Headed up Payments Experience Platform group, a cross-platform, backend, web, and native mobile group of about 25 engineers. Built Uber Wallet. Created the Web Payments team, who are building all next-generation experiences for paying for Uber products, across all web surfaces. Manager for Uber Pay towards the end of my tenure.

Challenges included building and operating a payments platform processing $65B in 2019, scaling services to thousands of QPS, building an easy-enough to extend platform, having a magical UX that always works, and delivering more, and faster, while dealing with migration hell that is typical for a company in hypergrowth.

Engineering Manager, Payments Experience Platform

Making sure people can pay for their ride with Uber doesn't sound that exciting. Until you realize $2B+ is on the line every month, in 70+ countries, with more than a dozen payment methods.

Worked with a nimble, cross-platform, backend/iOS/Android engineering team, growing from 5 to 15 people. We balanced building new ways to pay that often meant $100M+ in annual revenue and keeping everything running - without losing our sanity.

Some of the things we launched this time were AMEX, Google Pay, Venmo, Brazil debit cards and iDEAL. And we somehow managed to find time to help rewrite the Driver app, do some interesting security-related work and made time to ship a few improvements initiated by people on the team - which added tens of millions to the bottom line.

These were really fun times.

Engineering Manager, Rider Payments

Rewrote the Uber app, leading the payments features rewrite both on iOS & Android. We did what many engineers would advise against: started from scratch, bet on a new language without mature tooling support (Swift 2.2 at the time) and started over with a new architecture to be shared between iOS and Android (RIB architecture). We did of this in a hustle, with less than 6 months from the first line of code to shipping globally.

We now have an app where a hundred different program teams and thousands of engineers can build quality features quickly and innovate within the app, without compromising the core experience and iOS and Android share the same code architecture, class names, business logic and platform components.

Senior Software Engineer, Payment Providers Platform

Skyscanner

Built Skyscanner TravelPro, a B2B travel product that we positioned to disrupt the way companies and people book their travel. I hired, built up & led the mobile team for this product, shipping the iOS app. We moved fast, built a polished MVP in 8 months, validated it with a few first active customers and iterated on the next version for the following 6 months. Ultimately, we did not have the right product-market fit and merged the learnings, team and product back into Skyscanner.

Principal Software Engineer

Skype

Part of the founding team for Skype Xbox One, building it from the first line of code written to shipping to millions of people on launch day. Some interesting challenges included building a navigation framework for all controllers, voice, and gesture and performance challenges in resource-constrained scenarios.

Afterwards joined the Skype Web team and built web.skype.com, a competitor to Google Hangouts at the time. Rolled out an earlier version of web calling to all 400 million Outlook.com users, implementing solutions to handle load a scalable way.

Software Engineer

Team Distinction (Acquired by Skyscanner)

Built some of the highest-rated applications on Windows Phone like Cocktail Flow, Weather Flow and AppFlow in the evenings and weekends. Later ported Cocktail Flow to Windows 8, iOS, and Android together with Distinction where it is one of the most popular drinks apps (just search for "cocktail" on the app store). These apps had over 15M downloads and above 200K DAU at their peak.

Mobile App Development (Side Projects)

J.P. Morgan

Built a market making product for the equity derivatives front office desk. This was the software that I shipped to the fewest people in my entire career (about 20 traders and marketers) but one that generated millions of dollars in daily revenue during heavy trading, facilitating money movements in the high hundreds of millions per day.

Half the internet seems to be down thanks to the us-aws-east-1 outage:

Perplexity, Amazon .com, Signal, and all of Substack are down (just 4 services I tried to use)

When aws-us-east-1 sneezes, the whole world feels it indeed...

Also: services that use Statuspage .io to report their own status to customers, that are hit by this outage, have an "all green" status page, because Statuspage itself is down (doesn't allow customers to log in to update and indicate the status!)

I didn't believe it until I saw it: but it *really* works in open offices! And you cannot even hear devs "whispering."

This is ML engineer Menoua Keshishian at Wispr Flow HQ, in SF, coding... by whispering to Cursor Agent using his mic (a BOYA Gooseneck that costs ~$70).

