Several years ago, I called my boss after work.

I used to think people got fired for doing something wrong.
Insubordination.
Incompetence.
Stealing.
Negligence.

That’s what we’re taught to believe.

Until the day it happened to me 
Not for doing something wrong,
but for doing the right work…
and getting the “wrong” outcome.

A decision I made based on facts, data, and responsibility led to results the board didn’t expect.

And someone had to take the fall.

The “someone” was me.

I remember weeks of shock.
Frozen.
Confused.
Trying to replay every email, every task, every conversation…
looking for the mistake that wasn’t actually there.

It wasn’t incompetence.
It wasn’t misconduct. 
It wasn’t negligence.

It was politics.
It was convenient.
It was easier to blame a person
than to face a hard truth.

That moment did something to me.

It shook my confidence.
It made me question my instincts.
It made me carry a quiet shame that wasn’t mine to carry.
Because being blindsided like that doesn’t just affect your career,
It affects your self-worth for a long time to come.

But with time, distance, and lots of reflection,
I realized something important:

You can be doing everything right
and still end up on the wrong side of a decision you didn’t create.

That doesn’t make you a failure.
It doesn’t make you the problem.
And it definitely doesn’t make you unworthy.

Sometimes, it simply means the environment you were loyal to
was never loyal to you.

Losing that job felt like loss, trauma, and injustice…
But it also became the beginning of clarity.

Clarity about who I am.
Clarity about how I work.
Clarity about what I deserve.
And clarity about the kind of leader I never want to become.

If you’ve ever lost a job you gave your best to 
not for wrongdoing,
But because someone needed a scapegoat 
Please hear this:

You were never the problem.
You were simply the easiest one to blame.

And that’s not your shame to carry.

Some workplaces don’t fire you for doing the wrong thing.
They fire you for uncovering the truth.

I’ve lived that.
I once delivered accurate work 
Solid numbers, 
Honest, 
And backed by data.

But the result wasn’t convenient.

And instead of addressing the issue,
The board addressed me.

One meeting.
One decision.
One sentence that changed everything.

And suddenly, I wasn’t an employee.
I was the problem they needed to remove.

The shock hits you first.
Then the self-doubt.
Then the quiet shame you carry even though you did nothing wrong.

But here’s what I learned:
Being blamed doesn’t mean you lacked competence.

It could mean your integrity exposed a truth they didn’t want to face.

Sometimes the things we think look messy are just signs that we’re still moving forward.
