That's me after a night of trying to figure out if an AI-generated business requirement was grounded in reality. Looked very solid from first glance. Then I read it carefully. 

The whole thing addressed an imaginary need. Covered scenarios that made no sense for this business. Building it would have wasted time and left the real problem untouched.

We expect AI to think independently and suggest perfect solutions. Make work easy. But it doesn't work that way.

AI makes DIFFERENT work easier. The grunt work. The repetitive tasks. The synthetic data generation for testing. The template emails.

But feeding AI the right context? That takes real skill.

I've spent a lot of time building systems. Started experimenting with AI tools 3 years ago. Subscribed to newsletters, joined Telegram channels, cycled through dozens of tools.

What I learned:

⚡ Context is expensive
You need to understand prompt engineering. Good prompts require domain knowledge. No shortcuts.

📊 Knowledge gaps shrink fast  
"I don't know" is a weak excuse now. Research takes minutes, not days. Your clients expect better.

🔍 Judgment becomes premium
When everyone has access to the same information, how you think separates you from the pack.

🤝 Soft skills matter more
Reading the room. Understanding your client's constraints. Knowing when copy-paste breaks everything.

🧠 Multi-angle thinking wins
The ability to assess needs, challenges, and constraints from different perspectives? That's where value lives.

Here's what we did at my agency:

Started with problems, not tools. Identified bottlenecks in business analysis, project management, QA, reporting. Then found the tools that solved specific issues.

Led by example. Used AI for my own work first. Refined emails. Built UI prototypes. Generated Excel formulas. Showed the team real wins before asking them to adopt.

The result? My team now handles complex integrations that used to require senior resources. They coach clients confidently. They research faster. They deliver better.

But none of this happened because AI made things "easier."

It happened because we invested time in learning how to use these tools properly.

AI eliminated the fake busywork. That freed up capacity for thinking. For judgment. For the work that actually moves the needle.

When everyone can access information, your value isn't what you know. It's how quickly you can learn new things and what you do with what you know.

If you think conversational commerce isn't real, you're wrong.
The terminology confuses everyone. We may think the entire transaction has to happen in chat form. It doesn't have to.

I start 90% of my meaningful purchases with ChatGPT or Perplexity.

My wife does the same. So do my friends. We're not alone.

61% of consumers already use ChatGPT or Gemini to shop online, according to Bloomreach. That's not a trend. That's the present.

People keep looking for transactions happening inside the chatbot interface. They're missing the point.

• Conversational commerce doesn't mean buying inside the chat
• It means using chat to research, compare, and decide
• We follow links from AI answers and complete purchases
• The conversation IS the commerce pathway

Look at the numbers:

→ 700 million people use ChatGPT weekly
→ 57% have used AI shopping assistants in the past 6-9 months
→ The conversational commerce market hit $8.8 billion in 2025
→ Shoppers who use AI chat spend 25% more than those who don't

When I need running shoes, I ask ChatGPT. When I compare software tools, I ask Perplexity. When I research electronics, I start with AI.

Sometimes I buy through the links provided. Sometimes I go direct. But the buying decision? That happened in the conversation.

This isn't the future. This is today.

Companies denying this shift are the same ones who dismissed mobile commerce in 2010. They said people wouldn't shop on phones.

They were wrong then. They're wrong now.

Consumer behavior has changed. The question isn't whether conversational commerce exists. The question is whether your business is ready for it.

Because your customers are already there. With or without you.

That's the skill you're paying for.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁:
→ UI/UX overhaul across desktop and mobile
→ SEO implications for new page structures
→ Data architecture redesign
→ Rework of PIM integration and data sync
→ Possible third-party search engine implementation
→ Extended QA cycle
→ Budget increase
→ Timeline extension

And the problem on top of that? The SaaS platform they are using doesn't support either request out of the box.

This is what keeps me up at night as a solutions architect.

Not the technical complexity. That part I love solving.

What challenges me is the invisible web of downstream effects.

Fix one thing, and three others break. Improve one experience, and another persona suffers. Build an elegant UX, and the technical implementation becomes a nightmare.

Or the opposite. Create a technically brilliant solution that no human wants to use.

𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝗜'𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿:

• One persona's improvement becomes another persona's frustration
• Beautiful UX designs that require rebuilding the entire backend
• Mobile experiences that get forgotten in desktop-first thinking
• Data changes that cascade through every integration point
• Performance optimizations that break core functionality

The job is not to build what the client asks for.

The job is to think through what happens after we build it.

Budget impact. Timeline shifts. Risk factors. Training needs. Documentation requirements. Integration points. Change management. Stakeholder alignment.

Every positive change in one area creates ripples everywhere else.

This is where experience matters. Pattern recognition. The ability to see around corners before we hit the wall.

When someone brings me a "simple request" these days, my first thought is always the same:

What am I not seeing yet?

Because in close to 20 years of building digital solutions, I've learned this truth over and over again:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲.

The downstream impact is where projects succeed or fail.

