I talk a lot about India, as I feel that it’s like a second home. But, there is something I rarely say out loud, and maybe this is the right place to say it. Our main investor in Motion Informatics is a successful Indian businessman, but that description does not come close to who he really is. He is someone, that I have known for over 20 years, a man and family with real depth. Someone who carries philosophy, religion, and responsibility in a way that feels both grounding and inspiring. He is a proud Hindu, and you can feel that pride not in loud words, but in the calm way he makes decisions and the gentle way he treats people.

There were moments when things were uncertain and he stayed steady. He believed in the work long before the world did. He believed in me at times when the path was not clear. The truth

I was standing at my booth at Medica when a distributor from Germany walked up and asked to see the device. It was the first time we met. I showed him how it works, and he paid close attention to every detail.

When the demo ended, he looked at me and asked, Gary, have you ever failed? I asked him, failed in what? He said, with a product. I told him, yes, who hasn’t?

He nodded and said he had spent four days talking to hundreds of manufacturers, and every one of them claimed they had never failed. He said I was the first person who answered honestly.

Then he said, you are the person I want to work with.

Sometimes the simplest truth is what people connect to most.

Lessons I Learned This Week as a Startup CEO

On Monday I met with our partners in Thailand. It was the first time in a while that I felt how much being in the same room matters. The conversations flowed differently. The energy was warmer. You can sense things that a screen never shows.

We spoke about projects, challenges, and plans, but what stayed with me was the feeling that everyone truly cared. Partnerships grow through that kind of care, through time, through showing up. I left that meeting reminded that relationships, not contracts, are what build everything real.

Loyalty

Loyalty is one of those words that sound simple until life starts testing it. We talk about being loyal to our friends, to our colleagues, to our company. But loyalty is not about saying yes to everything. I am not a yes man. Never was.

For me, loyalty is built on trust, respect, and honesty. It means standing beside the people and the principles you believe in, even when it makes things harder. Sometimes that means saying no. Sometimes it means walking a lonely road for a while.

Lately I feel my loyalty has been tested, too often and not always fairly. I give everything to the people who are loyal to me. That is who I am. When that is questioned, it cuts deep.

But I have learned that real loyalty is not about comfort. It is about showing up, even when it is uncomfortable. It is about speaking the truth, even when silence would be easier.

The hardest part is knowing when to stay quiet and when to stand your ground. I would rather stand my ground.

Lessons I Learned This Week as a Startup CEO

I love writing, its always been a passion of mine. I have 3 written books (not finished yet but are over 20 years old) and a PhD dissertation that has already been published. My team complains that when I prepare a product design or internal memo, its like I am writing a book, they find it too long! But I love it and need to learn to write less. Unfortunately, lately, I have found that many posts written here are too generic, too pointed, too ChatGPT. They are not from the heart.

So this week I decided to start writing these notes again (I did it in the past, but stopped when life became crazy)! Maybe it is a kind of therapy, a way to make sense of the noise by turning experience into words that remind me why I started in the first place. When you are leading a company, there are so many things you cannot say out loud in the moment. Too many thoughts that stay half-formed, half-swallowed, waiting for the right time that never comes. Writing helps me make sense of it all. It slows the noise and gives the thoughts a place to land.

I think of this as my diary, but also as a conversation. I want to share the real parts of this journey, not the polished ones. The truth is, being at the top can feel lonely sometimes. Not because people are not there, but because you are expected to stay steady even when you are unsure. 

So if something I write feels familiar or if you see it differently, I would really love to hear your view. I think we all learn better when we stop pretending to have all the answers.

As a Startup CEO, Why I Insist on Radical Ownership

In my world, nothing moves unless someone takes full responsibility for it. We are building technology that changes lives, and that does not happen through delegation but rather through ownership.

When something breaks, I expect it fixed. When there is a gap, I expect it filled. When something goes wrong, the right people step forward without waiting to be asked. That mindset is what separates startup teams from everyone else (I wrote about this a few weeks ago regarding the corporate vs the startup).

