It started because I loved seeing my friend Toby Awalt’s work in the wild. Now, I use it because it just works—fast, simple, no fuss.

Years ago, Toby and I worked together and used to say, “How cool would it be to see our product at Levi’s Stadium?” (Huge San Francisco 49ers fans, obviously.)

What started as a dream is now very much a reality—for him, and then some. 

And as a friend—and fellow marketer—it’s genuinely cool to watch something go from a tiny idea to a massive real-world thing.

This isn’t a plug. Just a proud moment. For a friend who’s doing the thing.

This was a comment in our Reddit, Inc. community.

And it stuck with me.

It’s true. Adults carry a deep fear of failing or looking dumb (especially in front of peers and managers).

Why? Ego? Childhood wounds? No clue. I’m not a therapist.

But I am a professional who drinks her own champagne.

And today was one of those moments where it hit me: Rapport helps people feel safer at work.

Last week at our executive dinner during DevLearn Conference & Expo in Vegas, Cassandra Dority, MSHS, HSE, QCP from Beacon Specialized Living dropped a stat that stopped me mid-bite:

“People retain 60% more from role play.”

Naturally, I went full nerd and went down a rabbit hole.

FIVE. PERCENT.

And yet… companies are still doing training that feels like a TED Talk no one asked for.

Yes, role play can be awkward.
But spending $$$ on training no one remembers seems more awkward to me. 

Give people a chance to practice, not just listen.

Let them mess up safely, recover smartly, and build real muscle memory.

If you're a Head of Sales or Sales Enablement trying to get everyone on your team aligned, here are my top 5 learnings from conversations with top sales leaders:

#1 It’s not about more training, it’s about better training. Simply throwing more content at your sales team isn't the answer. The best trainers focus on quality, relevance, and application. It’s about deeply understanding the sales team's daily challenges and tailoring solutions, not just checking a box.

#2 Focus on "Why" before "How." Top trainers emphasize that sales professionals need to understand the purpose behind a new strategy or skill before they fully adopt it. Connect the training directly to their individual success, career growth, and impact on customer relationships. When they see the personal benefit, engagement skyrockets.

#3 Make it stick with practice and role-play. Knowledge transfer is meaningless without application. The most effective programs move beyond passive learning by incorporating mandatory, scenario-based role-playing and simulations. This is where skills are actually forged—allowing reps to fail safely, receive immediate feedback, and build the muscle memory required for real-world customer conversations.

#4 Enable peer-to-peer coaching & social learning. The best training environments aren't just top-down. They foster a culture where sales reps learn from each other. Create platforms for sharing best practices, celebrate successes, and encourage informal coaching. This builds a stronger, more knowledgeable team from within.

#5 Measurement goes beyond quotas. While sales numbers are crucial, top trainers look at more than just the end result. They measure engagement with training, skill adoption/proficiency (especially post-role-play feedback), confidence levels, and qualitative feedback. This holistic view allows for continuous improvement and proves the ROI of your enablement efforts.

Bold of you to assume I’m free at that time. AEs... can we talk? 


I know you’re hustling. 

I know you’ve got quotas to hit. But booking a meeting on my calendar without asking if the time works... 

Not considerate. Not effective. 

I live in back-to-backs. My time is triple-booked before 10am. So when you drop a calendar invite without even checking my availability, it doesn’t feel proactive. It feels presumptuous. 

And now we’re stuck in the dreaded email dance: 
- “Does this time work?” 
- “No, how about this?” 
- “Sorry, that’s booked too.” 
Lather, rinse, repeat. 

Here's a thought: a quick ask goes a long way. 
Try: “I’d love to find time that works for you. What’s your availability like next week?” 

Same goal, just with a little grace. 

It’s not about the meeting. It’s about mutual respect. 
Let’s lead with that. It goes a long way.
