Yesterday, I had no idea what would unfold about five minutes after this photo 😬

My youngest, Grady, would look at me and say:

“Dad… I would’ve punched him if I were you.”

Here’s why.

We get off the lift to drop into one of our favorite runs.

Grady and I head into the trees.
My middle son, Justin, stays on the trail.

Out of nowhere, a snowboarder comes ripping down the mountain—reckless speed, zero awareness.

At the last possible second, Justin randomly cuts the opposite direction.

If he hadn’t, it would’ve been a direct, high-speed collision. Bad. 

Potentially life-changing.

The snowboarder blows past him… and laughs.

That’s when I knew—this wasn’t an accident. He knew exactly what he was doing.

So yeah… dad mode kicked in.

I chased him down the mountain—fast, but in control.

And karma showed up before I did.

He pushed it too far, lost control, flew off the trail, and tumbled hard.

I caught up to him and calmly told him the truth:

He almost took my son out.
He was a danger to kids and families on that mountain.

His response?

“Shut up, old man. If you’ve got a problem, we can take it out here.”

I laughed and said,
“No need. Karma already handled that with your wipeout.”

That’s when he charged me—full speed—and took a swing.

I ducked. He missed my face by inches.

He took off again… still out of control… nearly hit another kid… and crashed again.

Now others were watching. One guy told me he’d seen this same snowboarder almost take someone out earlier that day.

In that moment, I had two choices:

1️⃣ Chase him to the bottom—risking that he’d hurt someone else.

2️⃣ Step back, report him to ski patrol, and protect the bigger picture.

I chose the second.

That’s when Grady said it:
“Dad, I would’ve punched him.”

Later, I asked him why.

He said he was angry.
Angry that someone could be so knowingly reckless.
Angry that Justin could’ve been seriously hurt.
Angry that the guy tried to swing at me.

And I told him the truth.

“I was angry. And if that punch had landed, things would’ve gone very differently. But you and your brother were watching. You knew I was protecting you. And I wasn’t going to be the one who created chaos just to feed someone ego.”

Leadership isn’t about proving you’re tough.

It’s about knowing when not to throw the punch.

It’s easy to react.

It’s harder—and far more powerful—to respond with control when everything in you wants to explode.

Because the people watching you?

They’re learning who to become by how you handle moments like this.

So I’ll ask you the same question:

What would you have done… knowing two very impressionable sets of eyes were watching every move you made?
