This needs to stop!
Yesterday I was speaking with a candidate that went through the entire interview process for an Account Executive role.
The company hiring is not a client of mine.
At the start of the process they asked her what her compensation expectations were. 
She answered 100K base with a 180-200K OTE that is uncapped.
This was asked and answered at the first interview and confirmed at other interviews.
Three interviews later she gets an offer 80K base with a 150K OTE?
She thanked them for the offer and explained that she has already told them he was looking at a compensation with 100K base and a 180-200K OTE.
They responded with that was their offer.
She declined their offer and thought they did her a favour.
If the company is unprofessional and or unethical in the interview process it is very often a sign of things to come.
There is also the fact in my experience even if the candidate takes the lower offer at least 75% of the time the candidate will leave for a better offer within a year.
This needs to stop it is not helping the company or the candidate.

Try this before your next job interview!
15 minutes before the interview start think of positive things that make you feel good.
Playing with your kids.
Finishing your workout or spin class.
That book you finished.
That time you won the spelling contest.
The day you got engaged.
When you child was born.
Think of several positive things that make you feel great.
Then when you have the interview you will be in a great state of mind.
I believe people give off an energy.
If you can put yourself in a positive calm state of mind for your interview I am almost certain it will help your chances of getting hired.

P.S. I had two candidates as finalists for a position this week. I asked the VP of  Sales why they picked the one candidate over the other with very comparable skills and experience. He said the one candidate just had such great energy and is a person you naturally are drawn to.

Would you reject a candidate because their employer closed the office in the city or country they worked in?
Would you reject a candidate because their employer went bankrupt or shut down?
Would you reject a candidate because they left a toxic employer?
When a candidate has three different employers in eight years and you automatically reject them as being unsuitable.
How you do you know without speaking with them what their situation is?
Invest a bit of your time and find out.
The easiest way on the planet to get better candidates that others are missing is by being curious and showing some empathy.

I am not looking to shame anybody however I think this needs to be said.
 Last week  I saw a post giving advice on how to boost your chances of getting a job.
The person who posted it basically said research the company, their products/solutions, their competition and the industry they are in.
See if somebody in your network knows somebody where you are applying.
They also said make sure your linkedin profile and resume are current and that they match.
 In addition they said have references, and testimonials ready.
All great advice in my opinion.
Some people were responding I am not doing all that work. That is a lot to ask.
My question to these people is what is the alternative?

Am I am influencer or social media guru? Absolutely not.
For anybody who does not know my story I have been on linkedin 16 years and I post almost every business day around 8.30am EST.
I am on linkedin to learn new things and to try and help others succeed and of course promote my business. 
On a great day all three things may happen.
My advice keep showing up and know what exactly it is you are looking to accomplish when you post.
If you are not posting I would encourage you to start if I can do this anybody can.

Bet on yourself!
Yesterday I was speaking with a candidate and they asked me what is your best career advice for 2026?
My answer was Bet on yourself.
In no special order.
-Work on getting healthier mentally, physically, spiritually.
-Try and spend more time with the people in your life who are important to you.
-Surround yourself with positive people that want to see you succeed.
-Get a coach and or a mentor.
-Learn something new.
-Try to have more fun.
-Meet new people and get out of your comfort zone.
-Take calculated risks.
None of these things will guarantee you career or life success however you will be in a better position to deal with whatever comes your way.

This morning it was a fresh -14 C or 6 F so instead of walking outside for my thirty minute morning walk I hit the treadmill in the basement. 
When I am on the treadmill I like to put classic rock videos on youtube and that entertains me and wakes me up.
Keep in mind I love classic rock I have been to way over 100 concerts it is in my dna.
I do not recall the first song this morning the second one was Sade I was like ok why not this is something I do not listen to very often.  A few of her videos played then Toni Braxton Unbreak My Heart came on. I am not going to lie the thirty five minutes on the treadmill flew by. These two ladies are amazing and their music is great.
My point is try something different once in a while and get out of your comfort zone from time to time both in your business and personal life.

Let's Go 2026!!

Everybody knows one of the best ways to get a job or advance your career is to have a great network.
Here are two ways to help you with that that will cost very little or nothing. 
Everytime that you meet somebody write down what you discussed and everything that you learned about the person and their life.
This way the next time you see them you can ask about their reno or their hobby or whatever it is you discussed the last time you met them. A great way to make a positive impression.
The second thing you can do whenever you meet somebody send them a message later that day or the next day it was great to see you I enjoyed our conversation feel free to reach out if there is anything I can do to help you.
You can email the message or I think it would be even more effective it you send a letter through the post office.
I am a big believer standing out in a positive way can change your life.
The better you get at this the better your chances will be of a positive outcome.

