Today, Diane and I go our separate ways.

After a few intense days in a small Western Cape town, finalising my next book.

Your thesis supervisor keeps saying "think critically".

You nod. You have no idea what they mean. And they are not going to explain it.

Well, critical thinking isn't some abstract academic concept. It's a practical skill you can develop with the right approach.

𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘: 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚

This is where the real work begins. Here's how:

1️⃣ The five whys technique

Pick any argument in your thesis and ask "Why?" five times:

➜ Why is this argument significant?
➜ Why is this evidence credible?
➜ Why does this matter for the research field?
➜ Why hasn't it been addressed before?
➜ Why should readers care about it?

Each "why" takes you deeper into the reasoning.

2️⃣ Be sceptical

When you're reviewing sources, challenge what you read:

➜ What's the author's main argument?
➜ What evidence supports their claims? Is it reliable?
➜ Are there biases or assumptions hiding in the argument?

3️⃣ Challenge your own work

This is the hardest part, but it's crucial:

➜ Are my claims backed by sufficient, credible evidence?
➜ How would a knowledgeable opponent challenge this?

Example: If you've argued that 'X approach is underutilised in the field,' ask yourself: Is that actually true, or have I just overlooked the research that contradicts it? That distinction matters."

What's your biggest challenge with critical thinking?

𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘃𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴
It confused me. It cost me time. Until it clicked.

𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚

You start with specific observations and move toward broader explanations.

You notice patterns. You identify themes. You build theoretical insight from what you observe.

Think: patterns first, explanation second.

Inductive conclusions are 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, not guaranteed. They are evaluated as 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘬, depending on how well the evidence supports them.

EXAMPLE:

➜ You interview 15 postgraduate students. 12 describe feeling isolated during their thesis journey.

➜ From this pattern, you suggest: “Isolation may be a common experience among postgraduate researchers.”

➜ That conclusion isn’t guaranteed. But it’s supported by the evidence. It’s inductively strong, if the data is credible.

𝗗𝗘𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚

You start with a theory or general principle and test whether it holds in a specific case.

You derive expectations (often hypotheses). You collect data. You examine whether the prediction stands.

Think: theory first, testing second.

Deductive arguments are evaluated as 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱. A valid deductive argument guarantees its conclusion if the premises are true.

EXAMPLE:

➜ You start with a theory: “Social support improves academic persistence.”

➜ From that theory, you derive a hypothesis: “Students who report higher levels of support will show lower dropout intentions.”

➜ You collect survey data and test it.

➜ If the logic connecting theory → hypothesis is structured correctly, the argument can be deductively valid, even if the hypothesis turns out to be false.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗢𝗡 𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗨𝗠𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

Many people equate:• Inductive = qualitative
• Deductive = quantitative
But reasoning and method are not the same thing.

You can conduct:• Deductive qualitative research (e.g., theory-driven analysis)
• Inductive quantitative research (e.g., exploratory modelling)
The logic of reasoning is separate from the tools you use.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗨𝗕𝗧𝗟𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

Here’s the part that took me a while to understand:

Validity belongs to deduction. Strength belongs to induction.

Inductive arguments aren’t “invalid.” They simply operate under a different logical standard.

Different logic. Different criteria. Both legitimate.

I created a visual with examples to make sense of this (including the classic 'lucky shirt' fallacy).

"I don't know how to write academically!" I hear this phrase every day. Does that sound like you?

You may be struggling because your thesis doesn’t 𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳.

Read the piece below: “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘔𝘑 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘷𝘢𝘴”

➜ It articulates something I see every single year in thesis coaching.

➜ Strong research is not built in chapters.

➜ It’s built as a coherent system.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗠𝗘:

1️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱. If you can’t clearly state what broader problem you’re helping to solve, your methodology won’t save you.

2️⃣ 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The authors suggest identifying 10–20 scholars who shape your field. That changes everything. Get to know these guys well, and stop writing “about a topic”; start contributing to a debate.

