I do believe who you choose as your partner (in life & business) is one of the most impactful decisions you can have on your life.

She & I met later in life (I divorced young) & think we both had a chance to "live" a bit before we settled down; which in some ways I'm grateful for. She & I always joke that we may not have fallen for each other as our "23 year old selves"; but we both evolved a bit & then found each other back in 2014.

Some things I learned through our relationship:

- It's not always about being right. Pick your battles wisely. Most things aren't really that big of a deal. Don't go to bed mad.

- You have to keep dating. This is hard with kids & busy lives; but we try. We always go out for a meal 1-2X a month solo; no kid. You can't forget the relationship that put the kid here; it's important to keep love active. Love isn't saying "I love you" it's showing love.

- Partnership allows the couple to always give 100%; but this means that sometimes one partner can only give 10% & the other partner needs to put in the work to give the other 90% & vice versa.

- Relationships doesn't mean we do everything together either. We have a lot of separate hobbies. I didn't see this in my younger relationships. As I've aged; I realize that everyone needs to find fulfillment themselves, and this is through a bunch of ways (personal, work, family, hobbies, etc). Your partner can't "make" you happy & nor should you rely on them to be your social life. 

- Trust is sacred. Don't burn it.

Why it works?

- Flexible & modular

- My cost is people; so our prices are fair & attainable (3/5/10K retainers) & can handle hourly work

- Nuanced expertise 

- (This one is KEY!) alignment & motivation to work together. If you piece together 3 agencies yourself; guess what? They don't really want to work w/ that other group. They might say they do; but it's not really on their bingo card. Because I pay everyone & manage them & we have a shared process; we work together well; so the Shopify dev can interface with Hubspot consultant internally as needed...Or ads team can work directly w/ the web dev. Internal alignment makes this work.  

- No long-term contracts. We start with a sprint (2-3 months); then we earn your business. I've got 6 clients with us currently who have been with us for 2+ years on month to month agreements. 

- No bandwidth issues. Many groups push their internal teams too much & take on more work than ideal. We can work in different designers, dev, ads teams, etc as we need.

Many THC bev brands are looking to have a mix of online (DTC) traffic as well as location based (retail) organic traffic.

Many brands are still growing / newer &  their organic presence can be smaller.

Wells Westmoreland & I worked on a newer DTC marketplace last year & wanted to share the case study.

Some highlights:

SEO case study: ~5 to ~80 clicks/day in 4 months for a THC drink marketplace. Here’s what we did:

1. Built category pages

Our client doesn’t just sell THC drinks. They sell:

- THC soda
- THC root beer
- THC mocktails
- THC drinks for sleep
- THC drinks for anxiety
- 5mg THC drinks
- 10mg THC drinks

… so we built product category pages for these keywords and many more. 

Now they have an opportunity to rank for every keyword that indicates someone wants what they're offering. 

2. Built location pages

We didn’t just want to get our client in front of people searching for THC drinks to buy online – we wanted to get them in front of people looking for THC drinks near them to try and get them to buy online instead. 

So, we built out ~40 pages (one for every state our client ships to), then built pages for key cities in key states (~60 total). 

As a result, our client gets traffic from “thc drinks near me” searches all over the nation. 

3. Wrote bottom-of-funnel blog posts

Now it was time for the blog content. But we didn’t do the typical “what are THC drinks” educational slop blog posts – we focused on revenue-driving keywords like:

→ brez vs hiyo
→ brez alternatives
→ hiyo alternatives

And so on. 

People are researching your competitors everyday. Blog content is how you throw your hat in the ring and show them you’re better.

THC SEO Case Study: 5 → 80 Clicks/Day for a THC Drink Marketplace

Running paid ads should not be your first growth lever.

I had a call with a  founder yesterday who was building spreadsheets & plans fo a new CPG company. 

I asked where they were in their process.

They did not have a brand, messaging / positioning, website, product market fit yet; so lot of work ahead before ready to launch. 

I asked, "What do you view your path to scaling"

They said, "Paid ads".

They envisioned starting month 1 with a 10K a month ad budget & hitting 6-figs in revenue in short order.

This could work; but I'd expect to burn some cash & make some mistakes. The big ad channels (Meta, Google, Reddit, LinkedIn, etc) require clear creative plans & can be complete duds. Beyond this; in highly regulated sectors; this is even more challenging due to creative limits. 

Beyond that; for a CPG company; you're likely going to lose money on first purchase; so if your retention game isn't tight & you can drive a 5:1 LTV:CAC ratio; ads will just be burning money into a hole. 

The majority of early wins should come from:

- Product seeding & affiliates (can control this tightly)
- SEO (Google Shopping, Category pages, location pages, etc)
- Organic social (harder to do now than before)
- Flexing network (friends, family, local pop-ups, etc)

Offer reduced costs on initial order & focus on building a re-order rate that is viable. For example; offer a reduced cost sampler pack & then focus on getting a viable % to come back & repurchase.

Ads can help test positioning angles & can add fuel to fire when you know something works; but it's a very difficult channel to nail out of the gate.
