Greetings. I lead a marketing team called Choobub Creatives. Our core strength lies in content marketing, especially on LinkedIn. We build brands for individuals and companies to elevate their presence and thought leadership in a specific industry to generate warm leads.

Our role changes depending on the marketing needs. While we can be an outsourced team, we also conduct training for in-house marketing teams. We work with internal teams to be up-to-date with the latest marketing trends.

Alternatively, we work closely with companies for online and offline marketing campaigns. We curate and craft content to create brand awareness for more business opportunities.

Some interesting facts about me:

1. I'm a doctor by profession. However, I moved into marketing because I wanted more time with my family.

2. I enjoy writing stories. I write almost daily on LinkedIn.

3. I'm an avid gamer, especially strategy and role-playing games. I started gaming in the Atari days.

4. I built my brand on LinkedIn, wearing shorts and slippers.

5. I run away from cockroaches.

I looked like a nerd.

But okay lah, she wants me.

This image of Grace and me has been on the net for decades already. It's still on my old blog called TWOT. If you Google "TWOT Wordpress", you'll likely stumble upon my old writings.

TWOT stands for total waste of time. As counterintuitive as it sounds, I find joy in doing meaningless stuff, like writing about my days and thoughts. And today, it's about Grace telling me, "You can stop giving me money already."

Somewhat mixed feelings, really.

As some of you may know, Grace returned to the workforce not too long ago. She was a doctor previously, but decided to quit her job and be a stay-at-home mom for years. Like many moms, she sacrificed her career and her life for our family, especially for the kids.

Without fail, she would keep the home in tip-top condition day and night without complaints. Except for one night, she told me she felt she had no achievements in life.

Looking at how she raised the kids and took care of me, it's not true. However, that's what she felt. So, do-or-die, I had to find ways to get Grace back on her feet. Otherwise, it's going to spiral downhill, and my wife would lose the light in her eyes.

Being past 40, it's not easy to get a job. Thankfully, Big Boss' favour was on her, and she got to treat patients again, teach medical students and even landed a role in HR in the Air-BNB industry. Got to give some credit to her suami, too, lah, for encouraging her to do something outside of healthcare like me, and she took the challenge.

Like, yeah. Got three jobs to do now. Grace is out of the home more than I am now. While I do miss her presence at home, accompanying me through the day, she deserves to have her life back.

Hence, the mixed feelings.

But of course, a massive sense of relief for my shoulders. I used to give part of what I earn to Grace. After all, we're in this together. What I have is hers, and what's hers is hers. That's the golden rule for a happy marriage.

Jokes aside, yeah. This nerd is definitely grateful to have his wife back, locked and loaded with confidence.

Eric Siew

Being the eldest is never easy.

But I don't have a choice.

God said I had to come out first. So, I got pushed out from the ketat punya opening and landed in this world ahead of my brothers.

Expectations weigh heavily on my shoulders. As the oldest, I'm an "example" to my siblings. Behaviour must be good, because I'm the eldest. Call Uncle, call Aunty, because I'm the eldest. Exams must get A's, because I'm the eldest.

However, the "stress" meleleh down to my brothers as well. They have a set of standards to meet. One of my brothers got PTSD-ed to the point that he felt he was never good enough. But the truth is, he's way more successful than his older brother is today. Yet, the scar remains.

I'm also the anchor in many ways.

While my brothers are around the world, the UK, AUS & HK, decision-making is ultimately in my hands when it involves the family. My parents would say, "Ask your brother" when it comes to the final decision.

Go to Bangkok for a holiday? Ask your brother.

Kukujiao got pain? Ask your brother.

Is this medicine okay? Ask your brother.

I can sway family decisions because I'm the eldest. But I'm also the quietest in my family. That comes as a surprise to my brothers, who know I'm out here kacau'ing others and building a community, even though I'm totally the opposite of what they thought I was.

Truth is, being the oldest at home had also taught me how to lead. Not perfect, but comfortable enough to understand people and make the appropriate decisions.

Do what after resigning?

