At Ness, we swung big to compete with AmEx and build the next great credit card company, health-first.

Some highlights:

- Raised $50M in equity + debt from best-in-class early investors like Accomplice, Will Ventures, Portage, Core, and Digitalis.

- Landed best-in-class partnerships with Sweetgreen, Seed Health, Prenuvo, Exhale Spa, GlamSquad, Whole30, & Jonathan Van Ness plus reached a monthly audience of 150K per through an online publication and weekly newsletter.

- Grew a proprietary database of 20K+ healthy merchants across the country, mostly relying on user-generated submissions and machine learning-driven approval.

- Built and led a tremendous fintech & healthcare team (ex-Capital One, AmEx, Mastercard, Wells Fargo, Oscar Health, Cityblock Health) to successfully launch a consumer credit card that rewarded members for healthy spend & activities.

- Developed a credit card platform from scratch, bringing together great partners like Mastercard, The Bank of Missouri, Galileo, Canopy, Alloy, Evervault, & Plaid to create our own credit card stack for flexibility and financial upside.

- Engineered a novel HSA integration, flagging eligible purchases and allowing users to pay them down directly from their HSA account.

- Ultimately, Ness cardmembers spent over $2K/month and achieved 640K healthy actions. Our top 50 cardholders spent $4.8K/month with 40 average monthly transactions. 76% of cardholders said the Ness card led them to make healthier choices.

After almost pivoting into building co-brand B2B2C card with health plans like UHC/Optum, we unfortunately shut the business down in late 2023.

I'm a mission-driven business builder deeply passionate about making health affordable and accessible for everyone.

I previously built Greatist into the largest health & wellness media site on the Internet for millennials (acquired by Healthline/Red Ventures in 2019) and built a health-first credit card company from scratch with Ness (unfortunately shut down in 2023.)

Over the years, I've become a truly full-stack health & healthcare marketer, growing and engaging consumers (or key B2B decision-makers) at scale across almost every channel—all packaged into a builder mindset of a successful 2x startup founder.

The backstory: After two venture-backed startups, I wanted to try something different.

So I started a services business—my first. 

A year ago, we had 4 clients at $50K/month. 

Today, we have 12 clients at $175K/month.

And that’s all from referrals, word-of-mouth, and inbound! 

The reason? Well, the results speak for themselves:

So far, we’ve published 267 long-form content pieces across topics like mental health, primary care, and sleep.

All by in-demand, quality-obsessed, specialized writers.
All medically reviewed by two experts.
All optimized for search, LLMs, and lead-capture.

All with the goal of writing the best answer on the Internet. 

And all by a team aligned on the same mission I’ve chased my whole career: Make health more accessible through truly great content.

Now, it wasn’t all smooth. In March (remember Olivia Nicholl Amelia Edelman Ken Roberts?), I was really worried we weren’t growing. Sales cycles were long. Some companies seemed ready to give up on doing content right (AI slop is tempting). I figured it was worth giving it a few more months. 

But by June, we’d doubled our client base and started turning down work to protect quality and it hasn’t let up since! 

Along the way, we’ve been refining our playbook for organic SEO & GEO-driven growth in health. Every client teaches us something new—and we use those learnings across the portfolio.

The big takeaway is simple:

I advise a lot of health brands that publish fantastic content that’s still not converting. 

Often, that’s because the content doesn't include the right trust signals.

At Healthyish Content, we've learned content needs five non-negotiable elements to build trust:

1. Evidence-based sources and current references: Cite high-quality studies, link to primary sources, and date-stamp content updates. 

2. Clinical review: "Medically reviewed by Dr. Sarah Johnson, MD" beats unvetted content every time. One expert is better than two.

3. Author credentials: People don’t trust uncredited work. Show the writer’s face—bonus points for credentials or experience in the topic. 

4. Tie expertise directly to your brand: Do more than define a condition and describe symptoms. Show how you treat the conditions differently. Tell your patient/customer stories.

5. Clear disclaimers: "This is education, not diagnosis" shows honesty and responsibility.

When combined with optimized CTAs, buttons, content modules, and strategic email capture, these methods move the needle big time for organic traffic.

After we optimized content for our partner Midi Health, they saw a 323% increase in organic traffic—and more importantly, they also saw direct patient conversion from the blog.

So before you worry about buttons and CTAs, get the trust signals right. The conversions will follow—I’ve seen it happen with our partners.

Every week, I send out a newsletter about 5 healthyish things I like/don’t like to 95,000 people. Here’s how it all comes together 👇

1️⃣ Step 1: I’m constantly collecting ideas—questions from my wife, suggestions from the 5HT+ channel, new studies, health trends, or whatever latest longevity experiment Bryan Johnson’s trying.

2️⃣ Step 2: Every Monday, I pick my top 5. When I first started, it was basically just what I wanted to talk about. But as my audience grew, I honed in on what they wanted. Thanks to a reader survey, I now try to include one healthyish hack, one decoded science-y topic, one product rec, and one trendy topic that earns either an approval 👍 or an eye roll 🙄.

