Bad follow-ups kill momentum.

And most project managers don’t even realize they’re doing it.

You write:

"Just checking in to see if you had a chance to look at this."

They read: "This isn’t urgent, feel free to ignore."

Weak follow-ups = missed deadlines, misalignment, and confusion.

Here’s what effective PMs do instead:

→ They give clear deadlines.
→ They explain why the follow-up matters.
→ They keep the tone respectful but direct.
→ They remove blockers instead of waiting for updates.

Following up isn’t just a task.

It’s a skill.

A soft skill with a hard impact.

Master it, and your projects move faster, smoother, and with less drama.

This is how many projects feel.

The boat is leaking. 
Water is coming in fast.

Developers are working hard, bailing water non-stop.

And the project manager says:

Without alignment, the project turns into:

🔥 “I thought you were handling that?”

With alignment?

Less chaotic .

If you’re studying for PMP the wrong way…

You will fail.

Not because you’re not smart.

But because you’re studying like it’s 2015.

Let me save you months of frustration

First understand the weight.

This exam is NOT just formulas and processes.

• 42% People (leadership, conflict, team dynamics) 
• 50% Process (planning, execution, delivery) 
• 8% Business environment

Translation?
If you ignore leadership and Agile thinking… you’re in trouble.

Exam structure?

• 180 questions 
• 230 minutes 
• Scenario-based 
• Designed to test judgment, not memory

They don’t want definitions. 
They want to know what you would do NEXT. 
That word alone eliminates half the wrong answers.

The 5 process groups still matter:
Initiating. Planning. Executing. Monitoring & Controlling. Closing.

Memorizing them won’t save you. 

Understanding WHY they exist will.
The 10 knowledge areas?

Integration. Scope. Schedule. Cost. Quality. Resources. Communication. Risk. Procurement. Stakeholders.

Don’t memorize descriptions. 
Understand how they connect. 
You need to understand how PMI wants you to think.

And please hear this:

Think servant leadership. 
Remove blockers. 
Support the team. 
Avoid command-and-control answers.

If an option sounds aggressive, reactive, or political… It’s probably wrong.

Final advice:
Read the question twice. 
Look for “first” or “next.” 
Eliminate extreme answers.

This exam rewards calm leaders.

Not panicked managers.

The truth is simple: The PMP badge, like any other professional badge, is only as good as the person standing behind it.

→ Slow decision-making that quietly delays the entire timeline.
→ Teams that stop raising problems because nobody listens.

None of these risks looks dramatic at first. 

But they quietly drain momentum from the project.

Great project managers do more than track risks.

They watch the human signals around the project. 

Because culture, communication, and leadership often determine success.

Not the risk register.

The silent project killers

Project managers keep asking me the same questions about the PMP.

So let’s clear it up.

First one:

1.“Will PMP increase my salary?”

It can. 
But let’s be real. 
The certificate opens the door.

Your performance keeps you in the room. 
Nobody pays you more because you framed a certificate. 
They pay for outcomes. 
Revenue impact. 
Risk reduction. 
Delivery.

If you can’t execute, the letters don’t matter.

2.“Do I need to memorise everything in PMBOK?” 
No.

This isn’t about memorising a book.

The exam tests how you think.

It tests:

• Mindset 
• Servant leadership 
• Value delivery 
• Decision-making under pressure

If you study to memorize, you’ll panic in the exam. 
If you study to understand how a PM thinks, you’ll be fine.

3.“Is PMP even worth it?”

If you want global credibility? Yes. 
If you think it’s a lottery ticket to instant success?

No.

It’s leverage. 
Not magic.

It increases your surface area of opportunity. 
What you do after that is on you.

4.“If I fail, can I take it again?”

Yes. Failing isn’t fatal.

Everyone on your team junior, senior, or somewhere in between has something to teach you.

It’s easy to get caught up in titles, experience, or who “should” know more.

But the reality? 

Great ideas, smart solutions, and fresh perspectives can come from anywhere.

I’ve seen it time and time again: a new team member spots a risk I didn’t see.

A colleague in a different department suggests a workflow tweak that saves us hours.

A junior analyst asks a simple question that completely changes the way I approach a problem.

Being a project manager isn’t just about planning and deadlines.

It’s about listening, being open, and learning from the people around you.

Here’s something you can do right now:

→This week, ask someone you normally wouldn’t for their opinion on a challenge you’re facing.
→ Take a note of one insight or idea that surprises you.
→Reflect on how it changes your approach, even slightly.

Your team is full of knowledge, your job is to tap into it.

Remember: leadership isn’t about having all the answers.

Over-explaining: If you give 5 reasons for a decision, people look for 5 ways to argue. Give one. Move on.

Silent deadline slips: Trust isn't lost when you're late; it's lost when you're late and silent. Flag it early.

Leading with "Sorry": Stop apologizing for doing your job. Swap "Sorry for the delay" for "Thanks for your patience."

Avoiding hard talks: Small fires become infernos if you don't address them today.

Hiding problems: Bad news is like fish it doesn't get better with age.

Validation-seeking: Don’t ask "Is that okay?" State your recommendation first.