You only look forward.

Life isn't a bed of roses. But if it is, dah mati kot. My last working day was 13 October 2022. So, that marks my third year. Thinking back, I didn't have the confidence to say that I would make it this far.

All my life, I was brought up with the mindset of having a stable job. Get a good salary, family, and be done with life. That got wired deep in me that I had trouble overcoming it. The only thing I have now is my family, and I'm not done with life.

Those who took the plunge earlier, having tasted the "freedom" in the last three years, I can understand why they don't turn back.

Well, we can. But there's a high chance we'll leave again.

The time we gain, the flexibility in doing things we want, and not getting stuck in floods, it's the freedom we gain from excising ourselves from the rat race.

Of course, we have our struggles. We all do. I still worry about not having enough tomorrow. Even if you have much money in your bank account, you pun susah jugak. That's life and its challenges, and without it, we dah mati kot from the inside. Yet, God made it clear that we work on it today, and let Him set the tone for tomorrow.

And compared to many, I'm young. Even in my new circle of friends, many of whom I could easily call uncles and aunties. There's so much more to learn after I resigned. Weird, but true. 

In employment, a company locks us in with a JD. You can't deviate from it. You do the same old stuff, again and again. With an increment, we tahan and do it again and again.

Until when?

I don't know, because we all live unique lives despite similarities.

I had had enough, but my "enough" may not be your threshold. Gone are the days when people stayed in their jobs a lifetime. As today's trend shows, companies don't even want to keep you forever.

So, here I am. Still figuring out the next best course of action, and trying my best to live my God-given day to the fullest each day. Each day itself is a blessing in disguise.

Not RM10, but RM10 million.

That's the fine you can get.

Plus 10 years of jail, or both, but only if you're a "finfluencer" (finance + influencer) and you talk about finance without registering with the Securities Commission (SC).

That's a gila babi mahal fine to pay. Even if you have a financial background, but you did not register with the SC, you will still kena fine. So, have to be extra careful when sharing financial "advices" online.

Then why not other industries?

The reason the gomen does this is that money advices taken in the wrong context has caused many to lose their savings and destroyed their livelihood.

Sometimes, it's the case ketam mengajar anaknya berjalan lurus. The crab teaches its kids to walk straight, in a direct translation. Some may not have proper qualifications, but people won't know. But because of the influence the influencers have, people "trust" them in some ways.

Oddly enough, that's how social media works. The more frequently we pop up on someone's mobile screen, the more "trust" we gain. I put the word trust in air quotes because this isn't genuine trust compared to knowing the person in real life.

As consumers of content, we should approach everything with a critical eye. Verify what you read, including what's coming from me. There are times when I can sound convincing, but I'm just pulling your leg. I'm no influencer. Yet, there's a probability I can sway you with my words.

And if I can do that, what's more, influencers who have far wider reach and following. They can get you to do things, subconsciously.

So, always think twice and verify before following someone's advice online. Unless you know that person personally, take their words with secubit garam.

I'm going to keep this short today.

We're going to makan.

I asked the MKK community if they wanted to gather for a year-end makan session. They voted, so I organised.

I understand it's year-end. Hence, I planned to have a small one with 30 people. But see, see, 42 orangs are coming.

And, as with all gathering sessions, I would allocate some space for those who want to meet the community. If you are keen to meet them, we welcome you with open arms.

To makan or not to makan?

My name's Eric.

I'll share the bad things about me.

I'm a guy whose sarcastic remarks know no boundaries, only to be told off by his wife, Grace, that this isn't the right thing to do.

I judge people fast, at blazing speeds. It's a job hazard, unfortunately. Mainly to safeguard myself from harm from mixing with the wrong crowd. There are several pretentious people on LinkedIn, too, and it could be one of your favourite creators.

How one writes, comments, and the self-righteous posts about I, me and myself sets my alarm off. Coupled with testimonials about how the person in real life is different from their online persona, reinforces my judgment. And that isn't good, of course.

I'm also allergic to transactional people. You can smell their intention miles away. Again, job hazard lah sebab I've seen one too many.

