𝐌𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: $𝟕𝟎 I'm an expat Brit who moved to Aotearoa New Zealand in my late 20s. Backpacking NZ and Australia left me convinced this part of the world was where I needed to be. Meeting my soulmate (a Kiwi) in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland cemented the decision. I was drawn here for a reason. It's beautiful. It's less rainy than Britain! There's less people to share our wonderful space. And this country has felt like home from day one. My work life began without a plan. Many do. I found an office job – with a financial planning focus – and stayed with that niche till 2008. Life got tricky then. I had a health diagnosis of chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. No-one really worked from home at the time. I left my job at ASB's Auckland head office without a plan but I knew I could no longer work at a conventional desk – or manage my 45-minute commute – comfortably. The couch was my companion for a year. But my mind missed being busy. Fast-forward and a former ASB colleague reached out on LinkedIn. She recruited me for an Auckland Council freelance remote copywriter role (with some subediting and proofreading thrown in). It felt like a great sidestep. My work history had involved report writing. The ASB job was paraplanner (investment recommendation writer). Achieving this and being able to work from my newly-minted comfy home office felt huge. Since then I've written, sub-edited and proof-read web, magazine and other published content in financial planning, mortgages, plumbing, education, aged care, tech, wellbeing, building and property investment, and life and living on the land in NZ (I'm sure there's others I've probably forgotten). I have also worked with financial planner businesses as a plain English consultant to help untangle complex topics to be more user friendly. What I've learned, is – once you are good with words and clear on who your audience is, what they want to read, and where and how they want to read it – you can appeal to anyone. It's the words that count. I'm lucky to have regular gigs with a collection of people I respect across New Zealand. It doesn't matter where they are, my internet connection's good. I also work with US and UK organisations and individuals. It's useful to have our different time zones – it limits downtime. If you're still reading, well done, I respect you already. Don't head off before sending me a connection request. I'll follow up by DM and we can go from there. No pressure. We click or we don't, Dawn PS If you need encouragement head to my Recommendations
