Social media makes starting a business look like a quick side hustle that prints money.

In reality, it’s more like committing to a martial arts journey (or training for a marathon).

Imagine you decide you want to earn a black belt.

You don’t begin by writing a 50-page strategy document about kicks and throws, you start by stepping into a dojo.

First comes the 𝐯𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞.
You research a few dojos in your city.
You try a beginner package — maybe a 10-class trial.
You buy or borrow a uniform. Then you step on the mat.

And yes, there’s risk — soreness, bruises, maybe even injury.
Just like starting a business comes with financial, reputational, and career risk.

Very quickly you start learning things:
• Do I actually enjoy this?
• Can my body handle the training?
• Do I like the instructor and the people at the dojo?
• Can I realistically commit the time?

That’s the equivalent of vetting a business idea.

Next comes 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠.
You sign up for a longer membership.
You understand expectations: show up regularly, train consistently, progress belt by belt.
That’s your business plan.
Not perfect. Not final. But a commitment to the path.

Then comes the part most people underestimate: 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
Training three or four times a week.
Repeating the same movements hundreds of times.
Improving a little each session.

Sometimes the feedback is immediate — from your instructor or a sparring partner.
In business, the feedback comes from the market: rejected/won proposals, ignored/successful campaigns, investors passing on your pitch.

And along the way, you adjust.
You refine technique.
You improve conditioning.
You change how you train.
That’s the 𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

The truth is, a black belt isn’t earned because someone wrote the perfect training plan.
It’s earned because they showed up consistently, adjusted along the way, and stayed on the mat long enough to improve.

And in martial arts, the black belt isn’t the end — it’s the beginning of real mastery.
Business works the same way. Getting to your first six figures isn’t the finish line — it’s proof you’re finally on the mat.

Feras: A black belt is just a white belt who didn’t quit.

One of my goals this year, with some nudging from my better half 🙂, is to read more fiction.

I usually read about business, personal development, and societal issues, so I set a simple rule: one novel a month alongside everything else.

For January, it was Steinbeck’s 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵. What I didn't realize was how much this novel would parallel some of those societal issues I already read about.

It’s a deeply saddening story, especially given my US roots in Tulsa, Oklahoma. What struck me wasn’t just the narrative, but what people endured during hard times that weren’t centuries ago. This was the 1930s.

For me, the story highlighted a spectrum of human behaviors:
- 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬. When the man of the house could no longer provide, leadership didn’t disappear; it moved. The mother became the stabilizing force. Calm mattered more than joy. If the mother held, the family held.

- 𝐒𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞. You didn’t burden others with your fears or failures. Telling might bring relief, but it spread the weight. Decency meant carrying your own load.

- 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞. Some people look out only for themselves. Others don’t. Hard times reveal the difference quickly.

It’s hard not to reflect on how much modern comfort makes us forget how fragile stability really is, and how important it is to live with integrity and deliberateness in all circumstances of life and business.

Right after the hostilities in the Gulf region began, I got on a call with my co-founders in Dubai.

Their safety — and that of our team and friends — was top of mind, of course. Business agenda came second.

But the conversion quickly shifted to talk about the short-term and long-term effects of the conflict on the business. 

As founders, we have obligations — to our team, to our partners, and to our customers.

It reminded me of other difficult moments in the past — economic downturns, other instances of regional unrest, even the pandemic.

When there’s instability, we have very little control over external events.

But we can control our foundation.

Here are practical principles every founder should have in place before the storm hits:

1- Build a real cash reserve. In times like this, cash is oxygen.
2- Tighten collections discipline
3- Negotiate favorable payment terms
4- Reduce fixed costs
5- Scenario-plan for downside cases
6- If you need to dip into your personal finances, don’t do it without getting your loved ones, and anyone impacted by the decision, fully on board

And just as important — lead with restraint.

Show empathy. Give your team space if they need it, but don’t inflame politics or spread panic. Your steadiness becomes their stability.

If instability becomes prolonged, revisit your scenarios. Diversify markets and revenue streams and stay flexible.

Storms will come.

Your preparation determines whether you bend… or break.

Above all, wishing safety and peace to everyone affected.

Most people don’t fail because their business idea is bad.

They fail because the idea doesn’t match their experience, the market, or their ability to execute it.

