How I would NOT prepare someone for an interview or professional panel:

1. Preparation: Tell them to “just be confident.” No structure needed. Winging it builds character.
2. Answers: Encourage long, detailed explanations. The more technical jargon, the better. Clarity is overrated.
3. Question listening: Start answering before the panel finishes the question. Shows enthusiasm.
4. Structure: Avoid it completely. Why follow a framework when you can wander creatively?
5. Outcomes: Never state the result. Let the interviewer guess what happened. Mystery builds suspense.
6. Ownership: Replace “I did” with “we were involved.” Keep your contribution safely hidden.
7. Closing: End every answer with “…so yeah.” Strong finish.

If your interview preparation looks anything like the above: You’re making it really hard for assessors to see your capability. And very easy for someone else to stand out.

When companies bring me in, it’s rarely for grammar.
It’s usually because something is at stake.
