I’m actually suspicious of most business events “for women”. So many seems to be:



- Boss babe-style, and only for women who look a certain way

- About regurgitating the same buzzwords and cliches 

- Surface-level motivational stuff that leaves you on a high until you realise it’s entirely detached from the reality, systemic challenges, and context around it

Instead, what I appreciated the most about Sophie Jane Lee's book launch wasn’t the stunning venue, the complimentary drinks, or the fact that we got to dance and let loose at the end (although those were all huge perks).

It’s how intersectional it felt.

From the line-up of speakers/topics to how, even though it was an evening of celebrations, she acknowledged what’s currently going on in the world.

Because, lately, I’ve been ranging from “I’m so excited to share this client story or marketing-related analogy with my audience” / “I get to inspire women founders to raise their standards and market their services in a way that finally does justice to their brilliance, instead of downplaying it”...

… to “it all feels trivial and pointless” / “does my little business even matter, when I might see a mushroom cloud from my window soon?” 🫠

But after hearing her speech, I genuinely thought:

if more of the people in charge looked and sounded like the ones in that room, we probably wouldn’t be worrying about that mushroom cloud or the world feeling on fire, right now 🧡
