As a former trainer for one of the most successful sales training companies in the world, and leader and developer of countless sales professionals and teams, I founded Sell As You Are to help salespeople, entrepreneurs, and sales leaders champion their teams and themselves to leverage their unique strengths in the sales process. My methodology cuts through the dissatisfaction of traditional sales scripts and the pressure for salespeople to put on a “show” and empowers sales professionals to feel impassioned by their work because it is true to who they are. 

After spending 10 years teaching high school history before transitioning my career towards sales, I know firsthand how to address the fears, insecurities, and reluctance salespeople face daily in their interactions with prospects. I spent about 4 hours yesterday shoveling snow and thinking about the ICE shooting in Minneapolis.

I don’t know exactly what to say, but I will do my best…

We, as a people, have so much more in common than we realize.

We almost all want basically the same things.

- A sense of freedom and liberty.

- Safety and security for ourselves and our family.

- An opportunity to live and to raise children in alignment with our values.

- A government that we feel is working to make society better. 

And, so on…

So why are we so divided? Well, mostly because of who it benefits.

Most politicians want us divided. It drives us to the polls and pours in money in fundraising.

Most media wants us divided. It drives clicks and viewership. 

Social media shows us literally the worst version of “the other side”, just to get us ginned up against one another.

❗️We “cancel” our friends and family members.

❗️We repost things about how the “other side” is horrific and evil and accuse them of somehow ruining our lives.

❗️We set “boundaries” with people, declaring that if they no longer have the same values, we won’t even SPEAK to them. 

𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐖𝐄 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐘 𝐑𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐈𝐑 𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐒.

“If it bleeds it leads”. 

And if it gets us all worked up against each other, it will keep us coming back for more.

And this is our moment as a people. 

❌ To not shut each other out.

❌ To not fall into tribal patterns.

❌ To not allow our righteousness to close our hearts.

To take time to feel our sadness, grief, and heartbreak that is hiding beneath our anger. When you do this, you connect deeper to your truth, soften yourself, and make room for compassion to begin to show up.

To seek to understand and to recognize just how influenced/brainwashed so many of us have become.

You want to make a difference?

Open your heart and your mind to others. 

Engage with humility and compassion. 

Love your neighbor. I mean it. Really try. 

This is the ONLY way this changes. Your side “winning” the tribal battle won’t fix things. 

This is our call forward. I’m encouraging you (and me) to heed the call.

I’m in Hooksett, NH today for the Merchants Fleet Sales Summit for the third year in a row.

Last night when I attended their team social night, I had more hugs than handshakes.

Truly the best part of my job is being able to build partnerships like this one.

Can someone please tell me when "sales" became "GTM" and why?

I am so confused. 

Should I change my profession to "GTM trainer"? Do I look too millennial if I don't update it to keep up with the trend?

There are seasons to life. Just like the weather. 

A couple years ago, I realized that I was moving way too fast. 

Doing too much.

In my head, and not my heart.

Distracted and unfocused. 

Too caught up in the drama on social media and too unplugged from my own home. 

I was building a business and trying to "provide" for my family. But I was providing the wrong things. 

So I slowed down. I said "no" to more things. 

We pulled the kids out of school. We got rid of the TV. 

Madeline Caldwell and I worked deeply on ourselves (and still do) to try to detach from the things that were not serving us. 

And on Monday as I was teaching Geography class, I realized it was all worth it. 

That season was hard, scary, and beautiful.

And now it is time for a new season. 

Time to build again. 

Time to think big again. 

Except this time, it will come from a place of possibility and potential. 

Not fear and survival. 

I say this to encourage you to listen to yourself. 

Connect with yourself. 

Be willing to HEAR what your soul is whispering to you. You know what is best for you, when you slow down enough to listen.

"Our new CRO has revamped our demo script" 

Ugh. Please stop. 

I heard this from a prospect recently whose sales team can't sell. 

They can't get deep enough in Discovery. 

They don't create equal business stature. 

They don't set a proper frame for the call. 

They don't gain commitment. 

They don't fully qualify. 

But hey - They got ANOTHER demo script!

Why?

Because every sales leader can spruce up a demo script. 

Few can teach or coach their people how to do the nuanced, difficult aspects of selling. 

So, instead...they...

🛑 Show even MORE of their product without prompting from the prospect.

🛑 Or they offer discounts. 

🛑 Or they run more pilots. 

Basically, they continue to add things into their sales motion that would keep them from having to, you know, SELL.
