One of the promises of AI is that it can cut down on workloads, letting employees focus more on higher-value, more engaging tasks. But new research shows that AI tools don’t actually reduce work; they tend to make it worse. The study found that employees are working faster, taking on a wider range of tasks, and even working longer hours, often without being asked. That might seem like a good thing, but it’s not that simple. These changes can be unsustainable, leading to workload overload, mental fatigue, burnout, and poorer decision-making. The productivity boost at first can end up causing lower-quality work, staff quitting, and other issues. To fix this, companies need to set some guidelines for AI use, like taking intentional breaks, organizing work better, and keeping humans involved.
