A moment of immense gratitude.

Yesterday I finally had the chance to meet a dear friend and colleague in person. I first connected with Kristina Rua several years ago through LinkedIn. What began as a simple networking conversation between two healthcare leaders has grown into a meaningful friendship rooted in trust, shared values, and purpose.

Kristina embodies authenticity in every way as a mom, nurse, and leader. Spending time together, sharing stories, and collaborating on how we can advance more equitable workforce development filled my heart in ways that are hard to put into words.

I recently had a meaningful conversation with Jason Raitz on his Speak with People show about what it really means to lead with empathy and still drive results, especially in complex systems like healthcare, education, and workforce transformation. 

It wasn’t just theory; we talked about real ways leaders can blend strategy with humanity to build cultures where people feel seen, heard, and empowered to do their best work.  

We explored how empathy isn’t a soft add-on, it’s a leadership differentiator. When leaders choose to understand before being understood, they unlock teams that are resilient, innovative, and committed.

Have you ever had to justify your right to simply exist?

For a long time, I lived quietly. Carefully. Not because I wasn’t proud of who I am but because safety, belonging, and acceptance felt conditional. Pride, for me, was never about celebration for celebration’s sake. It was about survival. It was about the moment I realized I deserved the same dignity, opportunity, and peace as anyone else.

I didn’t come out because it was trendy or easy. I came out because hiding was slowly costing me pieces of myself. Pride became less about waving a flag and more about standing firm in my humanity, especially in rooms, workplaces, and systems that weren’t always built with people like me in mind.

If you’ve never needed Pride, that’s not something to resent, it’s something to reflect on with gratitude. And if you have needed it, know this: you’re not alone, and your story matters more than you may realize.

This quote brought me back to a moment I’ll never forget. When I graduated high school, my great aunt gave me a poem called My Dear, Don’t Ever Quit. At the time, I appreciated the gesture, but I don’t think I fully understood the depth of her wisdom. Years later, those words echo louder than ever.

Life doesn’t ask for permission before it challenges us. It just shows up hard, unexpected, and sometimes unfair. But I’ve learned that the moments that knock us down often carry the seeds of our next becoming.

Forward doesn’t always mean fast. Sometimes it simply means choosing not to quit on yourself, even when the path feels unclear.

I’m holding gratitude for her today and for every person who believed in us before we fully believed in ourselves.

“If you are not personally free to be yourself in that most important of all human activities, the expression of love, then life itself loses its meaning.” This insight from Harvey Milk lands deeply because it names something many people feel but struggle to articulate.

When people are not free to live honestly, love openly, or show up as who they truly are, something essential begins to fade. It does not disappear all at once. It happens slowly, through self editing, silence, and the subtle belief that belonging requires shrinking. Over time, life may continue moving forward, but it loses color, depth, and purpose.

This is not only a personal truth. It is a leadership truth. The environments we create either give people permission to be whole or teach them to hide. True leadership is not about control or conformity. It is about creating spaces where people can tell the truth, offer love, and be seen without fear.

Love is not a side note to life or work. It is the foundation of meaning, connection, and impact. When we protect the freedom to express it, we protect people’s humanity.

I am reflecting on this today and asking myself where I can create more room for others to live and lead more freely. Where can you do the same, at home, at work, or in your community?

Workforce development without equity isn’t a strategy. It’s a blind spot.

If people don’t see themselves in the future of work, if they don’t have early exposure, clear information, or real pathways forward, we shouldn’t be surprised when talent shortages persist and trust erodes. Equity is how we move from opportunity being accidental to opportunity being intentional.

Career awareness has to start early, be honest, and be accessible. Pathways must be visible, supported, and designed for real lives, working adults, caregivers, first-generation learners, and those who have been historically overlooked. When we do this well, we don’t just fill jobs. We unlock purpose, dignity, and mobility.

I’m sitting with a deep sense of gratitude as I reflect on an action-packed week across South Florida.

President Jimmy Carter lived his life with a rare kind of moral clarity. Time and again, he reminded us that faith was never meant to be a weapon to divide people, but a compass to guide us toward love, dignity, and shared humanity.

Through his words and his life’s work, President Carter made it clear that we are called to live with compassion, to resist judgment, and to see the inherent worth in every person. He understood that leadership rooted in faith should heal, not harm. Unite, not exclude.

When I sit down and think about workforce development, I’m reminded of a powerful conversation I had with Andy Storch.

We talked about something that feels more urgent every day. Employers can’t sit on the sidelines anymore.

If we truly care about career and economic mobility, employers must lead hand in hand with academic partners. Not as customers of talent, but as co architects of pathways. Clear pathways. Supported pathways. Pathways that honor the lived experience of learners and workers, not just job descriptions.

Workforce development isn’t a program.
It’s a shared responsibility.
And collaboration isn’t optional. It’s the work.

So here’s my call to action.

If you’re an employer, step forward and help design the future you’re hiring into.

If you’re an educator, invite industry in early and often.

If you’re a leader, ask yourself whether your partnerships are truly creating mobility or just maintaining the status quo.

Walking past the nursing wall at University of Miami Health and reading Jean Watson’s words, I immediately thought of my Mom; and of every nurse I’ve had the privilege to know and work alongside.

Healing isn’t just clinical skill.
It’s presence.
It’s connection.
It’s choosing, moment after moment, to truly see another human being, often on the hardest day of their life.

That is the quiet, sacred work nurses do every single day.

Nurses carry science in one hand and humanity in the other. They show up with competence, courage, compassion, and heart, even when they’re exhausted, stretched thin, or unseen. Our healthcare system doesn’t just run because of nurses. It heals because of them.

Today, I’m filled with gratitude.
For my Mom.
For the nurses who shaped my career.
For the nurses who continue to shape lives in ways they may never fully realize.

Let me ask you something real.

How often do we let someone else’s inability to see our worth shape how we see ourselves?

Your value doesn’t decrease because someone else can’t recognize it.

As leaders and as humans, we sometimes internalize silence, dismissal, or lack of recognition as a reflection of our worth. It isn’t. It never was.

Your value is rooted in who you are.
In how you show up for others.

In the care you give, the love you extend, and the impact you make even when no one is watching.

Not everyone will have the capacity, awareness, or courage to see you fully. That does not make you smaller. It simply reveals their limits.

I’ve learned this the hard way. And I’ve learned that honoring your own worth is an act of leadership. It is how we protect our energy, our purpose, and our humanity.
