I am a Non-Executive Director, Strategic Advisor, and former CEO who specializes in technology-driven turnarounds and institutional growth across the DACH region and the Middle East.

I don't just advise on trends; I execute financial turnarounds.

Gulf International Bank (Bahrain/KSA): As a Board Member and Chair of the Innovation Committee, I helped steer a strategic turnaround from a $227m net loss (2018) to a $134.8m net profit (2024). 

Addiko Bank (Vienna): As a Supervisory Board Member and business transformation lead, I guided the transformation of a break-even, branch-heavy universal bank into a focused, profitable, digital-driven consumer & SME specialist. 

PayU (Global): Served on the Risk Advisory Board during a period culminating in a $610m exit for the Eastern Europe/Africa/Latam division.

I serve on the boards of institutions that define the future of finance, acting as a bridge between European engineering and Middle Eastern capital (Vision 2030):

The Challenger: As CEO of Fidor (2013-2015), I led the world's first Neobank, winning Celent's "Model Bank of the Year" and pioneering crypto and open banking. 

The Incumbent: Spent 20 years at Deutsche Bank, rising to Director of Strategy & Innovation, preparing billion-euro IT transformations.

Ich habe mir die aktuelle BioCatch-Studie zum deutschen Bankensektor angesehen. Die Ergebnisse sind ein Weckruf an der Schnittstelle von Technologie, Regulierung und Kundenvertrauen.

Hier sind meine 3 Key Takeaways:

1️⃣ Das Volumen explodiert: 56% der Institute melden steigende Betrugsversuche. Zwei Drittel der Banken in Deutschland verzeichnen bereits jährliche Verluste von über 10 Mio. USD – das ist deutlich mehr als der globale Durchschnitt.

2️⃣ Faktor Mensch vs. Technik: Während 84% glauben, gegen KI-Angriffe gewappnet zu sein, werden immer noch 53% der Fälle manuell bearbeitet. Nur 41% nutzen Machine Learning in der Prävention. Hier klafft eine gefährliche Lücke zwischen Selbstbild und technologischer Realität.

3️⃣ Reputation vs. Erstattung: 59% sehen das Reputationsrisiko als kritisch an, aber nur 36% erstatten mehr als die Hälfte der Schäden aus Social Engineering. Mit PSD3 und PSR kommt hier ein gewaltiger regulatorischer Druck auf die Häuser zu.

Mein Fazit: „Embedded AI“ ist kein Buzzword mehr, sondern überlebenswichtig. Wer Betrug weiterhin vorwiegend manuell bekämpft, wird im Zeitalter von agentenbasierter KI das Nachsehen haben. Vertrauen ist die härteste Währung im Banking – und diese wird gerade massiv angegriffen.

Most banks are currently "zombie institutions"—they just haven’t checked their pulse yet.

We are witnessing the brutal hollowing out of the financial sector. The era where a banking license was a business model is over. 

Today, you face a binary choice:

1️⃣ Become a Developer: Own the customer interface. Build ecosystems. Compete with Apple and Revolut. (Requires top-tier talent and deep pockets).

2️⃣ Become a Seller: Own the infrastructure. Be the invisible, hyper-efficient plumbing for the brands people actually love. (Requires ruthless efficiency and a sub-30% Cost-to-Income ratio).

If you are just "maintaining" your current position, you are choosing slow liquidation. In the digital economy, being average is a death sentence.

Why the Risk Committee is the New Engine of Innovation

If you ask most banking executives, they will tell you the Risk and Compliance departments are the "brakes" of the organization.

I fundamentally disagree.

Good brakes don't exist to slow the car down; they exist so you can drive fast safely.

As we navigate 2026, the complexity of financial services is compounding. We are dealing with AI-driven credit models, institutional digital assets, and real-time cross-border supply chain finance.

In this environment, a weak Risk Committee doesn't just invite regulatory fines—it actively destroys commercial agility. If your governance isn't airtight, you cannot innovate. Period.

Having chaired Risk, NRC, and Digital Committees across multiple jurisdictions (from the EU to the GCC), I’ve found that the best boards treat Risk as a competitive advantage.

How to spot a strategic Risk function:

🔭 Proactive, not Reactive: They don't just audit past mistakes; they model future technology risks before a single line of code is written.

⚙️ Technically Fluent: They don't rely solely on the CIO's translation. The committee possesses the technical depth to challenge architectural decisions directly.

📈 Commercially Aligned: They understand that their ultimate job is to protect shareholder value and enable profitable scale.

My advice to fellow Directors 💡

Don't separate your "Innovation Strategy" from your "Risk Strategy." They are two sides of the exact same coin. If you want to scale the business, you must first scale the governance.

The next major client demographic for financial institutions won’t be retail or corporate. It will be algorithms.

Every boardroom today is captivated by Artificial Intelligence. Boards are discussing how AI will optimize workforce, enhance risk models, 
and streamline operations.

But there is a massive blind spot in the global financial conversation: 
 ❓ How does an autonomous AI actually pay for things ❓

If an AI agent is tasked with independently sourcing data, purchasing cloud computing power, or negotiating a supply chain contract, it cannot use the traditional banking system. An algorithm does not have a passport. It cannot pass a traditional KYC check. It cannot wait for T+2 settlement times.

The traditional financial rails were built for humans. Digital assets were built for the internet.

As the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) economy scales, AI will rely on blockchain infrastructure, smart contracts, and stablecoins to transact with instant, cryptographic finality.