Radical ownership is not about job titles or checklists. It is about accountability to the mission itself. Every person on the team must feel that the company’s success depends on them, because it does.

As my friends know, at Motion Informatics, I do not look for people who follow. I look for people who lead from wherever they stand.

When everyone owns the outcome, there is no “someone should.” Everyone is the someone. It does not matter who you are in the company, a VP or a junior manager, you are the “someone.” If you don’t think that I see it, rest assured, I do!

That is how we build, we move, and we win.

As a Startup CEO, Why Speed Matters More Than Perfection

I feel that the biggest killer of momentum in a startup is waiting to be ready.
I have seen teams spend months reviewing and adjusting, waiting for the perfect version before moving. 

The truth is that perfection never arrives. For the record, unfortuately, I am a perfectionist and have OCD tendencies, so I know the hardships, believe me!

Startups live on movement and we learn more from one week of execution than from a month of planning. Clarity comes from doing, not from talking.
Every week you wait is a week someone else learns what you could have discovered.

I try to move even when things are not complete but realistically we are tied down by regulatory concerns and issues that we must abide by and there are no corners that we can cut. So in order to overcome this, we have to release, observe, and adapt. Speed gives us information, and information drives improvement.

I have learned over the years that perfection is the result of iteration, not hesitation and if you wait to be ready, you are already behind.

Medica and the question everyone kept asking

Just returned from Medica, and again people kept asking how I manage such a close partnership with India. It is a question I hear in many places, not only at Medica, and it almost became a running theme this year. After the small talk, the real question always arrived. How does that even happen work? You know (and then they start with all the stereotypes).

The truth is that working across cultures is not the challenge people imagine. Most of the time it is something beautiful. India and Israel look far apart on a map, but when you get down to how we think and how we build, we are not far at all. The same urgency. The same drive. The same need to create something that helps people live healthier, stronger lives. In the medical devices world this connection becomes even deeper, because you feel how real the impact is.

I have always believed that I was put here to help in whatever way I can. To make life a little easier for people who need strength. When you find someone from another culture who wakes up with that same intention, the partnership stops being about business. It becomes trust. It becomes purpose. It becomes something that feels right.

Working across cultures is not always simple, but when the trust is real, it becomes natural. It reminds me that the world is smaller than we think and that people who share a purpose will always find each other.

Lessons I Learned This Week as a Startup CEO

Every minuite/day/week/month/ in this role teaches me something new, and not always in the way I expect.

This week, I realized how easy it is to confuse involvement with impact. I stepped into a few discussions thinking I was helping when, in reality, the team already had it under control. My instinct was to steer, but what they needed was space.

I’m starting to see that being a new CEO isn’t about knowing everything, it’s about trusting the people around you to do what they do best.
It feels uncomfortable at first, especially when you are used to driving every detail. But I’m learning that leadership is built on trust, communication, and timing.

Maybe that is the real growth curve for any new CEO, learning that sometimes the best move is to get out of the way.

I just wrapped up a few days in India that left me tired in the best possible way, the kind of tired that comes from real work and real connection. I spent my days moving between meetings with the Biorad leadership, long and deep conversations with the executives who are building our presence in the region, and visits to hospitals where our partnerships start to feel real. 

In the evenings I found myself with old friends, catching up over late dinners (and many beers), and remembering why I always feel at home here. It reminded me that a business trip is never only about business rather it is about people, progress, and the feeling that the work we are doing is taking shape in the world. 

Now that is a business trip.

I read many years ago in a book about the Indian culture that motivation gets you started but discipline keeps you in the game (freely translated from memory).

Motivation feels good but discipline builds results. Startups are not built on excitement, rather they are built on consistency, accountability, and the ability to keep showing up when the novelty is gone.

I do not expect my team to feel inspired every day. I expect them to stay focused, execute with intent, and deliver outcomes.

At Motion Informatics, we try to rely on rhythm, not emotion (very difficult in a small startup). Discipline creates progress one decision at a time.
