A bit about me:

I am an ICF-certified coach and career development practitioner, and I’ve won several awards, including being a 3-time recipient of Outstanding Career Leader, Alumni of Distinction and a nominee for a Premier’s Award, all connected to my work in career development. My experience includes Administration, HR, Finance and PR, and as a former part-time professor in the executive administration program at Sheridan College.

One of my career highlights was working with UNIFEM (now UN Women) in New York, which deepened my passion for empowering women in their careers. I am also a career coach with the Women’s Executive Network (WXN) Master Coach Xcelerator Program.

👗 What does “Smart Business Casual Attire” really mean?

It's Friday, so here goes a different kind of post!

I just received another conference reminder.

It appears that Fall is the season for conferences, meetings, and galas. 

Since September, I have already attended all of the above, but there are others to go.

For e.g., this month, I have a few, and two have suggested attendees dress in "smart business casual attire". But what does that look like, especially for women leaders??

I know it's about blending professionalism with comfort, but does it mean:

 **Tailored pants or skirts paired with blouses or structured tops?

 **Dresses that are polished yet relaxed?

 **Blazers or cardigans that add a refined touch?

 **Closed-toe flats, high / low heels, or even sneakers? 😜

In my opinion, the key is balance, a bit elevated but approachable. 

It’s less formal than a full suit, but more intentional than everyday casual. But, am not sure!

𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐃𝐘: How One Client Landed a Competitive Role by Thinking Differently

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

My client was competing for a senior leadership position in a large pharmaceutical company.

There were two other internal candidates — one a male director at her level, and another who was doing some of the tasks for 22 years but the role was going to expand in scope.

To make things even more challenging, the company was also considering external candidates.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞

How could my client stand out against strong internal and external competition — especially when the others had longer tenure or more visibility?

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲

We focused on strategic positioning and differentiation.

𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: She compared her experience, leadership style, and results with the other two internal candidates.

𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩 𝙞𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬𝙨: Instead of guessing, she reached out to people in similar roles across the pharmaceutical industry to understand how the role was evolving and what success looked like.

𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙖 𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙪𝙖𝙡 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩: Based on her findings, she created a PowerPoint presentation summarizing her insights, vision for the role, and ideas for leading the team forward.

Even though they didn't ask her to prepare a presentation, we decided she should take one with her.

She walked into the interview prepared, confident, and with data-driven insights that none of the other candidates had.

She nailed the interview — and got the job.

How My Client Landed a Highly Competitive Role

Here in this post, lies some practical tips from Hannah Morgan on how to answer the "Why did you leave?" question.

One additional point is that layoffs are becoming so common these days that it's making the question easier to answer. Most people understand the volatility of the job market.

Stop letting the "Why did you leave?" question derail your job interviews. It's time to craft a compelling response. 

You want your answer to come across as truthful, concise, and spoken with confidence.  

The recruiter or person asking this question doesn’t want all the gory details.  (Unless you provide them and that raises red flags for your candidacy)

If you were let go as part of a layoff or RIF or downsizing, that is all the information you need to provide.  

But if the departure was more complicated, you will want to try to make your answer fit within one of these 4 categories: 

🔄 Management change
📈 Career progression
👨‍👩‍👧 Personal/family change
✨ Career or purpose clarity

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind:

◾Take ownership/control of the decision to leave whenever possible  
◾Stick to the facts. Put emotions/feelings aside
◾It’s just a short sentence or two. Just enough to move the conversation forward
◾Conclude with a positive spin - why this role and/or company fit what you are looking for
◾Express confidence and don’t be apologetic

One of the best ways I’ve heard to explain this is to focus on what you are running towards, rather than what you are running from. 

Practice out loud until you feel confident!