I was standing next to him and heard nothing. Everyone in the office does the same.

I have no affiliation with Wispr Flow (this post is not paid, I have no form of financial ties or other etc) - but saw devs like Arvid Kahl use it and swear by it. So I also gave it a go, and it slowly is growing on me for agentic coding (when more context for the agent is more helpful than less). The setup is super clever: you press and hold a usually rarey used button (the fn button on the Mac) and then Wispr "listens" and when you stop, it insers the *meaning* of what you said (not the exact transcript!). When you ramble and self-correct, it gets it right most of the time!

So when I was in SF, I stopped at their offices to say hi to the team and learn more.

CEO and cofounder Tanay Kothari told me that based on their data of 20K users anonymously analyzed, devs who use Wispr do 18% "whispering" (vs 82% typing) in month 1, and 72% "whispering" (vs 28% typing) in month 5, and it grows almost linearly until that point.

It's an interesting new trend, and AI agents are the reason it works.

Update: in the comments, see notes on how whispering strains vocal cords as much as shouting - keep that in mind! My use case is I am alone in my room and talk with normal voice to the agent, similar to how James Stanier shared below. Perhaps this setup works better for those working remote / in a separate space?

I recently learned that OpenAI has started to hire junior software engineers... and it's working GREAT for them:

Here's what Sulman Choudhry (Head of ChatGPT Engineering) told me: he and the team have been very pleasantly surprised by how the junior engineers they hire are basically "super junior" engineers, who end up teaching the rest of the team ways to use AI tools in new ways, oftentimes more efficiently (and are very fast learners - probably partially because of using AI as well!)

Below is an amusing story that highlights how this new generation thinks a lot more "AI-native" in how they solve problems... to the point that it surprises even experienced engineers.

The companies that have stopped hiring juniors could well be missing out on exactly this type of energy spreading!

Update: my point with all this is not about OpenAI: it's that the whole "companies should not hire juniors because of X or Y" (which has been a recurring theme since 2020 to today) just probably don't make that much sense when you look at the bigger picture? A balanced team almost always works better. Companies like OpenAI can afford to only hire senior people (and did it for a long time!) and are learning the same. Same with eg Netflix (who are now hiring new grads!), Shopify (hiring 1,000 interns per year) etc

Forward-deployed engineers are extremely popular roles inside not just AI startups, but B2B startups (e.g. Ramp also has these roles.) They feel a lot closer to "product engineer" to me, though have a pull towards consultants. It's not an easy role to hire for, so companies pay good compensation for the right folks.

By the way, I noticed a trend to have mainstream media report weeks or months about the exact same topics I surface in The Pragmatic Engineer - which is very validating (makes me wonder if some of them started to subscribe to get ideas for topics to research!) Why does "vibe coding" not lead to anything productive, for the most part? A great person to answer is Addy Osmani: he has been working on Chrome for 10+ years, and has just published his new book: Beyond Vibe Coding.

One point Addy makes is that as software engineers, we should do a lot more AI-assisted software engineering and probably less vibe coding. But these tools are working, and they are changing how development is done in places like Google Chrome's dev team, and beyond.

An interesting quote from this episode from Addy:

“I have more recently been focusing on the idea of spec-driven development, having a very clear plan of what it is that I want to build. 

There are definitely places where I still vibe code. If it’s for a personal tool, something throw away, in the old days, if an engineer or a PM had an idea, maybe we would put together a quick mock, maybe we would put together a wireframe or a sketch or something like that. Perhaps work with UX to come up with something a little bit more polished.

I also think that tests are great. And if you are open to tests, it can be a great way of de-risking your use of LLMs and coding. Because sometimes, even if you’re using state-of-the-art models, you can end up in a situation where maybe the code looks more convoluted than you would expect."

And yes, these extreme hours are present, especially in SF... although I'm sensing that there's now a sense of exhaustion across startups that pushed so crazy hard in the summer, and people are burning out, hard (and not producing all that better output!) So I'd expect this approach to swing back to a more sustainable (but still hard-marching) pace, with high-intensity periods.

So by the time you’re reading this WSJ article, the trend of 996 seems to be slowly pulling back - at least based on what I am seeing and sensing.
