Since my girls were little I’ve told them they rock. I’ve told them they are beautiful. I’ve told them they are smart. Ive reassured them they will be successful. I’ve told them they are worthy. I’ve told them they deserved to be loved. I’ve told them they deserve to be protected. 

Why? 

Because society tells us they are not attractive. They are not smart. They are not worthy. They are unloveable. They don’t deserve to be protected.

Black women are 4x more likely to die in during child birth than white women. 

Black women experience domestic violence at rates higher than any other race. 

Black women are 80% more likely to change their hair in the workplace to fit in the social norms because of discrimination in the workplace. 

Black girls are disproportionately disciplined at school compared to their white peers. They are more likely to face exclusion and expulsion. 

Black women face higher rates of certain health conditions, including obesity, hypertension, and breast cancer. They also have lower rates of health insurance coverage compared to white women.

So, before anyone fixes their fingers to start typing about why have featured only Black women (nearly) 70 Black women in the next edition of the Black Business Magazine which is out next week Friday. Please refer back to this post and think whether you want to be ‘that person’.

I am Tru Powell and I help creative entrepreneurs build and monetise their personal brands. It's incredibly important for every entrepreneur and business leader to be visible by using the power of press and PR. My motto is if you are not visible, you are invisible. I use my proven blueprint over a series of programmes and mentoring schemes to power up personal brands.

I am the CEO of the Multicultural Business & Community Champion Awards (MBCC Awards), a company that sets out to celebrate unsung heroes and champion diversity in the UK. The prestigious ceremony welcomes a staggering 800 and is growing year on year. As CEO, I am responsible for the company's growth and the entire operation. 

I am also the CEO of the Black Business Magazine, the UK's premium online and print publication for Black business. The magazine as been created to uplift and empower the Black community. 

I am also one third of the Directorship for Aston Performing Arts Academy, a community interest organisation that exists to empower young people through performing and creative arts. Since the organisation's inception in 2004, the company has impacted the lives of over 3000 young people in the Midlands. 

I am passionate about championing the cause of equality, justice and freedom of speech. I believe there should be a true representation of all communities irrespective of race, gender, religion, sexuality, age or class. More recently, I have been doing a lot of work around race relations, specifically being anti racist.

A little story… 

Yesterday I witnessed both Jada Haughton- White and Nathan tie the knot. 

Jada and Nathan began their love story at Aston Performing Arts Academy many years ago as both were members. 

Outside of APAA, Jada became my right hand at the MBCC Awards for many years. 

Nathan headed up the music at many of the events and projects I’ve been involved in. 

Both have great careers and become incredible people together. 

This is the 5th APAA wedding - by that I mean people who have met in APAA and decided to build a life together. 

I love them both so much and will always be there for them. 

The wedding was beautiful. 

There were many members from APAA who all couldn’t stop telling Pelego and I how important APAA was to them in their lives. 

APAA was so much more than a performing arts academy. We changed young people’s lives. 

My heart is full.
