Ahrefs is a goldmine for digital PR link building.

We used Ahrefs data to get links for our client Ahrefs in top tier publications.

But you don’t have to be Ahrefs to use Ahrefs data to get links.

You can simply quote your client as the company who analysed Ahrefs data, and you can get similar links.

Here are some digital PR campaign ideas you can run with Ahrefs data:

✅ Finance:

◾️ Most Googled stocks in each country in Europe

Create a list of top 250 stocks, then find out their search volumes in every European country via Keyword Explorer.

✅ Automotive:

◾️ Each country’s favourite car, according to Google searches

Create a seed list of 300 most popular car models (make sure you have country-specific models too, not just global), then find out the search volumes in each country via Ahrefs Keyword Explorer.

Ranking in AI search is easy.

Just rank on Google/Bing organic for the keywords that AI is searching for when generating the response, and you will be listed.

After five hours, and $130 spent on Claude API calls, I finally managed to remove a blue outline border for a TinyMCE text editor when on focus.

That's what I call hyper relevant 🤩

We also landed in Guitar World, and many other music related publications. Free of charge!

We analysed the 5,000 most-viewed tabs and chord sheets on Ultimate Guitar. 

From this, 3,424 songs from 1,340 artists were put under the microscope.

We used page view numbers to determine the players and bands that are most popular with guitarists.

We have found that Ed Sheeran is inspiring more people to play the guitar than The Beatles.

We wrote up a nice report on our findings, and sent it out to 1,000+ journalists who write about music.

The piece was a big hit, generating massive links for our client in industry specific publications.

The fun part is that the data was a simple, page views based dataset.

We got free links in mainstream news outlets by listing the pros and cons of sleep divorce.

This is a great example of an expert commentary digital PR campaign.

Journalists need experts whom they can present in their articles, to increase the credibility of the article. 

Journalists also need PR agencies and PR executives in order to have a variety of ideas and stories that they would not have otherwise.

This is how you execute an expert commentary campaign, from A to Z:

TALK TO THE CLIENT

It starts with educating the client about why you need to run the types of stories you are running.

Let’a say if a client is selling beds they might ask you why are you not running stories about their beds, and about how they advise people on how great their air cooled mattresses are.

In that case, you’ll have to explain that nobody in the press cares about their products, and what we want is thought leadership, instead.

How to fall asleep fast. How often you should wash your bed sheets. The three dangerous sleep positions that can shorten your lifespan. And so on.

Something that journalists want to cover, consistently.
THE IDEA

A good expert commentary digital PR idea is NOT:

❌ About your client’s products or services

❌ Something very unique that nobody ever wrote about

❌ Something that looks and feels like a title for a blog post

A good expert commentary digital PR idea IS:

✅ Something that mainstream news outlets are consistently writing about

✅ Something that presents your client as a thought leader

✅ Something that appeals to a wide audience

✅ Something that you would click on in Google Discover

✅ Something that can be shared in a 300-500 words email


THE EMAIL

Once you have the idea, ask for a quote from your client. You can guide your client on the style of the quote, and even present them with a draft version so they can see how it should look like.

The expert quote can be between 100-300 words.

Once your client provided or approved the quote, write up the pitch email.

Cut out all the fluff, and get straight to the point. Once you did that, cut out the fluff even more.

THE OUTREACH

For sending emails, you can start with Prowly, which is a non-contract based platform and you can pay £250 per month to send emails.

For the more comprehensive databases, you will have Muckrack, Roxhill and Cision. These are better curated databases, but they start from £600 per month and you will have to sign a one year contract with them.

THE FOLLOW-UP

Once your first emails went out, don’t hold back and follow up within a week.

Expert commentary digital PR is the simplest, most capable link building technique out there. 

And the best part is that they are low risk and less resource intensive than a large data study. If a story flops, and does not get picked up by the press, you can rinse and repeat.

Use AI as a tool, not as a humanless end-to-end solution.

I am a big adopter of AI, and we have built pretty advanced systems with AI.

But still, AI should NOT be used for:

- Publishing raw, AI-written content
- Creating final copies of press releases
- Coming up with facts or data on its own

For press release writing, let it create the first draft for you.

Just add:

◾️ An expert quote on behalf of a real expert
◾️ A dataset that you or your team have compiled

And AI will gloriously write up a very good draft on it.

Then, spend 10-30 minutes to fact check, edit and polish it up to a standard that you can be proud of.

This will shorten the execution time by up to 90% in some cases, and will make you more productive, while keeping the output high quality and accurate.

That's how AI should be used.

Digital PR tip: Data is like colours.

You can mix them together, and create unlimited new stories from them.
