[ An open letter to marketers and business owners ]

Marketing isn’t about chasing trends.

It’s about understanding the world you operate in.

We need to approach marketing not as a reactive game, but as a strategic discipline — one that prioritizes analysis, insight, and sustainable growth over short-term hacks.

The best marketers and business owners don’t ask: “What’s the next big thing?”

They ask: “What unique opportunities are hidden in my market, my competitors, and my own business?” — and then they build a strategy to leverage them.

It’s not about following the noise. It’s about seeing what others overlook.

We need to reject marketing that’s built on blind imitation and instead embrace a foundation of critical thinking — where decisions are driven by deep research, competitive intelligence, and a clear vision.

Sometimes that means bold positioning. Sometimes it means refining what’s already working. But it always means staying one step ahead, not just keeping up.

At the end of the day, what binds us together is a simple goal:

Gain a sustainable competitive advantage — not by chasing trends, but by mastering the fundamentals.

Wij marketeers pakken marketing vaak helemaal verkeerd aan.

We gaan namelijk vaak direct over tot nieuwe uitingen, kanalen, graphics, kleurtjes en dat soort dingen.

En ondertussen vergeten we kritieke stappen die wél nodig zijn, maar íedereen overslaat: onderzoek & analyse. 

Zonder goed zicht op je organisatie, klant en markt heeft het namelijk helemaal geen zin om een nieuwe "social media strategie" op te tuigen. Je moet weten waar jouw duurzaam concurrentievoordeel zit. Waar de pijn en behoefte van de klant zit (en ja, dat zul je toch echt moeten gaan vragen, niet invullen op aannames) en hoe jouw product of dienst daar in kan voorzien.

Doe je dat niet, sta je te roepen in een lege ruimte. 

Geen idee waar je moet beginnen? Bel dan eens 3 klanten op en stel ze drie vragen:
1. Waarom koop je bij ons?
2. Wat kunnen we beter doen?
3. Wat zijn momenteel hot topics in jouw sector?

Dat geeft je direct inzicht in je klant, markt en eigen organisatie.

Ik ben al een tijd fan van NotebookLM en met name de video-overvier functie.

Als je dat combineert met een deep-search prompt over welk onderwerp dan ook, heb je binnen no-time een toffe keynote van 6- 7 minuten.

Laat het nu ook zo zijn dat ik een fascinatie heb voor bekende én onbekende boardroom-blunders en successen dat ik dacht; laat ik dat eens combineren in een Youtube-kanaal.

Nokia is nog zo'n mooi voorbeeld van strategisch de boot missen.

Om te zeggen dat de iPhone Nokia de das om heeft gedaan is te kort door de bocht. Het is niet zo dat ze Apple misten, ze weigerde te kijken. Nokia bleef geloven in hardware (toetsenbord, batterijduur), terwijl Apple en Android complete ecosystemen bouwden. Dat is negeren van de marktanalyse ten top.

Als je je vasthoudt aan hetgeen wat altijd werkte in plaats van de analyseren wat de toekomst vereist, wordt je vervangbaar. Een commodity.