How to Choose the Right Consulting Idea (From the 26 That I Shared)

Last week, I had the privilege of speaking at NDNU on a topic close to my heart:
“Dishwasher to CEO: Key Forces for Your New Business in 2026.”

Too often, entrepreneurship is packaged as glamour, ease, and quick money.

That narrative sets people up to fail.

In this session, we focused on what actually matters:

Same post. Same author. Same audience. Completely different results.

Platform A: 36,592 impressions, 22 likes, several comments. (all organic)
Platform B: 0 engagement.

The content was identical. The audience was the same: professionals thinking about entrepreneurship or already building a business. Ironically, I have more connections/followers on platform B than platform A. 

Yet the results were wildly different.

Early engagement signals, audience behavior, and platform algorithms can drastically change how content spreads.

This is why you should be careful with oversimplified content marketing advice like:
“Just post everywhere.”

𝐀 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬:
• Platform culture — what feels native on LinkedIn may feel out of place on another platform.
• Algorithm signals — some platforms prioritize early engagement, others, dwell time, or comments.
• Audience intent — people open different platforms with different mindsets (learning, networking, entertainment).
• Network strength — your audience may simply be more active on one platform than another.
• Timing and distribution — even posting time can affect reach.

I’ve seen the same behavior with Short-form videos as well.
A Short might perform extremely well on LinkedIn but get almost no traction on YouTube — or the opposite.

𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲:
Instead of copying the same content everywhere and hoping for the best:
• If you’re starting out and unsure which platform fits you best, test across a few platforms.
• Observe where your audience actually engages.
• Identify the platform that best aligns with your skills, resources, content style—and where you’re willing to actively engage with the community.
• Focus the majority of your effort there—put 90%+ of your energy into mastering one primary channel before expanding.
• Adapt the format to each platform (hook, length, visuals, tone).
• Double down on the channels where traction appears.

Content marketing isn’t just about what you say.
It’s also about where — and how — you say it.

A common mistake I see among mid-career professionals right now — and it’s quietly limiting their options — is this:

The job market is tight.
And if you’re starting a business, finding clients isn’t easy either.

In both cases, I keep seeing the same issue:

Vanilla positioning.

“Strategy consultant.”
 “Marketing expert.”
 “AI consultant.”

If you pitch to everyone, you’re pitching to no one.

Niching isn’t about shrinking your opportunity — it’s a force multiplier.

In hiring, recruiters search by skills and context.
In business, buyers look for relevance and risk reduction.

The more generic you are, the harder it is for someone to say, “This is exactly who we need.”

LinkedIn’s newly released 2026 fastest-growing skills in the US report makes this clear: skills-based, applied, domain-specific expertise is winning — especially where AI intersects with real-world vertical knowledge.

Over time, you may niche up or niche down depending on your goals and market shifts.

Here’s a starting framework:
1️⃣ Focus on skills that are rising (see LinkedIn’s latest report).
2️⃣ Layer in vertical-specific knowledge (healthcare? fintech? manufacturing?).
3️⃣ Define your target market clearly (who specifically within the vertical: segment, geography, stage).
4️⃣ Pick your arena: startup, SMB, or enterprise — they require different playbooks.
5️⃣ Build working knowledge — ideally mastery — of applied AI in your space.
6️⃣ Strengthen distinctly human capabilities (communication, empathy, judgment).
7️⃣ If you’re a new consultant or founder, optimize for speed to first dollar.

Specialization doesn’t limit you — it clarifies you.

Most People Niche Wrong: 7 Fixes for 2026

I was on a podcast, and the host asked:
“𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙣𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙨𝙪𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨?”

There’s no silver bullet. But the question reminded me of something I read in David  Brooks’ The Road to Character: character isn’t automatic. It’s built under pressure, through effort, over time.

And sustained success is rarely a talent problem — it’s a character problem.

That’s why I keep coming back to discipline.

Because character is what you are when no one’s watching.
Discipline is how you build it when no one’s clapping.

Not discipline in just one area — discipline across our lives:

• Discipline of thought (our mindset)
• Discipline of behavior (what we choose to do)
• Discipline of relationships (who we surround ourselves with)
• Discipline of alignment (keeping our actions aligned with our north star)
• Discipline of intention (checking our motives before we act)

Now the real challenge: you can be disciplined in one area and undisciplined in another.

- You can crush it in the gym and still procrastinate on hard conversations.
- You can wake up at 5am and still avoid the one strategic move your career needs.

