→ The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS): As Chapter Advisor at the University of Rhode Island, I mentor students in leadership development and career readiness. I guide chapter operations, support programming, and help students translate learning into meaningful outcomes.

→ For Those Who Would: As a Board Member and Treasurer, I contribute to a mission that empowers individuals with chronic illnesses or injuries to engage in athletic and recreational activities.

I'm the Founder and CEO of Inevitabl LLC, a consultancy committed to supporting sales and HR leaders in the health, wellness, and fitness sectors as they navigate the complexities of organizational culture, communication, and performance, and am Co-Founder of Epicenter Training where we Empower Personal Trainers to Thrive Independently.

Happy Saturday all! It’s a CPR/AED/First Aid Recertification type of morning!

At 24, I managed a team of 25 personal trainers and was 2nd in command to the GM at a gym with nearly 3,000 members.

We were growing in all the right ways, too.

→ Revenue was up
→ New members were joining
→ Trainers were busy with clients
→ Client feedback was overwhelmingly positive

Despite this, there were still hiccups.

We weren't immune to conflict and didn't have a uniform way to address it when it occurred. We handled things based on instinct or whatever worked before. Sometimes that went smoothly and other times not so much.

Conflict resolution training would have helped us:

→ Approach tough conversations with more confidence
→ Use a consistent framework across managers
→ Enhance communication across departments
→ Improve overall performance
→ Retain more staff

We didn't have that sort of formal training back then. But, it's available for organizations to put in place now.

One week from today, I'll be speaking with students in KIN 390: Seminar in Kinesiology in the University of Rhode Island College of Health Sciences.

I'll share how a career that started in fitness led me through entrepreneurship, edtech sales, consulting, adjunct teaching, nonprofit board service, and into higher ed strategy, partnerships, and honor society chapter advising.

It's been a non-linear path with more possibilities than I ever expected.

🎓 DBA Scholar Spotlight: Mary Stickler, DBA Practitioner-Scholar (Cohort 6)

Today, we’re excited to spotlight Mary Stickler, a member of the URI College of Business Doctor of Business Administration program and an Analytics Supervisor at Marsh McLennan Agency – Midwest. Originally from Chicago’s South Side and now living in Lakeview East, Mary brings a strong analytical background and global perspective to the DBA community.

Mary holds a BA in Mathematics from Roosevelt University and an MA in International Business from the University of Greenwich in London. Her academic foundation, combined with her professional experience in analytics and consulting, ultimately led her back to academia—this time through a practitioner-focused doctoral program.

Her dissertation explores the impacts of a hybrid work environment on the professional development of entry-level employees. Inspired by conversations with managers across industries, Mary is examining a growing concern: early-career professionals who entered the workforce post-COVID may be missing out on the informal learning and mentorship that naturally occurs in fully staffed offices. Through her research, she hopes to both identify the scope of this challenge and uncover actionable solutions for managers navigating hybrid teams.

Within the DBA program, Mary is mentored by Dr. James M. Cataldo and values the opportunity to apply rigorous research to real-world managerial issues. Her work reflects the DBA program’s mission to bridge theory and practice while addressing timely challenges facing today’s organizations.

Outside of work and coursework, Mary’s first love is music—and travel often follows. Many of her trips are planned around concerts in faraway places, and she’s already counting down to the program’s upcoming residency in Italy.

Her advice to current and prospective DBA students? Remember that while the program is demanding, it’s also meant to be enjoyed. There’s never a “perfect” time—sometimes the best move is to take the leap and figure it out as you go.

This morning, my colleague David and I had pleasure of facilitating our Emotional Intelligence workshop to employees at the Community Action Partnership of Providence County. Their team provided helpful insight on how they manage their emotions and it was a very productive conversation. Special thanks to Susan Connaughton, BS, SHRM-CP for the invitation! 

This was a full circle moment for me because growing up, my mother and I benefited from CAPP’s LIHEAP program which helps low income Providence residents pay for their heating utility bills. 

I’m looking forward to continuing to give back to the CAPP community and the Providence community at large.

The URI COB Career Fair has been postponed due to the blizzard. A rescheduled date in March will be announced soon.

Weather Alert: URI to resume hybrid schedule for classes and operations Thursday, Feb. 26.

All lecture-based courses, including seminars, will be held remotely. The format for labs, clinicals, and studio/performance courses will be determined by the instructor. Faculty are asked to communicate course plans directly with students via Brightspace.

Administrative and academic offices will reopen. Essential employees must report to work; non-essential employees are encouraged to work remotely if feasible.

A partial parking ban is in effect through at least 6 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 27.
