I almost didn't start my company! 
The wrong advice from the wrong person can quietly cost you years.

When I first considered starting Shenomics - the mindful leadership platform I’ve now been running for 10+ years - someone I deeply respected, a mentor, told me:

“Don’t do it. The space is too crowded.”

For a moment, I listened. Disheartened. 
I almost reconsidered my decision.

But I couldn’t shake the vision I had. 

And so, I trusted my conviction over their caution.

10 years later:

All of that might never have happened if I had taken the wrong advice.

We live in a world overflowing with opinions:

The key to winning your day?

If International Women’s Day is only about flowers and LinkedIn posts, we’ve missed the point.

IWD began as a movement in 1911 demanding equal pay and equal rights for women at work.

More than a century later, while progress has been made - 
the work isn’t finished.

At the current pace, the world is still 123 years away from gender parity.

That means none of us alive today will see it fully achieved.

To accelerate the pace, here are 5 things we can be mindful of: 

1️⃣ Don’t Give Women Flowers - Give Them Equal Pay

A bouquet is thoughtful.
But what matters more is a paycheck that reflects the value of a woman’s work.

The global gender pay gap still sits at roughly 20%.

This year, instead of chocolates and roses, start with something more meaningful:

→ Conduct a pay equity audit.

2️⃣ Don’t Put Women on a Pedestal - Give Them Equal Opportunity

Women don’t need to be called “superwomen.”

We need:
→ fair promotions
→ equal access to leadership roles
→ and real seats at decision-making tables.

Equality matters more than praise.

3️⃣ Don’t Make Gender Equality a One-Day Event

If gender initiatives start and end on March 8, something is missing.

Real progress happens when organizations invest in:
→ leadership pipelines
→ sponsorship programs
→ policies that support advancement year-round.

4️⃣ Don’t Tell Women to “Be More Confident” - Address Bias Instead

For years, women have been told to:
 “speak up more,”
 “lean in,”
 or “negotiate harder.”

But many barriers aren’t about confidence.
They’re about systems, bias, and culture.

Let’s fix the environments women work in.

5️⃣ Don’t Just Celebrate Women - Invest in Them

Posting about inspiring women leaders is easy.

Real commitment looks like:
→ promoting women
→ sponsoring talent
→ funding women-led initiatives
→ building inclusive leadership teams.

Recognition matters.
But action matters more.

✨ This International Women’s Day, the question isn’t:
“How are we celebrating women?”
It’s: “What are we changing so women can thrive?”

5 Things NOT to Do on IWD

Self-doubt doesn't make you weak. 
It shows you care about doing it well. 

We talk about confidence
as if it means having no doubt.

But the truth is -
the people who care the most, doubt the most.

Because they hold themselves to higher standards.
Because they want to get it right.
Because they lead with empathy, not ego.

That doubt before a new role, a big decision, a bold idea?
It’s not a sign you’re unready.
It’s a sign you care.

In the story, the young eagle asks:
🦅 “What if I fail?”
And the wise owl replies:
“Then you’ll learn what your wings are made of.
Doubt isn’t weakness - it’s awareness.”

But, it's also important to remember...

Confidence doesn’t come before action.
It comes from action.

Every time you try - even if you stumble -
you teach your wings how to trust the air beneath them.

This is what psychologists call The Confidence–Competence loop:
Act → Learn → Believe → Repeat.

Courage always comes first.
And for many women in leadership,
doubt doesn’t mean lack of confidence -
it’s the residue of being judged for tone, presence, or perfection for too long.

We’ve been taught to over-edit and overthink.
But not to trust our wings.

It’s time to change that story.

The sky doesn’t belong to the certain.
It belongs to the curious.
To those willing to fly before they feel ready.

Because confidence isn’t a prerequisite.
It’s a result.
