Huge thanks to Jane Serra for the invite to ICON 2025 hosted by Tech Ladies®. The sessions, conversations, and energy were an unexpected level-up as 2025 is rapidly winding down.

You can Google or Perplexity Pearl Collings alongside TIME Inc. or Contently to see all the awesome things she's achieved, but what impressed me most wasn’t her résumé. She wasn’t up on stage speaking at us. She sat with us. Joined us for drinks after. For someone who’s served on boards and built at that level to be that grounded and human, it's refreshing and motivating to stay in this space.

Jane Serra’s session was like hitting “clarity mode.” She led us through a 30-minute exercise that helped me reconnect my work to what actually matters most. (Sharing my notes snapshot below — and if you weren’t there, DM Jane and maybe she'll share her slides!)

And hats off to Madeline LeFevour and the ICON team for curating such an intentional experience. Every detail, from the speakers to the setting, felt built for meaningful, organic convos.

Discovery (first sales) calls are for your buyers to talk, not for you to perform. 

The goal isn’t to fill the silence, it’s to understand what matters most to them.

Last week, I had the privilege of speaking with some incredible founders through Business France — extraordinary founders building extraordinary products.

When international founders enter the U.S. market, they often forget some of the behavioral assets they already own — the instincts that help them listen deeply, read nuance, and adapt fast.

 You’re joining a highly competitive market, yes....but you also have behavioral strengths to leverage.

👀 The U.S. market is digitally mature and product sophisticated.
 👀 Many products already have high efficacy within their competitive set.

So why do people choose one over another?

 It usually comes down to how they’re onboarded, supported, and retained i.e. the emotional and functional design of the entire product experience. You can often glimpse what someone values most in that very first call.

That call shouldn’t be a showcase of your perfect deck slides. Ask them this three days before, and again the day before (if they didn’t respond):

 👉 “What’s the main thing you’re hoping to take away from our meeting tomorrow?”

Your pitch should be about why that person chose to give you 30–60 minutes of their time.

Without that preview, you’re mostly hypothesizing, sweating bullets trying to guess whether you’re hitting their real areas of curiosity. All while also denying yourself the chance to leverage the very strengths that set you apart in the first place.

The brand you build and the one that lives in the mind of your buyers are rarely the same.

That gap (between what you say and what they feel) is where most go-to-market strategies break down.

In my work, I spend a lot of time helping founders and marketing leaders see that difference clearly.

 Because every campaign, every product message, every “big idea” has to compete with how your buyer’s brain actually works, not how your brand deck says it should.

But here’s the part most people miss:
Closing that gap isn’t JUST a marketing challenge but rather a very influential,  leadership one. In the age of AI, we’re being asked to unlearn how we’ve done things for the past decade, so we can learn how to do them for the next.

 That means rethinking how we lead, how we decide, and how we express who we are as a company, from the inside out.
