They said being a fractional is easy. It’s not. 

You were able to create change in the business when you were an employee leading the way, so you must be able to do the same as a fractional, right? It’s not the same. You might be able to create change, but now you’re also running every part of your own business. You need a solid client list and leads, you need a clear process, you need a functioning business model, you need to manage your own finances, and, you need support... but there’s no clear roadmap and you haven’t found a way to fully make it work for you. So, how do you manage building your fractional business without burning out or fading away? 

Fractional Leaders fall short in 4 major categories when building their practice

- Lack a strategy and optimized process for marketing, networking, and closing business consistently
- Lack tactics and strategies for building out clear SOWs and process flows with clients that allow for clear boundaries and effective time management

Sometimes, the best learning happens off the clock.

This past week at the The Baby Bathwater Institute Hilton Head Retreat, I was reminded why entrepreneurial communities like this are so rare — and so needed.

It’s not just the caliber of minds in the room (though that’s impressive). It’s the generosity. The openness. The willingness to share the “real stuff” — the experiments that worked, the failures that taught, and the insights that changed everything.

And of course — the fun.
Because this community are truly Defenders of Good Times.

Some of the best conversations happen while the band’s playing, when laughter and connection are the currency. Those are the moments that remind me that building, scaling, and leading don’t have to be isolating — they can be deeply human.

Scaling $1M-$50M Companies with a Proven Framework

Let me share with you the first thing we typically see when we work in an organization. 

When we're talking to a leadership team and we're just witnessing, observing, participating, often what we see is there's complications when it comes to decision making.

You'll see somebody trying to make a future oriented decision and somebody's really focused on the strategy and somebody's talking about an execution element, but all three of them are talking about different focuses at the same time...  and it confuses the decision that needs to get made. 

And you can feel this tension show up in the conversation because:
The execution person is fighting for the execution decision. 
The strategic person is fighting for the strategic decision. 
And the vision person is fighting for the vision...
And... no one is wrong.

What hasn't been done is actually clarifying what level of decision needs to be made, and then organizing the conversation accordingly.  

What we implement in those cases is what we call the ACE framework: 
➡️Establish CLARITY
➡️Define ALIGNMENT
➡️Drive EXECUTION

When you know at which level the decision needs to be made, it clears up confusion and allows the team to move forward.

When a system “breaks,” it’s easy to default to blame.
But as leaders, the best response is curiosity.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how often leaders mistake ambition for clarity.

Ambition makes us chase everything — new goals, new hires, new ideas — but clarity helps us choose what actually matters.

When we coach, we recognize when complexity and urgency get our clients frenzied. In that state, it’s very hard to make good decisions. When we slow down enough to define where we’re going and why, you can direct your actions toward a clear goal, which leads to small results at first, but huge ones when that direction stays consistent.

Hard work will always matter, but without clarity, it’s just motion vs. momentum (movement with direction).
