The unseen burden of leadership isn’t the meetings. It’s the shielding.

On my latest podcast clip with Danial Kaabi he said something that most need to hear:

- People see the posts, the emails, the conferences.
- They don’t see the calls you take while you’re meant to be present with your kids.
- They don’t see how much you hold in, just to protect your people. 

A lot of leaders carry pressure in silence because they think it’s their job to keep everyone else “stress-free, worry-free, happy” so performance stays high. 

If you don’t manage what you carry, it leaks into your tone, your decisions, and the way you show up at home.

Danial also shared his reset: training early, every morning. Not for the body. For the head.

That’s the point.
The grass isn’t greener. It’s just a different set of problems.

Every step up comes with a trade-off.

You stop chasing the fantasy and choose what you can live with:

- Stability and a monthly package
- Or freedom and uncertainty

Poor execution at scale is rarely just a people issue. It’s usually a clarity issue created at the top.

If you’re a CEO and your people aren’t performing, stop blaming the team before you audit your leadership.

Too many leaders want high standards without taking responsibility for the environment they created. If execution is off across the board, that usually isn’t an employee problem first. It’s a leadership problem.

Start here:
1. Own it - If the team is underperforming, take the hit first. You set the tone, the standards, the clarity, and the culture.

2. Communicate properly - Most poor performance sits inside poor communication mixed messages, vague expectations, unclear priorities, and leaders assuming people “should just know.”

3. Address it directly and support properly - Say what needs to be said:
“You’re not delivering at the level required.”
Then ask the question most leaders avoid:
“What do you need from me to improve this?”

And then do your part.
Not performative support. Real support. Better direction. Better feedback. Better coaching. Better decisions.

Weak leaders blame down. Strong leaders look in the mirror first.

Balancing control and freedom: the CEO dilemma.

I’m in Dubai 2–8 March. First trip of the year to the region.

Keeping the week simple. I want to meet people and catch up properly.
If we’ve been saying “let’s meet” for ages, this is the week.

DM me and we’ll line it up.
And if there’s someone you think I should meet, tag them.

There was a week I realised my life looked busy but felt flat, so I used my own exercise from the book.

Lead from within also means using your own tools when things feel stale.

In Chapter 1, I give a “micro-experiments” exercise: one small new thing every day for a week new route, new food, new conversation.

At one point, my days had turned into:
- Same desk.
- Same calls.
- Same routes.
- Same thoughts.

Nothing was “wrong”.
But nothing felt alive.

So I did what I ask readers to do:

For seven days I picked one small experiment a day:
- One day: different route on a dog walk.
- Another: reaching out to someone I kept saying “we should catch up” to.
- Another: trying something new in training, instead of going through the motions. 

None of these were big moves.
But they did something important:

- They shook up my Productivity State – new input, new ideas.
- They nudged my People State – new or deeper conversations.
- They reminded my Performance State that energy often follows action, not the other way round.

If your week feels like a copy-paste of the last one, you don’t always need a big plan.

You might just need seven deliberate experiments.

I actually held back from posting anything for a few days.

Last week I shared that I would be in Dubai from 2–8 March.
Obviously this has been postponed.

There’s a lot being said right now. News updates, political commentary, strong opinions, and constant posts across social media. I didn’t want to add more noise to that.

At the same time, many of us are watching what’s happening and forming our own views. That’s natural.

What I’m seeing from the UK media is also mixed. Some information is accurate. Some clearly isn’t. That’s the reality of how quickly things spread today through news outlets, social media, and AI.

One thing I do know from spending time in the region.

The Gulf has always been about people first.

The governments across the region have consistently prioritised the safety of their people and residents. And the communities themselves look out for each other.

So instead of reacting to every headline, post, or political opinion you see online, do something simple.

Reach out to someone you know in the region and check in.

Send a message.
Ask how they are.
Let them know you’re thinking of them.

Humans are humans.
Everyone processes situations like this differently.

Sometimes the best response isn’t another opinion or another post.

It’s simply checking in with someone.

That’s all it takes.

Thinking of my friends across the UAE, Qatar, Saudi, and the wider Gulf.

Everyone talks about AI… but hardly anyone talks about the store teams.

Ron Thurston made a point that hit:

- We talk AI in marketing, e-comm, planning, distribution, robotics
- But the front line still drives most revenue
- So why isn’t the focus on tools that make the store team’s job easier and the customer experience better?

AI needs to work where the customer actually meets your brand.

If you ignore the front line, you waste spend, frustrate staff, and customers feel the gaps fast.

If your store teams had one AI tool tomorrow, what would you want it to fix first?

The Human Voice of AI Transformation in Retail and Frontline Work

Not everyone needs to be removed. Some people just need to be repositioned.

You don’t need to cut everyone off to protect your peace.

But you do need to be honest about who drains your energy, lowers your standards, or leaves you carrying weight that isn’t yours.

Not every relationship needs a dramatic ending. Sometimes the mature move is simply less access, less time, less influence.

And you can do that without bitterness.

Without cruelty.
Without becoming cold.

Set the boundary. Keep the compassion.

Some people are acting from their own pain, confusion, or insecurity. You don’t need to punish that. But you also don’t need to let it shape your life.

You can have the title, the team, the targets… and still feel like you’re reacting all day.

That’s the problem I see over and over:

You lead meetings, but your head is noisy
You make decisions, but you second-guess them after
You manage people, but your own state runs you

This line from Simon Alexander Ong hit it clean:
“You cannot be an effective leader of others if you are not powerfully leading yourself first, and this book will show you how to do exactly that.”

That’s exactly what Burn The Rules is for.