Yet, my judgment isn't always proper. I'm also learning to give others a second chance. Otherwise, I wouldn't have met Aunty Prema. She could have just stayed as a "pending connection" on my list forever.

Also, I say things as they are. While some appreciate the truth, not all can telan it. As they say, truth hurts. As a result, it shows how cold-hearted I am at times.

The ones close and used to me, they're okay. Just that I apply to close and not-close alike, and I'll hurt some feelings along the way. This one I'm not so panai to filter.

And the most critical point of all, I take notice of all the little gestures a person makes on encounter.

The smirk on the face, rolling of the eyes, uneasy body language and all. If it happens, I ponder upon it for an ultra-long time, wondering what I did wrong. The self-assessment paralyses me. You may not even notice you did it, but I do. It's not healthy, I know, but my wires operate that way.

So, yeah.

If you see me for the first time in future, do excuse my flaws, kasi lah chans skit. I'm trying to be a better version of myself.

You can up your numbers.

But the first rule is not to copy.

We are on LinkedIn because we want others to see us, one way or another. Yet, when we put our post out, the impressions can get demoralising.

We'll blame LinkedIn's algorithm, and that's fine. It keeps changing, so we can't keep up. But the question here is whether we can't keep up, or whether we don't want to change?

One of the biggest challenges when we post on LinkedIn is that we get comfortable with ourselves. So comfortable that we become an OTP. It's not a One-Time Password, but a One Trick Pony. We do the same pattern daily, expecting results, and Einstein calls it insanity.

And when all else fails, we copy others. Just like our famous white-haired friend, who openly says he copied me. But the truth is, he didn't. He ended up in the LinkedIn isolation facility and got locked out a few times because of his mischievous behaviour. That works for him, but it doesn't mean it'll work for us.

Each of us has our own style. You have to find it and make it work to your advantage. I've been writing on LinkedIn long enough to know what works and what doesn't. While good content is a must, there are many other areas to look into.

Unfortunately, people give up too fast and too furiously when they don't see the numbers. So here, I'm showing you the numbers that it's doable. And you can achieve it in two (2) weeks if you have the right recipe.

Eh, so what's the recipe?

Oh, it comes with a cost. And it's not going to be cheap. I have plans for building the MKK community the following year, and all things require moolah.

You want the numbers? Can.

You want others to see you? Can.

You want influence? Can.

Can, can, and can, with a price.

Just social media?

It should be mobile devices, too.

I'm not sure about you, but I'm sick and tired of looking at families glued to their phones. If you're having a meal outside and have a proper conversation, I can only imagine what goes on at home.

And the truth is, even the senior ones got hooked. I remember the days when my parents would nag me about being at the computer for far too long. Eh, i486 took a long while to load, and a 56k dial-up modem takes an eternity to connect.

Now, the senior ones pun ter-hook. They spend hours on their mobile devices, which has replaced activity and socialising with others. It's like living like a hermit.

Many times, I would see parents watching videos with one hand while pushing a child in a stroller. To make matters worse, the child has a pad in his hands, too. I don't know what's going to happen to society in future. Many likely lack the skills to communicate, let alone understand one another.

Some people going down the escalator also want to watch K-drama. You pokai edy then baru tau. Common sense is not so common these days.

While we welcome the move to restrict social media for children under 16, the onus falls on us, as adults, to supervise our kids. Bukan nya let the gomen take over our roles and we lepas tangan.

Then again, if we adults are the role models for our children and we're setting a bad example, it's a vicious cycle that never ends. If we look at the number of hours we spend on social media, we laugh. We laugh because we know we're part of the problem.

Instead of just enforcing bans, educating the public about the detrimental effects of social media would safeguard people. We're in a deep hole, and if it gets any deeper, no light can save us.

And as parents, we should watch over our kids. Otherwise, social media's going to watch over them, and the results are going to disappoint you.

I know one guy here who fans the fire from 8 AM to 10 PM daily, without fail. If you know, you know.

