Leadership Without Attachment: Act Fully, Stay Free

Leadership wisdom inspired by Jaya Row & Bhagavad Gita – Chapter 5

Leadership is not about withdrawing from the world, it is about engaging deeply without being trapped by outcomes. 

The Bhagavad Gita offers a powerful inner map for leaders who want to perform at their best while remaining grounded, clear, and free.

The Inner States of Leadership : 

Just like the fisherman’s net catches different kinds of fish, leaders too operate from different inner states:

The Bhogi Leader : 

Driven by results, recognition, and comfort. Appears successful but is inwardly restless, anxious, and dependent on approval. Comfortable in the “net” of ego and outcomes.


The Yogi Leader : 

Begins to reflect. Learns from challenges. Takes responsibility instead of blaming people or circumstances. Focuses on self-mastery and inner growth while still delivering results.


The Sannyasi Leader : 

Has largely shed ego-driven desires. Neither craves praise nor fears criticism. Remains steady in success and failure, clarity and chaos. Leads with calm authority.


The Jnani Leader: 

The rarest. Fully active, highly effective, yet inwardly free. Leads from awareness, not anxiety. Acts decisively, yet remains untouched by outcomes. Such leaders inspire trust, wisdom, and deep respect.

Action Is Non-Negotiable : 

Krishna is unequivocal: action is the foundation of leadership.

Reflection and mindfulness without action are incomplete.

Leadership maturity grows through Karma Yoga, acting with excellence while letting go of personal attachment to results.

	•	Give your best thinking.
	•	Make courageous decisions.
	•	Lead with commitment and integrity.
	•	Then release the need to control outcomes.

This is renunciation in action, not renunciation of action.

Responsibility Creates Clarity : 

When teams struggle or plans fail, the yogi  leader does not blame:
	•	the market
	•	the team
	•	the system

Instead, they ask:

“What could I have done differently?”
“What is required of me now?”

The moment responsibility is accepted:
	•	agitation reduces
	•	clarity emerges
	•	creativity flows
	•	solutions appear

This inner shift transforms managers into charismatic leaders.

Detachment Is Not Disengagement : 

True detachment does not mean lack of ambition or enjoyment.
It means freedom from ego-driven desire.

A leader can:
	•	hold power like King Janaka
	•	or simplicity like Sudama

Both can be equally effective and inwardly renounced. What matters is not what you possess, but what possesses you.

The Highest Leadership Insight : 

A mature leader lives like a lotus leaf on water fully involved, yet untouched.
	•	Engaged, but not entangled
	•	Ambitious, but not anxious
	•	Successful, yet not dependent on success

You don’t need to reject achievement or pleasure in leadership.

Acquire. Enjoy. Experience. Yet remain unattached.

Training the Mind: Eight Simple Lessons for a Compassionate Life

In the search for a meaningful life rooted in love and wisdom, few teachings are as practical as training the mind. 

One of the most respected guides in Tibetan Buddhism is “The Eight Verses for Training the Mind,” written by the 11th-century master Langri Tangpa. 

These verses show us how everyday life itself can become a path of compassion and clarity.

Here is their essence : 

1. All beings are precious : 

If our deepest wish is inner awakening, then every person we meet becomes important. Through others, we learn patience, kindness, and humility. They are our greatest teachers.

2. Practice humility, not self-neglect : 

Seeing others as more important than ourselves is not about putting ourselves down. It is about softening the ego so genuine connection and compassion can grow. Often, people’s anger hides their suffering.

3. Watch the mind carefully :

In every action, observe your thoughts and emotions. When anger, jealousy, or pride arise, notice them and gently stop them from taking control. Awareness is the heart of mind training.

4. Difficult people are hidden treasures : 

It is easy to love those who are kind. Real compassion is tested when we meet people who are negative or difficult. If we can respond with patience, we grow deeply.

5. Let go of the need to win :

When treated unfairly or insulted, the teaching is to release the ego’s need for victory. This is not weakness—it is inner strength. Letting go creates peace.

6. Learn even from betrayal : 

When someone we have helped hurts us, the pain reveals our attachments and expectations. If we stay open instead of closing our hearts, we develop resilience and wisdom.

7. Give happiness, take suffering : 

This verse reflects the practice of tonglen: silently wishing to take away others’ pain and offering them joy and relief. It strengthens unconditional compassion.

8. See life with wisdom : 

All things are impermanent and interconnected. When we stop clinging to them as fixed or solid, we become freer—and act with greater clarity and kindness.

Together, these eight verses offer a complete path: from compassion to wisdom. They do not ask us to escape life, but to engage with it fully and openly. Every challenge becomes a lesson. Every person becomes a possible teacher.

As shared by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama to Rajiv Mehrotra, these verses remind us that the real spiritual work is the transformation of the mind - from confusion to clarity, and from selfishness to love.

Self-confidence in leadership is often mistaken for authority, certainty, or having all the answers. In reality, authentic leadership confidence is quieter, deeper, and far more sustainable. It is rooted in self-awareness, clarity of purpose, and the courage to act even in uncertainty.


1. Self-Awareness Is the Foundation : 

Leadership confidence begins with knowing yourself, your strengths, limitations, values, and emotional triggers. When leaders are self-aware, they rely less on external approval and more on inner clarity.

When you are grounded in who you are, you no longer need to prove yourself.

2. Confidence Comes from Purpose, Not Position : 

Titles may grant authority, but purpose gives confidence. Leaders who are clear about why they lead and who they serve remain steady even amid challenges, criticism, or failure.

Purpose acts as an inner compass, helping leaders move forward with conviction rather than fear.

