Can You Put Family on Your Business Payroll?

Yes, you can put your kids or partner on your payroll - whether you're a limited company or even a sole trader (if you're big enough). But the real question is… should you? 🤔

If they're genuinely working in your business and being paid a fair market rate, this can be a tax-efficient move. For example, you can't pay your child £500 a month for doing three social posts - HMRC will not be impressed! ⚖️

The same applies to partners. If they already earn well elsewhere, the tax benefit for your business could be wiped out by higher personal tax. So while it's a great option in the right circumstances, it's not a blanket solution everyone should follow. 💡

True story. Honestly. 

Business owners are so scared of facing their numbers that they’ll try literally anything apart from what will actually solve the problem. 

If you don’t know if what you’re selling is going to make you enough money to live on, you’re doing things very wrong. 

Probably you started the business not believing in yourself so you think paying attention to the numbers isn’t for you. 

Then when you don’t make enough money you prove yourself right that you’re rubbish and get to stay in that lovely shame cycle.

But what if you actually took yourself seriously, backed your skills and made some real money? Wouldn’t that be a treat.

Manifesting prices

You don't know what you don't know.

Even worse is that you don't know what you don't know you don't know.

That sentence is a bit of a headache isn't it. 

Much like realising you've when you DIYed your accounts you only filed the accounts not the corp tax and are now getting £100 fines every week. 

Or when you've done your bookkeeping yourself, reclaimed VAT on everything not realising not everything has VAT charged on it.

Or when you keep paying yourself without having a clue if your business can actually afford it and then get told "you've got an overdrawn directors loan account." 

Experts exist for a reason. Recently I was told most people when launching a new service have the full campaign including content and materials planned weeks ahead of the launch.

It seems so obvious now I know that, but for years I've created the content after I've launched the idea into the world and wondered why I struggled. 

You don't know what you don't know.

But you can guarantee someone else does know. So why not let them do the knowing and you get on doing what you know.