I gave out many MCs in my career.

But if not sick, how to give?

Can, but it's out of compassion. At times, we need the rest. Some workplace completely drain their employees. They look exhausted, on the brink of breaking down. Coming through the door, the muka so kesian I give.

MC stands for medical certificate.

However, that is if only YOU are the patient. There was a recent uproar about parents not getting MCs because their child is sick. As doctors, many would like to help. I'm saying many because not all doctors are compassionate, either. Yet, they have a law to abide by, and they can't give you unless you're a patient yourself.

It's not the doctor's fault, but it's how companies generally run in Malaysia. Having worked in MY & SG, there are systems in place that we can emulate from our Singaporean brethren.

One, there's the option of "Sick without MC". You can call in sick without visiting the doctor to get an MC. Limited use, but it's there to cover for minor illnesses like cough and flu.

Two, there's "Child Care Leave". This one was an excellent bonus for working parents with kids. You get 6 per year. Your boss pays you for 3 days, and the SG government pays you for the other 3 days.

Three, we call it "Compassionate Leave". As the word suggests, we give the leave because we "feel" you. Out of concern, your boss lets you off to take care of your parents, your well-being, or even your kucing.

If the above are in place, people would generally feel cared for. But in Malaysia, if you get these benefits from your company, you can siew ha-ha already. It's still not the best, but it works.

The best?

Be jobless like me, and do your own thing. You'll never have to worry about MCs anymore. When kids are sick, we don't have to worry about applying for leave.

While doctors can be compassionate and issue you MCs based on your current condition, don't go over and "keng" MCs. Working in SG gave me the ability to look at a face and tell whether it's a 1-day MC, a 2-day MC, or sometimes a 3.

I had National Service men coming in, rubbing toothpaste in their eyes, holding crutches they didn't need, putting hot water in their mouths before a temperature check, complaining of watery diarrhoea, only to have a finger prodded up their peaches to see that it was dry like a desert.

I still gave the MC out of compassion and to applaud their efforts. But because, as a doctor in SG, I was ranked "Captain". So, I had them do push-ups in front of me before I showed them compassion.

How many days of MC do you have?

Long story short, doctors can only give you an MC if you're the patient in Malaysia. There is still a lot of room for improvement in how we care for our workforce's well-being, and it's not the doctor's job alone.

We're making headlines again.

Or at least close to.

While consensus on Thread believes that the tourists in the image shown were either Malaysians or Singaporeans, we won't know. But what we know is that a Malaysian complained that Japanese people do not want to confront the behaviour, but instead post about it on social media.

The issue arose when a group of tourists "annoyed" some Japanese on a JR train. As you can see from the photo, the carriage was full. Yet a bag occupied a seat, and the stroller was blocking the alley.

Looking at it from a neutral perspective, both sides pun not ngam. And it has nothing to do with any nationality.

One, don't simply take people's pictures and put them up in negative light. It's an invasion of privacy. Plus, all their faces are publicly revealed, including the child's. Worse, they were unaware of it. Even if you want to use it, blur out the faces first to highlight the incident.

We take public shaming and bashing too far these days. Who has not sinned in their lives before? Would you like others to bring you up on social media for the mistakes you made, knowingly or unknowingly?

You won't want it, and neither do I.

So, rather than humiliate, take the chance to educate.

Two, we also have to be sensitive to our surroundings. Some of us, for the lack of a better word, are ignorant. We lack insight and awareness about our behaviours. As a result, we inconvenience others.

If your ketiak berbau and body odour is at a 200% penetration rate, sterilise your armpits before you head out. Please do something about it, anything.

And in this case, it's already a train full of passengers packed to the brim. Move your bag aside, fold your stroller, and have the child sit in the seat or on your lap. Pandai-pandai lah, be empathetic about your surroundings. Plus, you're entering other people's country, so learn about their culture and practices before you set foot in it.

Imagine having a Westerner walking into an Asian home with his shoes on, I'm sure you'll throw durians at him. The same goes for us. We need to know about others and their practices.
