The contents did not match the label...


When he hired me, he said:

→ 25% travel
→ Path to Executive Director
→ Equity in the company
→ Collaborative culture
→ Flexible work schedule

The label had everything I wanted.

The contents were vastly different:

→ 4 cities in 5 days 
→ Constantly changing organizational structure
→ Fraction of the equity promised
→ Tyrant for a manager
→ 5 days in the office plus answer emails on weekends

This was the only job in my 25-year career I walked out on.

I left my laptop with a manager at 8:30 in the morning.

He asked, "Is there anything we can do?"

I shook my head and walked out.

The next day I started at a new company.

I had done my homework on this new job.

→ I researched their business and culture
→ I interviewed them more than they interviewed me
→ I checked the hiring manager's references
→ I got everything we verbally agreed in writing

When I look back on this time, it was one of the worst and one of the best experiences in my career:

⛔️ It was the most toxic environment I ever worked in

✅ I learned how to recognize when the content doesn't match the label before opening the box

One of my clients is negotiating an offer. The company wanted him on board yesterday, but he's not jumping yet.


He's turning over every rock and digging deep into the company and people 👏

He's doing his due diligence, logically and methodically learning everything he can before he accepts the offer.

He's going through what I call, the 4 KNOWS.

What are the 4 KNOWS and why are they so important?

The 4 KNOWS are important to him because he's coming out of a toxic environment where promises were made and broken, and unrealistic goals were set and forced on him.

He's felt unstable, uncomfortable, and insecure for a while now.

And he doesn't want to repeat this experience.

The 4 KNOWS minimize the downside risk of what you don't know.

They set you up for SUCCESS and FULFILLMENT in your next role.

Here are the 4 KNOWS:

1. KNOW yourself
→ The skills and responsibilities you want in your next role
→ The type of culture you thrive in
→ Where this role fits in your career vision

2. KNOW the company
→ The products they put out into the world should excite you
→ Their reputation should make you feel proud to join them
→ Their track record should be stellar

3. KNOW your manager
→ Does their management style support you?
→ Is this someone you can partner with to deliver and grow?
→ If you ran into them outside the office, would you say hello or walk the other way?

4. KNOW your team
→ You'll be in the trenches with them. How does that make you feel?
→ Would they have your back or stab you in the back?
→ Do they fit your style and personality?

Knowing as much as possible about the environment you'll be working in and the people you'll be working with before you sign on the dotted line is how you set yourself up for success.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, have conversations, and get to know everything you can about where you will be spending 40-60 hours of your week.

Your future self will thank you.

8 years ago as a rising financial services executive👇

❌ I had the time and energy to wake up at 5 AM and work until 8 PM but no time to read a bedtime story to my kids. 

❌ I answered work emails past 9pm, complained about insomnia, and medicated myself to fall asleep. 

❌ I had two panic attacks in one week and told my doctor I needed a higher dose of medication to function at work.

❌ My wife needed a medical procedure and asked me to be there and I made her feel guilty about making me miss work. 

That was the guy on the left. 

He looked successful on the outside.

But he was a mess on the inside. 

He had all the wrong priorities. 

It took a few more years of suffering, struggling, and being "displaced" by my employer before I realized:

✨ We have one life and it’s short. 

✨ My health and my family come first. 

✨ Hustling and grinding is not living. 

I figured out my priorities and values.

I found work and a company that aligns with how I want to live. 

I became the guy on the right.

6 Strategies to Ace Your Interviews

7 things I struggled with as an executive before I changed careers:



1. No time and energy for my family
→ I'd work 12-hour days and collapse with a beer on the couch instead of spending time with my family.

2. Being irritable and short-tempered with my family
→ My frustrations with work came home with me and I'd flare up at my family for no good reason.

3. Choosing work over health
→ I had no time to exercise or meditate. I worked from the moment I woke up until I went to bed.

4. Working long hours to prove I was dedicated
→ From 7 to 9, I was plugged into work. I’d even answer emails on weekends.

5. I was in constant fear
→ Even though I worked hard, I always feared that I wasn’t delivering enough and could lose my job at any moment.

6. Frustrated I wasn’t climbing higher fast enough
→ I expected more money, better titles, and promotions every year. If they didn't come I'd get frustrated and depressed.

7. Unable to enjoy my successes 
→ No matter how much I earned and achieved, it was never enough. There was always something missing. Happiness was always just out of reach.

Writing this list, I can feel my heart thumping in my chest and my anxiety rising.

That’s how I felt back then. Every. Damn. Day.

If you see yourself in anything written here, it’s a red flag.

There are students in my group coaching program right now who are dealing with similar situations and feelings.

And they decided to change.

They didn’t throw their hands in the air and quit their jobs.

They aren’t jumping at the first thing that comes their way.

These students are smarter than that.

They are being intentional and thoughtful.

They are creating boundaries with their current jobs to have time to work on landing their next role.

They are getting healthy, incorporating daily exercise and meditation into their lives so they have clear eyes and clear minds.

They are moving forward deliberately and at a pace that doesn’t cause them any additional stress.

They are figuring out EXACTLY what they want their career and life to look like after they pivot.

And then working with me to create a plan to GO GET IT.

You have the same choice.

This is the real work of a career change and it’s not something you can achieve by reading posts on LinkedIn.

You need to take that first step, and then another, and keep moving in that direction until you become who you want to be.

5 things I know now, I wish I knew 25 years ago:




❇️ Money and titles lose their value when my work makes me unhappy. 

❇️ I decide whether my thoughts and beliefs will free me or imprison me. 

❇️ Time is the most valuable currency. Spend it wisely before it runs out. 

❇️ I don’t need to be great at everything. Being great at one thing is enough to create joy, wealth, and a fulfilling life. 

❇️ My family needs me to be present and feel how much I love them more than they need a big house, a new car, or an iPhone.

Growing up I had a friend who knew he wanted to be a lawyer in the 7th grade. 

That has never been me.

What I have wanted from work and for my life has changed as I've learned, experienced, incorporated, and grown. 

My friend's career path has been a straight line.

My career has been a winding road. 

What has been consistent in my career is staying loyal to enjoying what I do as the seasons of my life have changed.

Both paths are equally fulfilling and available to everyone.

There is no one path through life and career.

There are infinite options which we can choose from.