The truth about leadership and human potential from someone who's seen it all

In the latest Burn the Rules episode "The People We Overlook in Leadership" Ron Thurston talks about how for years, he thought leading meant controlling every detail. Running stores, managing teams, making every decision until he realised that true leadership is about empowering others and trusting the process.

The most impactful shift for him was letting go of the need to be in control of everything. 

Instead, he focused on understanding my team’s strengths and creating space for their growth. That’s when Ron truly saw the power of authentic leadership building confidence from within, not just through authority.

And here’s the thing: when you embrace your own imperfect journey, you unlock the ability to inspire others in ways you never imagined.

Maybe that’s the point. Worth thinking about.

The faster you accept what isn’t yours to manage, the lighter you become.

Peace starts when you stop fighting what was never yours to control.

A lot of people burn through energy trying to manage other people’s choices, outside events, and outcomes they were never in charge of in the first place. 

That fight creates stress, frustration, and noise.

The shift happens when you respect the boundary between what’s yours and what isn’t.

- You can control:
- Your response
- Your standards
- Your effort
- Your mindset

That’s where calm comes from. Not from controlling more, but from wasting less energy on what was never yours to hold.

If judgement is shaping your decisions, you’re living for the crowd, not for yourself.

If fear is running your life, you’re not protecting yourself you’re imprisoning yourself.

For a lot of people, the real issue isn’t failure. It’s the thought of failing in front of other people. Being seen trying. Being judged. Looking stupid.

That’s the trap.

The fear of other people’s opinions has kept more people small than failure ever has. It stops careers, businesses, relationships, ideas not because they couldn’t work, but because someone was too busy managing perception instead of living.

At some point, you have to decide:
Do I want approval, or do I want a life?

Because you rarely get both at the start.
If this hits, take it as the sign to move. Not recklessly. But decisively.

Jump. Back yourself. Let people think what they want.

Action for Leaders:

Pressure narrows your thinking.
If you don’t train your mind, you default to instinct and instinct isn’t always leadership.
Under pressure, pause. Clarity expands when reaction slows.

The Cost of Avoidance

When you avoid decisions, you may feel a temporary sense of relief, but the long-term costs can be significant. 

I mention, carrying unresolved decisions leads to background noise that can impact your productivity and relationships. 

Here’s how avoidance manifests:

- You become busy with minor tasks, trying to feel in control.
- You rush your replies to appear useful, masking your inner turmoil.
- You agree to things to avoid conflict, leading to resentment.

Recognizing these patterns is crucial in overcoming avoidance and regaining control over your decision-making process.

In the latest Burn the Rules episode "The Decision You’re Avoiding Is Costing You (Fix It Today)" I talk about how avoidance can feel harmless, but it’s costing you in four major ways:

1. **Energy** – Your mind never gets a break.
2. **Tone** – You might snap at others without realizing it.
3. **Speed** – You delay decisions and then rush to catch up.
4. **Trust** – People sense the tension even if you don’t say a word.

I’ve been there. I used to fill my days with busy work, all while avoiding tough conversations or decisions. It’s not weakness; it’s just a pattern we fall into. 

Right now, I challenge you: complete this sentence out loud – "The decision I’m avoiding is..." Keep it to one sentence. If you struggle, that’s the avoidance talking.

Leadership isn’t about waiting for the perfect choice; it’s about taking responsibility. So ask yourself:

- What decision removes the most noise?
- Which choice creates clarity for others?
- How can you protect your energy?

Remember, clarity doesn’t require guilt. Just be direct and to the point. 

Today’s the day to reclaim your mind. Handle those decisions now, or you’ll carry them into tomorrow.

Support works best when it runs both ways.

Your environment matters more than most people admit.

Who you keep around you will either strengthen your standards or slowly lower them. That’s why your circle should be built on two things:

- People who genuinely support your growth
- People you’re equally willing to support in return

The right relationships aren’t one-way. They’re built on honesty, challenge, respect, and mutual belief.

If the people around you don’t want to see you win or you can’t say the same for them something is off.

Build your circle with intention. It affects everything.

Leading from Within shows up when the room gets noisy and you still make a clean call.

This was a leadership training + talk I ran in Doha.

Roundtables. Leaders. Fast thinking. Zero time for pretending.

The problem on most teams isn’t capability.
It’s drift.

- Everyone has an opinion. Nobody owns the outcome.
- Meetings feel productive. Decisions still crawl.
- Pressure rises. Tone tightens. People go quiet.
- “Alignment” becomes a delay tactic.

What we worked on:

- Make the outcome clear before you speak
- Separate facts from feelings before you react
- Call the real issue without making it personal
- Turn “we” into ownership, not a group hiding place

My reminder on the day:
 “If you can’t lead your state, you’ll leak it.”

Where does your team drift most right now: clarity, ownership, or tone under pressure?

You don’t lose because you had a bad year. You lose because you decided a bad year meant you were done.

Too many people treat a bad day like a final verdict.

One rough day. One slow week. One flat month. A poor year. And they fold on the idea, on the business, on themselves.

I’ve had stretches of years that didn’t go the way I wanted. That’s not failure, that’s part of building anything meaningful.

The real difference between the ones who progress and the ones who stall is simple:

- They show up again after a bad day
- They don’t dramatise a rough patch into a life story
- They keep executing while everyone else is busy overinterpreting the dip

Success in business, leadership, content, whatever your lane is, sits on two pillars:

- Consistency
- Execution

And here’s the part people miss: staying consistent is much easier when you actually like what you’re doing. If you hate the work, every setback feels like a reason to quit.

You don’t need every day to feel good. You need to keep moving on the days that don’t.