But two forces can help you build more capacity for discipline:

#𝟏 Research on habit formation and neuroplasticity suggests that repeated self-regulation helps strengthen the mental “circuits” behind executive control. Translation: practice it in one domain, and it becomes more accessible in others — if you choose to apply it.

#𝟐 Sometimes life hands you a season that forces that choice.
This week, nearly 2 billion people are observing Ramadan — fasting from dawn to sunset. That requires discipline, focus, and intention.

Around the same time, billions are celebrating the Lunar New Year, and 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse — a symbol of energy and momentum, which without discipline can quickly become impulsiveness and burnout.

Different traditions. Same muscle.

No matter your tradition — in life and in entrepreneurship — look for a place to practice:

No sales → no money.
No money → no business.

A thoughtful question came through my #AskFeras inbox this week — from a 17-year-old founder.

“I’m learning to program and want to launch a business in college.
 You often say founders need to learn sales.
 But I don’t know where to start.
 And how do you convince someone to become a co-founder?”

First, I told him I’m impressed he’s thinking about this at 17. 

Learning to code and thinking about sales already puts him ahead of many founders twice his age. (I was playing video games and coasting at 17 :)).

Here’s the reality I shared with him.
𝐎𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬
The way I learned sales (from the ground up) was simple: I had to.

Sales isn’t something you only study.
It’s something you learn through education and application.

Yes, watch videos, read books, learn the frameworks.
But then apply them immediately.

Start small:
• Talk to potential customers 𝐛̲𝐞̲𝐟̲𝐨̲𝐫̲𝐞̲ building
• Ask about their problems
• Show them what you’re building
• Ask if they’d try it

𝐎𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠
Whether you’re selling software, services, or consulting, the fundamentals are the same:
• Understand the customer’s problem
• Communicate the value clearly
• Ask for the commitment

𝐎𝐧 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Early founders often underestimate how much direct outreach is required.

You’ll likely need to:
• Talk to people in person
• Email potential customers
• Post in communities where your audience hangs out
• Sometimes even pick up the phone

Not glamorous. But extremely effective.

𝐎𝐧 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐜𝐨-𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫
Choosing a co-founder is one of the most consequential decisions you’ll make.

Start within your existing network. Look for people you already respect and trust.

Ideally someone who shares the same values, and complements your skills, not duplicates them.

Strong co-founders don’t join because they love your idea.
They join because they believe in the problem, the opportunity, and you.

At 17, the best investment he can make isn’t perfection… it’s starting early and learning fast.

The Cult of Failing Forward

Boasting about mistakes has become fashionable in US culture, most notably in the realm of business and entrepreneurship.

High-profile business personalities publicly humble-brag about their vulnerabilities and their countless mess-ups. In reality, they had to get many more things right than wrong, or their ventures would not have survived. Legions of other founders have made too many mistakes to recover from. Their stories are rarely told.

Starting a business is a risky proposition. Depending on the study, more than half of new businesses fail within the first few years. 

If you're embarking down the entrepreneurship path, be mindful of this inherent risk, and do the due diligence to keep yourself from reinventing wheels and sprinting in the wrong direction. Research, reflection, and down-to-earth support from people who have been where you want to go can help keep you on the right side of the success statistics.

I don't say any of this because I think that every misstep in business spells disaster. I know that overplanning, hesitation, and perfectionism kill as many ventures as underplanning and rashness. 

I say this because it's disingenuous and irresponsible to encourage someone with a family to support and two months of mortgage in the bank to "move fast and break things." Enough "failing forward" can lead to disappointment and destitution. Sometimes there's a better way.

Where’s the line between #resilience and #recklessness?

A founder recently asked this:

“We secured funding from an investor, but there’s no written agreement on share allocation.
Now the investor is claiming 80% ownership.
The company is already registered, and one founder currently owns 100%.
What should we do?”

Situations like this are more common than people think.

My advice was simple:

If you and your co-founder are on good terms — and genuinely want to keep building this together — bring in a business/startup attorney that both of you trust and agree on.

Not one lawyer for you and another for your partner to argue things out.

Instead, hire one neutral attorney whose role is to walk both of you through how a proper partnership and investment structure should be set up.

They’ll help you clarify:
• Equity structure
• Voting control
• Roles and responsibilities
• What happens if a partner wants out
• And how to properly handle the situation with the investor

Yes, this will cost money, it’s worth every penny.