3️⃣ Step 3: Tuesday/Wednesday = research and writing. I dig in, draft my honest takes, curate “Neural Signals” based on keyword research, and fill “Brain Snacks” with news from around the web, the 5HT+ Slack, and healthyish friends. Lastly, I collab with ChatGPT to dream up a header image that fits the vibe. (May or may not share some of the more hilarious outtakes one day 😆.)

4️⃣ Step 4: Thursday, I test and polish through beehiiv, then schedule the send for 5:30–6pm ET. Beehiiv swears that’s when my audience is most engaged (with a 65%+ open-rate, who am I to question it?).

5️⃣ Step 5: My favorite part: Reading replies. I loveee hearing readers’ takes—even the disagreements! It often gives me ideas for future editions, too.

Then the cycle starts again. 🔁

PS - Below is an nonexhaustive list of places I’ve found inspo for 5HT. Yeah, I still write with paper and pen! It’s good for the brain.

If you want your content to convert, stop begging for emails—instead, offer a deal worth taking.

If you want potential patients to give you access to their inbox, you should give them something they'll save to their phone or hang on their fridge—something actually useful.

One of my favorite examples is from Oshi Health. They offer personalized GI care, and their gift to email subscribers is an epic cookbook featuring 31 simple, gut-friendly recipes.

This works for a few reasons:

- It’s genuinely helpful to their target audience—people with GI issues who need to put dinner on the table without irritating their symptoms.

- The recipes are developed by registered dieticians, not some random food blogger, which shows that they rely on vetted experts.

- Oshi invested in making it premium, with pro photography, tips, and a user-friendly digital layout. People feel like they’re getting something valuable, and they associate that quality, high-value asset with the brand.

Research shows that high-quality lead magnets increase pop-up conversion by up to 102% on mobile and up to 155% desktop.

Create something your ideal customer would find practical and delightful, and they’ll happily trade you their email to get it.

My entire home gym set-up fits into a third of my garage.

Too many health companies treat their blog like a once-grand hotel.

Opened with buzz… then the paint peeled, the plumbing leaked, and there aren't anywhere close to enough outlets.

That’s what we see over and over at Healthyish Content at least: Outdated studies. Thin explainers. Broken links. Anonymous authors. No medical reviewers. Zero alignment with today’s Google Search or ChatGPT health content reality.

That’s not just sloppy—in our space, it's dangerous and bad for business. We’ve now revived blogs for co's like Parsley, NOCD, Allara, Oshi, and many more and the pattern is mostly same. If you fix the library, traffic, trust, and conversions come back.

Here’s the 6-week playbook we use:

1️⃣ Audit everything
Inventory every post. Pull GA + GSC + Ahrefs data. Then bucket: keep, refresh, merge, delete, redirect, noindex. (Believe it or not, deleting 10–30% of weak URLs often increases traffic.)

2️⃣ Build the revival squad
Think SEO/GEO strategist, editorial lead, writers, medical reviewers, and design. Then: Audit → Draft → Edit → Review → Design → Publish.

3️⃣ Refresh & optimize like you mean it
Update citations, expand thin posts, add brand POV + patient stories, improve structure, add FAQs, and optimize for humans and LLMs.

4️⃣ Nail medical review
Match topic to the right specialist. Give them a short checklist.  Add “Medically reviewed by…” with credentials + schema. This is the most important trust lever in health--and the most obvious way to show you're not just making AI slop.

5️⃣ Design & technical polish
Fast load, clean design, mobile-first, modern visuals, and CTAs that actually map to your goals. Make sure you're up to speed with modern technical SEO & GEO best practices.

Then, refresh dates, request reindexing, feature updated posts like new posts... and hopefully watch rankings and conversions climb.

Bottom line: Most health companies don’t need “more content." They (at least first) need to revive the content they already have. Here to help if I can!

I’m very pro-AI in healthcare tech—but I draw the line at robot massages.

I tried one when I was visiting NYC a few months ago.

Look, I get the appeal: High-end hotels and spas invest once in the tech, and then it’s just maintenance costs. No human therapists with their scheduling conflicts and personalized approaches. 

Here’s what I liked:
- You control the settings with an iPad and can switch it up any time
- No small talk!

And what I didn’t like:
- It felt like the robot was executing a pre-set sequence, rather than responding to my body’s aches and pains. 
- It’s not particularly relaxing to lay on the table thinking, “what if this very strong robot malfunctions and starts pushing waaaay too hard?”

There’s a reason massage therapists are trained and certified. They learn how to work with people individually and to adjust their technique as they go. I’m a huge fan of my monthly crazy deep tissue AUSTINDEEP massage. 

I get the vision of Aescape. One day, maybe AI robot massages will crush (except not literally). 

But for now, I’ll definitely take the small talk.
