I know the business. I'll figure out the rest.

That's what he told me in our first session.

Three months into his CXO role at a new organization.

Brilliant track record. Deep industry expertise.

But something wasn't working.

"Walk me through what's happening," I asked.

"I understand the business better than most people here. I've done this before. But decisions aren't landing the way I expected. My team seems... hesitant."

"What do you mean by hesitant?"

"They nod in meetings. But nothing moves forward with urgency. It's like there's an invisible wall."

"What have you focused on since joining?"

"Learning the P&L. Understanding the market. Getting up to speed on operations. The technical stuff."

"And what conversations have you had with people?"

Pause.

"What do you think matters to them?"

7 Tips For CXOs in Transaction

My inbox has 247 unread emails.

My calendar is back to back for this entire week.

My phone won’t just stop.

I’ve never felt more alone.

Multiple senior leaders have said this to me.

Different companies. Different roles. The same words.

The more people who need you, the lonelier it gets.

I'm watching this play out everywhere right now.

Leaders with huge teams. Packed calendars. Everyone wanting a piece of their time.

Yet navigating the biggest transition of their career with nobody to actually talk to.

Some shifts happen when you step into a CXO role:
• Old colleagues - the lunch conversations don’t flow the same.
• New peers - still figuring out where you fit.
• Your team - they need answers, not doubts.

So you show up confident. Decisive. Like you’ve got it handled.

Then drive home wondering if anyone sees the real you anymore.

A CFO told me recently:
“I have 300 people reporting to me. Can’t think of one I can actually talk to.”

That one stayed with me.

It’s not her. It’s how we’ve built this whole thing.

We give CXOs massive responsibility - and then accidentally cut them off from real connection.

And it’s not just loneliness. It makes everything harder.
– People stop telling you what’s really going on.
– You second-guess decisions because you can’t think out loud with anyone.
– You catch problems late because real feedback stopped flowing.

So what helps?

Three people. Seriously.
– One who’s been in your seat. Outside your company. No politics.
– One inside who’ll tell you the truth — even when it’s uncomfortable.
– One who’s seen this transition a hundred times and knows what’s coming.

That CFO?
We spent an hour mapping it out. Two calls lined up. One truth-teller identified.

She texted me the next morning:
“Already feels different knowing I’m not doing this alone.”

That’s it. That’s the shift. -
Not a better plan. Not working harder.

✨Just stopping the solo act.

A 10-year-old went on national television.

And how amazing -  thousands of adults decided to destroy him online.

Here's what breaks my heart.

We tell children to be confident.

Then shame them when they are.

We tell them to speak up.

Then call them arrogant when they do.

We tell them to take risks.

Then publicly humiliate them when they fail.


A 10-year-old on national television isn't arrogant.

He's a child managing overwhelming emotions with an undeveloped brain.

His prefrontal cortex won't be fully formed until his mid-twenties.

That's not arrogance.

That's childhood.


But we've turned his mistake into entertainment.

Used his vulnerability to feel superior.

Built our engagement on a child's pain.

And told every watching child: Don't put yourself out there. If you fail, they'll destroy you.


I'm worried about every child who sees this and learns the world isn't safe for imperfection.

Every child who decides to play small.

Every child who chooses silence.

Every child who stops taking risks because the cost is public humiliation.

If there's a failure here, it's not the child's.

It's ours.

You are more than this moment.

You took a risk. That's courage.

Many kids have done the same but because they won...they were appreciated instead. 

You can learn from your mistakes, when you are ready.

You don't need the entire world to teach you or tell you who you are.

So don't let strangers dim your light.

The world needs children willing to try, to speak, to be bold.

Even when it doesn't go perfectly.

Not our judgment.

The wounds we create in childhood don't stay there.

They follow us.

They whisper to us.

They shape who we become.
