. I bet they’re not being difficult on purpose. They might have something happening at home you don’t know about.

“𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻.”

I just had to laugh. Because — of course — she was right. 

(Again.)

So no, you don’t need a business coach.

You just need your kids.

Turns out, they’re pretty smart.


𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀?

I know fantastic attorneys who have gone crazy from burnout.

The problem? They don’t have an exit plan.

In the legal field, it’s common to see lawyers work until they die.

But it’s not because they want to.

Almost always, it’s because they have to.

Many brilliant lawyers make terrible business people.

And it's an industry with a really rough underside that people don’t talk enough about.

Anxiety. 
Depression.
Alcoholism. 
Substance abuse. 

It’s all rampant in the legal field.

And these concerns are a huge reason why I got into real estate investing.

If practicing law ever got too stressful, I wanted to have other options. Too many people don't realize they don't have an exit plan until it's too late — and I didn't want that to be me.

 -> Consume advice without taking action.

Every day, people share their exact blueprints for financial freedom.

But how many posts do you bookmark and never go back to? 

Consuming advice gives you a hit of dopamine.

“I’ll use this in the future,” you think. “Just when I have more time.”

Your brain feels like you’ve made some progress.

But your portfolio is in the same place it’s ever been.

My challenge to you:

Next time you find a piece of investment advice that resonates with you, log off LinkedIn and implement it.

Dopamine won’t help you retire early.

Action will.

Here’s a universal truth every millionaire will tell you:

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 

You can be brilliant.
You can have great business ideas.
You can do all the analysis you want.

But none of it matters without:

• Action.
• Speed.

When I decided to invest in real estate, I bought 14 properties in 14 months.

• Buy properties with 15-20% down.
• Rehab the properties.
• Raise the rents a bit.
• Do a cash-out refi.
• Get money back.
• Repeat.

I found a system that worked, and I replicated it over and over again.

Whenever you have an idea, you have 2 options:

1) Go for it.
2) Don’t go for it.

Inaction keeps you stuck.

But money follows action.
