💡 10 Tips to Set Your People Up for Success

Being an effective leader provides one of the greatest impacts in any organization. 

The good news is that anyone can be a great leader; the key to that is taking care of your people.

👉 If you take care of your people, they will take care of the business.

Here are 10 tips leaders and orgs can do to set their people up for success:

1) Trust your people, especially your subject experts: 
Sure, trust grows over time and people can lose your trust. But if you don’t trust your people, why do you hire and employ them?

2) Don’t let internal politics get in the way of making sound business decisions:
For example, if the right thing is to bring certain people into critical meetings, don’t say they “haven’t been there long enough” or they “don’t have the right job title.”

3) Promote based on merit: 
It doesn’t matter what someone looks like, what accent they speak with, or how long they have worked. The best business results occur when star performers are promoted and retained.

4) Compensate adequately: 
Pay your star performers above the market median rates, and benchmark your team to market salary rates and performance bonuses. Trying to “save money” by paying below market will lead to high turnover and poor work culture.

5) Provide good health benefits: 
For orgs who pay low wages and provide medical benefits with high costs, how do you expect employees to pay for expensive medical issues?

6) Provide good retirement benefits: 
Most orgs in the US provide retirement benefits like a 401K with a company match. The average match is 100% for up to 4.8% of your salary. Half of orgs have immediate vesting (phased vesting schedules have no impact to employee retention). Don't be at a competitive disadvantage.

7) Keep your promises: 
Few things anger new employees more than not following through on promises made to them during interviews. No one likes a bait and switch.

8) Praise publicly, coach privately: 
Do this and you’ll earn respect. Do the opposite and you’ll lose respect. With respect comes performance.

9) Provide learning opportunities: 
Support efforts like paying for educational opportunities, obtaining certifications, and attending professional or industry events.

10) Show people every day that you care: 
Actions speak louder than words. If you genuinely care about your people and show it in actions each day, your people will work harder and perform better.
