Hi, I'm Daniela!

I'm a consultant, speaker and writer on digital marketing for the design and construction industry. 

Through my marketing agency, I help firms 5X their website traffic and 2X their sales inquiries in 12 months. I also write a weekly newsletter, Marketing Meets Design, and speak on podcasts, at conferences and at local colleges.

I've been working in SEO and digital marketing for 10+ years and started the agency in 2020. I have a Master's in Digital Marketing from Aula CM in Madrid, Spain and a Bachelor's of Commerce from Toronto Metropolitan University. I’ve been featured at the Interior Design Show, Canadian Architect Magazine and CBC Radio.

I'm Portuguese-Canadian, speak 4 languages and currently live in Toronto. When I'm not working, you can find me salsa dancing.

Daniela Furtado

Hi, my name is Daniela. I run an agency called Findable Digital Marketing and I teach my own course at Cannabis Marketing School. 

Here are a few things I'm good at professionally:

1. Digital Marketing and SEO. I make people and businesses easy to find online. Most clients are in the design-build and cannabis industries.

2. Teaching. Whether it's in a meeting room, classroom, or on stage, I enjoy teaching technical and boring topics with spice and humor. My eldest student was 98 years old. 

3. Languages. I speak English, Portuguese, and Spanish fluently and conversational Mandarin. 

In my spare time, I enjoy life drawing, salsa dancing, and cooking.

In this week’s email newsletter, I shared a story about hiking on São Miguel Island.

Like a steep hike, growing a business is hard. 

But difficult terrain is a lot more enjoyable when you don’t do it alone.

Friday’s workshop was amazing.

Unfortunately—and fortunately—marketing has to understand SEO. 

You don’t need all the tools or tricks, but you do need to use the principles and give the machines something to work with.

I've been tracking this, informally, for about 4 months, now, and roughly 40% of our leads originate with someone searching for something in AI, leading to me or the firm (Punctuation).

I didn't know AI was going to be a thing back when I first started writing for public consumption back in 1994, but the one thing I've always believed is that a) good things happen to people who risk thinking out loud in public and b) whether you love or hate search engines, you have to give them something to work with.

(In case you're wondering, I have never used an SEO tool and never once done a key word analysis. On the other hand, my writing style is somewhat structured, unintentionally, and the engines like that.)

So why am I saying this? Well, duh, you've got to give the search engines something to work with...and the occasional LinkedIn post or even active commenting are not that. It might be a podcast, a short little book, articles on your website, the LinkedIn newsletter tool (which they do scrape), or something. I love how Gini Dietrich's PESO Model makes these distinctions, highlighting how important "Owned" is in that system.

But I fear that the AI tools are going to focus a spotlight on fewer and fewer people, making discoverability a bigger challenge than it is now. You can buy ads on LinkedIn and Adwords and Facebook, get some mentions in industry rags, be an active social media user, and on and on, but I wonder if there's going to be a decreasing return on that investment of your time. I think you HAVE to be active on LinkedIn if you want the business world to take you seriously, but I firmly believe that should not be the primary activity. Please read that again. Thank you.

To win this game, you're going to have to think long term, and being a factor in AI recommendations is going to be a bigger and bigger part of that I suspect, and LinkedIn participation is not the best way to ensure that you are noticed by the aggregation of fewer and fewer recommendation sources (AI engines).

It became clear to me, at today’s meeting, that you, assume that by paying for the design of the interior of your house you have bought all my time. The fact that you do not find me at home all day (which according to you is an indication that I am not working on your house), and that I do not provide you with a daily progress report, allows you bursts of anger tat me.

I want you to know that I am not obliged, under any circumstances, to account to you for my time. I am not your employee. At most I am executing design work for you and that any other work I have done or time I have spent I have
done because I have wanted to and not because I have been obliged.

Planning and design demands time, thought and care, and it is not possible to achieve good results when pressure is exerted as you have done. Further, it is worthshile for you to know,
that after you appointed an interior architect you may not go out and buy a carpet for the full basement, without even granting me the courtesy of showing me a sample before purchasing the carpet.

And you did this despite our arrangement that we would do so together and I waited for you to tell me a time convenient to both of you.

In the light of these events, I wish you regard this letter as an expression of my unwillingness to proceed with the design of your house and that I have ceased all work on the project.

I relinquish any outstanding monies which you owe me for the work I have done to date.
I am enclosing the leaflet about the kitchen hood you gave me and under separate cover, all plans you provided at the commencement of the work.
