Can you enroll in COBRA instead of Medicare when turning 65?


Short answer: No 

If you’re an advisor you know how anxious your clients can get as they approach 65 and try to enroll through Social Security.

One thing I hear all the time:

➡️ “I’ll just take COBRA for now and figure Medicare out later.”

Here’s why that’s a costly mistake.

COBRA is a continuation of employer coverage after someone separates from their job. 

But once your client turns 65, COBRA is no longer considered primary coverage. 

Medicare is!!

So even if they pay the COBRA premiums, any claims can be denied. The insurance company will say, “You should’ve had Medicare as your primary coverage.”

Now you’ve got a client paying out-of-pocket for care they thought was covered.

Medicare FOMO is real, but I can come with severe consequences.

My uncle texted me this the other day after his neighbor was talking about having a Medicare plan that comes with a free gym membership.

He wanted to know if he had a free gym membership too.

I had to explain to him that he didn't, and there's a good reason for that.

Let me explain, because this confuses most people, including your clients.

My uncle is on Original Medicare (the real, government-run program). That means:

✅ He can see any doctor in the U.S. who takes Medicare
✅ His coverage can't be canceled mid-year
✅ His doctors can’t drop him out of the blue
✅ And his max out-of-pocket for the year is just $288

His neighbor is on a Medicare Advantage plan, a private replacement with:

- Limited provider networks
- Prior authorizations and potential claim denials
- Exposure to $10K+ in annual medical bills
- And yes, a free gym membership.

Typical with health insurance, many people choose their Medicare plans based on their current health circumstances rather than thinking about their potential needs in the future.

You cannot just switch Medicare plans once you make your choice at 65, so that’s why it’s crucial to get it right the first time.

This is not the time where your 65+ clients on Government Medicare can switch plans.

However, this IS the time to review and potentially change your clients’ prescription drug plans (Part D).

Here’s what we’ve been seeing so far in the last few weeks helping your clients:

✅ $1,500–$2,000 in savings for many clients just by switching to a better drug plan
✅ One client avoided over $30,000 in annual co-pays for a specialty medication