3. Emotional Mastery Builds Inner Strength : 

Leadership challenges test emotional resilience more than technical skills. 

Confident leaders don’t deny fear or self-doubt, they acknowledge them without being governed by them.

4. Action Precedes Confidence : 

Many leaders wait to feel confident before taking action, confidence follows action.

Each intentional step, making a decision, having a courageous conversation, standing by one’s values, builds self-trust. Over time, this self-trust becomes confidence.

5. Learning Is a Sign of Confidence, Not Weakness : 

Confident leaders are open to feedback. They view mistakes as opportunities for growth rather than threats to identity.

6. Inner Stillness Creates Outer Clarity : 

In constant busyness, leaders often lose connection with their inner centre. Reflection, mindfulness, or quiet contemplation restores clarity.

7. Authenticity Is the Highest Form of Confidence : 

Trying to imitate others weakens confidence. Authentic leaders lead from who they truly are, not who they think they should be.

When leaders accept themselves fully, their presence becomes naturally confident and deeply trustworthy.

Self-confidence in leadership is not about control or certainty. It is about being anchored within yourself—clear in values, steady in emotions, and aligned in action.

The most confident leaders are not the loudest in the room. They are calm, grounded, and quietly influential.

The Algebra of Awakening: Grow by Adding Virtues, Evolve by Letting Go

Human life is shaped by two opposite movements happening within us, some forces help us grow, others weigh us down. Across cultures, these have been described as virtues and vices, light and shadow, ascent and descent.

Sant Shyam Lal Saxena (Babuji Maharaj) offered a simple yet powerful framework for inner growth. 

He taught that human beings are guided by twelve primary inner energies:
	•	Six virtues to consciously nurture
	•	Six vices to consciously release

This is not moral preaching—it is a practical blueprint for inner evolution.

The Six Virtues (Sigma: Addition)

Compassion, humility, forgiveness, truthfulness, love, and charity are expansive forces.

Each act of kindness, truth, or love adds something within us. 

These qualities accumulate, strengthen the soul, and open us to the Divine. Like Sigma (∑) in mathematics, they represent growth, enrichment, and summation.

The Six Vices (Koppa: Subtraction)

Lust, anger, greed, attachment, jealousy, and ego work in the opposite direction.
They do not build, they erode. They drain emotional energy, cloud clarity, and block spiritual perception. 

These are called Koppa qualities, symbolised by an ancient Greek letter that no longer exists—just as these traits must eventually disappear from our inner life.

The Six Sigma – Six Koppa Path : 

Real growth requires both movements together:
	•	Adding what uplifts us
	•	Removing what limits us

Cultivating virtues without cleansing vices makes growth fragile.

Dropping vices without building virtues leaves us empty.

Transformation happens only when addition and subtraction move together.

Spirituality, as Babuji Maharaj reminded us, is not escaping the world, it is engaging with life more consciously. No complex rituals are needed. Every thought, intention, and action is quietly shaping us.


You grow by adding.
You evolve by letting go.
This balance is the algebra of awakening.

Anger Is Not Power, It Is Powerlessness : 

“Anger… it’s a paralysing emotion… you can’t get anything done. People sort of think it’s an interesting, passionate, and igniting feeling — I don’t think it’s any of that — it’s helpless… it’s absence of control.” — Toni Morrison

Anger often disguises itself as strength : 

It feels intense.
It feels charged.
It feels powerful.

But in truth, anger often paralyzes more than it propels.

When we are angry:

	•	Our clarity narrows.
	•	Our judgment weakens.
	•	Our responses become reactions.

Instead of choosing wisely, we become controlled by the emotion itself.

Anger gives the illusion of action, but it actually takes away control. It is not mastery, it is a moment of helplessness.

The Power of Awareness : 

The goal is not to suppress anger — it is to understand it.

When anger arises:

	•	Pause.
	•	Observe.
	•	Breathe.
	•	Create distance between feeling and action.

That pause is power.

In that pause:
	•	Emotion transforms into insight.
	•	Reaction transforms into response.
	•	Helplessness transforms into conscious choice.

The Deeper Truth : 

Anger is often a signal:

	•	Something feels unfair.
	•	A boundary feels crossed.
	•	A fear feels triggered.

When we honour the signal without becoming the storm, we regain control.

True strength is not in explosive expression.
True strength is in composed clarity.

From that clarity, meaningful action becomes possible.

On this sacred night of Mahashivratri, may we pause and return home to ourselves.

Mahashivratri is not just a festival. It is an invitation.

An invitation to silence.

To stillness.

To awakening.

On this night, when the world celebrates Shiva, the destroyer of illusion, the master of meditation, the embodiment of consciousness, we are reminded of a deeper truth. 

Destruction is not negative. It is sacred.

Shiva destroys ego.

Shiva dissolves fear.

Shiva burns ignorance.

And what remains… is clarity.

The story of Mahashivratri speaks of the cosmic dance, the Tandava, where creation and dissolution move together. 

It teaches us that endings are not failures. They are transitions. Just as night gives birth to dawn.

Today, may we:

• Let go of anger that has been weighing us down.

• Release attachments that limit our growth.

• Sit in silence, even if only for a few minutes.

• Remember that strength is found in stillness.

Shiva sits in meditation, yet holds the power of the universe.

Perhaps the greatest leadership lesson lies there.

True power is calm. True authority is inward mastery.

On this Mahashivratri, may we awaken the Shiva within : 

The part of us that is fearless, compassionate, detached, and deeply aware.

May your night be filled with light.

May your heart be filled with peace.

May your life move closer to its highest purpose.