And the ability to map that complexity before committing resources? That's what separates a working solution from one that works well for everyone involved.

Great solutions don't just solve the immediate problem.

They account for what happens three steps down the line.

What's common between B2B digital transformation and a family deciding where to eat dinner? 
Everyone has to approve the decision, nobody can agree on what they want, it takes three times longer than it should, and by the time you finally commit, half the group has changed their mind about what they're hungry for.

Back when I was still sitting with the developers (they ran out of seats in IT, so I ended up with marketing), I learned something critical.

Technical people and business people speak different languages.

Same words. Completely different meanings.

WHAT GOOD ANALOGIES DO FOR YOU:

→ Bridge the knowledge gap fast
→ Get buy-in from non-technical stakeholders
→ Make complex ideas stick in people's minds
→ Speed up decision-making by 10x

I work in digital transformation. Most of my clients come from manufacturing, distribution, operations, and finance.

They don't speak "API" or "headless architecture."

But they DO understand:
• Supply chain bottlenecks
• Warehouse logistics
• Order routing decisions

So instead of explaining microservices architecture, I talk about how their ERP routes orders to different warehouses based on inventory and customer rules.

Same concept. Their language.

We even turned this into a friendly competition inside our team and with partners.

Who could come up with the best analogy for explaining technical concepts?

Some were hilarious. Some were brilliant. Most were both.

THE REAL LESSON HERE:

The biggest risk in any project isn't technical complexity.

It's misalignment and poor communication.

I've seen technically gifted teams fail because they couldn't translate their work into business value.

And I've seen average technical solutions succeed because everyone understood what they were building and why.

Your ability to empathize with clients and partners matters more than you think.

When you explain things in their terms, using their examples, referencing their world, magic happens:
• Trust builds faster
• Decisions get made quicker
• Projects stay aligned
• Everyone feels heard

I've made this my superpower.

Understanding the business context first, then finding the right technical solution.

Not the other way around.

The devil is in the details.
We all know this. We all forget it when it matters most.

Just the other day, one of our business analysts came to me with what seemed like a straightforward client request.

The client wanted us to disable access to protected content for customers who haven't been active with them for a while. 

Sounds logical, right?

The client felt confident about it. "Let's just do it. What's so difficult?"

This is one reason I'm not worried about my job being replaced by AI for the next couple of years.

AI executes clear, well-defined tasks brilliantly. But what about tasks that only seem clear?

We often think we're giving precise instructions. But most of the time we're not. 

This is where a good business analyst or solutions architect adds value. By spotting the hidden complexity. This mindset saves real money. Sometimes millions of dollars.

We started picking this request apart.
→ How do you define a client? One person or the entire company?
→ How do you define "not doing business"? Someone who hasn't logged in for a while? Or placed an order? What about quote requests?
→ How long does the customer need to be inactive?
→ What if one person in the organization still orders from time to time?
→ Do we completely cut their access? Send a message? Display a warning?
→ Won't hiding spec sheets impact potential customers doing online research before buying?

Won't we throw out the baby with the bathwater?

Lots of questions.

Then our business analyst went back to the client to find out more. To come up with details and a preferred user experience. 

Because sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

This is what I call devils in the details.

Seemingly small tasks become extremely complex once you start reviewing all those different issues, questions, and concerns.

Most people miss this step. They take the request at face value. They build what was asked for. Then they rebuild when it doesn't work.

That's where the money gets burned.

A good solutions architect asks questions. Challenges assumptions. Pushes back when something doesn't make sense.

Not to be difficult. To protect the client from themselves. 

To make sure we're solving the right problem. Not just executing a task.

The lesson?

Understanding the real problem matters more than quick execution. Building the wrong solution fast is worthless. 

The devil is hiding somewhere in there. Find him before you start building.

I've been doing this for close to 20 years. I've seen brilliant technical teams fail because they didn't ask enough questions.

But I've also seen projects succeed. Projects that saved millions. Projects where we found the real problem hiding behind the stated request.

All because someone asked, "Wait. What exactly do you mean by that?"

Google Just Killed the 10-Blue-Link Model. And Your Clicks Are Next.
That's not me talking. That's Neil Patel.

And he's right. Most businesses still optimize for clicks.

But this strategy is a thing of the past.

Neil said it plainly: "If your strategy still relies on clicks from 10 blue links, you're optimizing for a search engine that no longer exists."

The more Google shifts from keyword-based ads to conversational AI responses, the more your visibility will depend on being part of the answer.

Not next to the answer. Not below the answer. Part OF the answer.

Companies spend thousands on SEO to drive traffic. But when someone asks Google a question in your space, it answers using information from multiple sources.

Your listing becomes invisible. Your traffic drops. Your investment goes nowhere.

The companies winning right now? They structure their data so AI systems understand it. They publish content that answers real questions. They make their expertise accessible both to humans and machines.

This is not a small shift. This changes how people find you.

Your service pages need structured data. Your expertise needs clear documentation. Your content needs proper formatting.

If AI systems cannot read your information, you're invisible.
