But national service and internships are also work experience. Every experience is experience 🤣🤣as far as it is related to what you are looking for. 

It's unfortunate we have trivialised these experiences because we invest little to no time in it to find companies that align with our interests and growth.

For national service in Ghana, most students wait for the government to release postings and they end up in companies that do not challenge them to learn and grow. A lot of private companies advertise or search for final year students every year to have national service with them. 

These companies share details of the students they want to train directly with the National service secretariat. These are companies that are really interested in your growth and exposure. Most students will not listen and take this proactive step. They will relax and waste a whole year.

Though it is becoming difficult to get companies' response when you reach out, but you will definitely get it when you prepare, reach out to different companies and push for several times.

The truth is, if a company needs someone with 3 years of experience but you have just 1 year that reflects what they want, they will give you the job. I have sat in interviews where some people didn't meet the length of experience but they proved what they have done and could do with the less experience they had and they got the opportunities.

Don't leave your internship, national service or any training opportunity to chance especially when you are starting. Be intentional about it.

Something happened to me in level 100 at the university. Fresh from senior high school, I was naive and even had doubts about my program of study.

It was the second month of the first semester, and I came across a mentorship program funded by one of Ghana's famous individuals. 

I saw 'Curriculum Vitae' in the requirements and got confused 🤣. In Ghana, you hardly hear any of this career stuff when you are in Senior High School. I knew nothing about a curriculum vitae or CV.
I don't know how I got the audacity to reach out to the team.

I called, and a lady answered. After expressing my concern, she angrily responded, "You don't know a Curriculum vitae, and you are at the university? I don't have time for that." She ended the call. All the enthusiasm I had to apply for the program vanished. 

That was when the spirit of self-learning, and curiosity started. It's funny how I have taught many people to write their CVs professionally for opportunities, the same thing I was ridiculed for.

Some freshmen at the university or any tertiary institution find themselves in the same situation. Don't be like me🤣🤣🤣. You may have no idea of something yet, and that’s okay. We are all learning everyday. Do your research first before you approach people to ask questions.

I tried the first time. I tried the second time. I gave up!

In Luke 18:1–5, there was a widow who kept going to a judge with one request: “Grant me justice against my adversary.”

The judge neither feared God nor cared about people, yet he eventually granted her plea because the widow kept bothering him. ‭
The judge said, "because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!”

Persistence.

Persistence is really hard. You put in the effort. You try again and again and nothing seems to work.

You submit job applications, no response.
You send emails and initiate conversations at work to get some approvals but nothing.
You fail at something on your first attempt and immediately decide, “I won’t try that again.”

You doubt and question yourself. You feel frustrated and tired.

But what if you don’t stop at the first few attempts? The widow kept disturbing the judge, and that persistence changed the outcome.

Your persistence can soften a difficult person. Your persistence can move you closer to what you have been working so hard for.

I have had moments where I gave up fully.
I allowed myself to feel the disappointment, paused, breathed, readjusted, pushed again and it worked.

If you need to pause, breathe, and adjust, do it without shame. Just don’t stop too early.

Life has taught me that you may not always get results after a few attempts. Sometimes, you need to go the extra mile.
But you can stop when you have truly tried every possible means, and it's still not working.
Be persistent.

Peer pressure influenced the Israelites too🤔. I have been reflecting on this lately.


In 1 Samuel 8, Israel asked for a king, but not for the right reason.
They wanted to be like the other nations around them who had kings. They insisted, despite warnings. Samuel anointed Saul, and he became the first king of Israel.

You know how that ended?
Saul disobeyed God, Israel suffered the consequences, and God rejected Saul’s kingdom.

This feels very familiar, especially in the social media era.

“I want to pursue this because a lot of people are making money from it.”
“I want to be like this person and have what he has.”

There is nothing wrong with admiring people’s growth and success. It is okay to desire progress, but do it with purpose.

Israel did not ask for a king because they needed leadership. They asked because others had one. That decision led them astray.

Don’t do something just because everyone else is doing it. Ask questions, and be clear about your purpose and motives.

What works for someone may not work for you no matter how hard you try.

There are a lot of misconception and negative tags about this HR profession.

I help busy professionals save 30+ hours weekly by taking full ownership of their operations | Executive Assistant & Operations Support

For the last 3 weeks, I've been trying to fill a role in our company.

And honestly? I finally understand why founders say hiring is one of the hardest parts of running a business.

Right now, we can't afford a professional HR person.

So guess who's handling recruitment?

Me.

As the EA and Operations person, I'm the one screening candidates, conducting interviews, and trying to find the right fit.

And since I'll be supervising this person anyway, it made sense for me to take it on.

I studied Public Administration.
I understand people management.

So I thought, "Okay, I can do this."

But let me tell you - this process has been exhausting.

I've encountered so many candidates who look perfect on paper.

They say they have years of experience.
They use all the right terminology.
They talk about platforms like Upwork like they've been using it forever.

But then you ask them specific questions.

You test their knowledge.

And suddenly, they don't know what they're talking about.

They can't explain what they've actually done.
They can't walk you through their process.

It's all surface-level.

And honestly? I'm tired.

Before this, I used to hear HR people complain about how hard it is to find good people.

And I'll be honest - I thought maybe they were exaggerating.

Like, how hard can it be?

What do you mean you can't find the right fit after interviewing 1k people? 

You dey whine? 😆 

But now I get it.

It's not just about finding someone with the right skills on paper.

It's about finding someone who actually knows what they're doing.
Someone who can think.
Someone you can trust to handle the work without you micromanaging.

And that person is rare.

This whole experience made me realize what HR people through.

The hours spent reviewing applications.
The energy spent on interviews that go nowhere.
The frustration of thinking you found someone, only to realize they're not it.

And on top of everything else they're managing, they have to do this.

No wonder hiring is draining.