3️⃣ 𝗔 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Your research question should not merely highlight a gap but create tension or challenge assumptions.

4️⃣ 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Data is descriptive. Contribution is interpretive. You must explain how your results change the way we think.

5️⃣ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Strong research clearly states where findings hold and where they might not.

𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗟𝗬:

What this canvas reinforces (and what I teach through The Dale Method) is simple:

A thesis succeeds when every piece fits: the puzzle, the question, the theory, the design, the findings, and the contribution.

It’s not about writing more.

It’s about alignment. And alignment is strategic.

Stop chasing the "perfect" thesis title.

You're wasting time. And every week you spend perfecting your title is a week you're not writing.

Here's what 400+ students taught me about Phase 1 of The Dale Method:

TOPIC CHOICE IS A RISK DECISION, 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗔 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗘𝗫𝗘𝗥𝗖𝗜𝗦𝗘

Most students fall in love with titles before testing feasibility. They confuse interest with researchability.

The real problem? Fear of choosing "wrong".

Put it this way: a good topic is workable, not perfect.

A workable topic has three things: (1) sources exist and are accessible, (2) you can narrow it to a research question you can answer in your timeframe, and (3) it matters enough to you that you'll stay committed when the going gets tough.

𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗧𝗜𝗧𝗟𝗘 𝗪𝗜𝗟𝗟 𝗘𝗩𝗢𝗟𝗩𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗖𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗘:

➜ Your thinking deepens as you dig into literature

➜ Research aims and questions clarify through doing

➜ Commitment creates clarity (not the other way round)

➜ You refine through movement, not before starting

➜ "Aha" moments emerge when you stop overthinking

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗥𝗔𝗠𝗘

You don't need certainty before starting. You need a workable topic that protects your future self.

Clarity comes after movement.

A strong topic reduces cognitive load and lets you focus on what matters: actually writing your thesis.

So stop drifting. Choose. Commit. Refine as you go.

Doing a thesis in stress management sounds brilliant until you realise your thesis IS the stress test.

➜ One moment you're reading about coping strategies.
➜ Next, you're stress-eating biscuits and rewriting your research question for the tenth time.

Managing stress isn't separate from the process. It IS the process.

𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥

✅ Take it one step at a time.
✅ Rest is strategic, not indulgent.
✅ Procrastination is emotional, not laziness. Be kind to yourself.
✅ Confidence follows action. Start small. Start anyway.
✅ You can be capable and struggling at the same time.
✅ Progress includes pauses. A slow week is still a week forward.
✅ There is nothing wrong with you. This is hard because it matters.
✅ Laugh at the chaos. Sometimes that's the most productive thing you can do.

The thesis will push you. It will also teach you resilience, focus, and how to bounce back after a full meltdown over formatting.

➜ The wrong tool, used mindlessly, kills your momentum.
➜ The difference isn't the technology. It's how you use it.

What would 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 Mendeley use look like? For example, those who thrived with Mendeley set up their folder system once and never touched it again. They used it to retrieve, not reorganise.

The question isn't which technology to use. It's whether you're using it to move forward or to feel busy.

Your thesis won't write itself.

Here's the truth: it's always easier to edit than to write the first words. So stop overthinking and just start.

𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗧𝗜𝗣𝗦 𝗧𝗢 𝗚𝗘𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗘𝗗:

➜ Keep your language simple. Express ideas; don't impress readers.

➜ Vary sentence length to maintain interest.

➜ Use transition words to connect paragraphs smoothly.

➜ Avoid vague terms like "some" and "most". Be specific.

➜ Support statements with references from relevant studies.

➜ Struggling? Start with a rough draft in bullet form, then edit later.

➜ Record yourself articulating complex thoughts, and then transcribe them.

𝗚𝗔𝗠𝗘-𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥:

Use AI writing tools like Grammarly or ProWritingAid (and so many others) for editing and grammar checks. They'll catch errors you miss and help polish your work faster.

𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥:

Visual representations break monotony and keep your reader involved.

But explain them properly. Don't just decorate.
