Career-wise, I've gone the long way round...

I trained as a designer. Chanced it as a copywriter. getting my first ad agency job when Margaret Thatcher was still PM. 

Later I dabbled as a creative director. 

Research and data have followed me. Back in my agency days, I'd praise research if it supported my thinking, then trash it when it challenged my ideas. 

I learned from academics, colleagues and YouTube. I read research methods and frameworks like Design Thinking and Behavioural Economics. Enrolled in an MBA to deepen my knowledge. 

These days I’m co-founder of research consultancy, Runway. 

You’ll find me:

The invisible power behind a case study…

We don’t fall in love with ideas. We fall in love with people living those ideas.

A case study is that in miniature. A story of struggle, change, and consequence. 

Our brains don’t spark for bullet points; they light up for conflict, risk, and the moment something finally clicks. 

When we hear how someone faced a problem and changed, we run the simulation ourselves. 
And for a heartbeat, we become them.

That’s the real magic: they let us feel the truth before we can reason with it.

In my book Research for Growth, every case study has been disguised, names blurred, numbers swapped, but the emotional truth remains. 

Why? Because if you’re a business owner new to research, a story does what no methodology ever can: it makes the value obvious.

The research industry loves its acronyms and frameworks. Fair enough, it’s built on science. 

But for most business leaders, there’s only one question that matters: could this work for me in real life?

These days I've learned that research is just new knowledge – how you act on it is the exciting bit. An average day might be:

– testing prototypes & apps with customers
– evaluating existing product positioning 
– debriefing client teams who're building new products

I write and talk about research under my moniker, The Audience Detective. I'm a Visiting Tutor at The Arts University Bournemouth, and Bournemouth University.