Do you have a side hustle or do you plan to start one in 2026?

Just 43% of people say they plan to job search in 2026, down from 93% last year, according to a December survey of 1,504 U.S. workers from Monster.
In 2026 workers are still feeling the financial squeeze but aren’t optimistic that they can land a new role, let alone a better-paying one.
As one economist put it, the U.S. is in a “hiring recession,” with 2025 being the worst year for total job gains outside of a recession since 2003.
Meanwhile, some 75% of employees said they plan to stay in their current jobs until 2027, according to a separate October 2025 Monster report.
Nearly two-thirds of workers say they’re turning to extra income streams this year, with 32% already holding a side hustle and 30% planning to start one in 2026, according to the Monster survey.
Workers are prioritizing job stability and income protection in their day jobs, so they’re quietly picking up side hustles. 
A side hustle boom could encourage more people to change jobs throughout the year if the market outlook improves. Side hustlers could open up new opportunities, dip into a different industry, build contacts and potentially turn their passion project into a new full-time role, she says.
For the roughly 4 in 10 people who are resolute in finding a new job this year. 
Despite the sour jobs outlook, workers aren’t “necessarily disengaging with their career, “They’re basically playing the long game in terms of preservation and planning.”

What do you typically do when somebody posts a negative comment to your post or comment?

Can you be more productive at work and get more free time outside of work?
Maybe these two routines will help.
The first routine is for the run-up to a deep work block.
“Our brain is not wired for sustained concentration on an abstract or symbolic topic,” 
Many workers are constantly bombarded with notifications throughout their day. A Microsoft report from April found that employees are interrupted every 2 minutes by emails, meetings or pings. The brain is in a very different state managing all of that digital noise than when you’re zeroed in on deep work, so it takes time to switch between these modes.
Before a deep work block on your calendar, you might take a quick walk around the block, make tea, or clean your desk — something you can repeat and use as a signal to your brain it’s time to switch modes. Think of it like stretching before you go on a run.
“You can’t just shut down your inbox, open Microsoft Word and think, ‘Now I’m focused,’” 
At the end of your workday, you also need a shutdown routine.
“It’s a way of clearing out your brain after work so it’s not going to be held partially hostage by work thoughts for your time outside of work,” 
A shutdown routine could be signing off at the end of the workday that  includes doing a final inbox check, looking ahead on his work calendar and writing down any reminders.
At the end of it, you should feel, “We’re in a good place, there’s nothing else I need to figure out tonight, we’re on track for the things we need to get done.” 
A shutdown routine won’t magically put an end to your work anxiety, but it can “help teach your brain to slow down work ruminations.”
“Instead of engaging with the ruminations, you say I checked that checkbox and I wouldn’t have done that if I hadn’t gone through everything and convinced myself we’re in a good position to shut down for the day,” 
“It prevents you from the temptation of maybe I should just go check my inbox,”  “It helps you move on from work in a way that eventually your brain learns so you can get more out of your life outside work.”

New Years Resolutions rarely work!
Here is a smarter way to build better habits.
If you’re hoping to start a new routine this year try conducting “tiny experiments” with the habits you’d like to try, instead of setting lofty, unrealistic goals.
How to create a ‘tiny experiment’
Tiny experiments follow a very simple formula “I will [do X action] for [Y duration].”
An example could be  “I will take a walk on my lunch break every day for one month.”
A good tiny experiment meets four criteria: It must be “purposeful, actionable, continuous and trackable.”
To be purposeful, the experiment has to involve something you are “deeply curious about,”  and an actionable experiment is one that you can conduct “right now with your current resources.”
It’s crucial to run the experiment continuously in order to collect enough data, she explains, and tracking your consistency will help you determine how well the experiment is working for you.
The key is to “withhold judgment until you’re done conducting your experiment,”  Trying something new can be uncomfortable, but that’s part of the process.
After the experiment is over, you can decide whether or not you would like to incorporate that action into your daily life. 
Why this approach works
Many of us have a tendency “to always want to go for the bigger, more impressive, more ambitious version of a goal,”  but that mentality has several pitfalls and are often “too overwhelming or unrealistic.”
Telling people ‘I’m going to jog twice a week for one month’ may sound less impressive than ‘I’m going to run every day for the next year,’ but “then you actually get the very healthy dopamine at the end from actually having done the thing,” 
Tiny experiments help shift people from an outcome-based mindset to a curious, explorative one. With this perspective, “success is not reaching a particular milestone that you have defined in advance. Success is learning something new,” she says.
