From 2007 till 2012 I was on the Oklahoma State University Golf Team. At that time, the golf team was ranked as the best college golf team in the US twice, while being in the Top 3 every single year. I played several events alongside my team mates of which many have become very successful professional golfers after their college career. Rickie Fowler, Peter Uihlein, Morgan Hoffman, Kevin Tway, Sean Einhaus and Taylor Gooch are some of them who play professionally on the highest level (PGA Tour, European Tour).

After having been in the Bavarian state team for 5 years, I was called into the German national team at the end of the 2003 golf season. 

During my time on the team, I played several team championships including the European Team Championship. Also, I represented my country in well over 20 international individual events.
My biggest individual achievement during that time came in 2005, when I became the first German to win the prestigious The Boys Amateur Championship.

10 days of training the mind in absolute silence.
(can you see the difference?)

Yesterday, I finished my seventh Vipassana silent meditation retreat. 

10 days, no talking, no writing, no reading, no outside communication. Completely alone with my thoughts.

Why have I spent 70 days of my life already sitting in silence?

Because this meditation technique sharpens the mind, teaches me equanimity (observing rather than judging), and helps me create a gap between thought and reaction (meaning, nothing triggers you).

I want to share three realizations I had:

1. I missed only two things, even having nothing other than simple clothes, and two clean meals a day.

I didn't miss TV, didn't miss Social Media. I felt silly, cause it is not living live. There is no life lived in watching random TV shows. It really doesn't feel like what life is all about.

The only two things were family & friends (people) and exercising my body.

How about that ... 

2. We run away from our thoughts all day. Coming into the retreat, I was quite calm, collected, felt at peace. 

Very different story after one day alone with my thoughts. Literally hundreds shooting wildly and sometimes violently through my head.

Where were they coming from? 

They were there all the time. But with a phone always at hand, thousands of great distractions at your fingertips, I just always managed to run away from them.

The lesson for me: Next time I don't have anything in particular to do and I turn to my phone, I'm going to stop myself there, take out a pen and paper, and write what's on my mind.

3. How is training the mind not the most normal thing humans do?

Sure, humans learn things daily, we have schools and universities, and learn on the job or do further education. 

But, that is not the type of training I mean.

What I mean is becoming the master of your mind. Being able to think thoughts clarely and on the other hand not being overwelmed by thoughts, coupled with emotions.

Our mind is our best friend, but often also our worst enemy. It dictates 100% what kind of experience of life you have. 100%. Everything you experience is subjective and interpreted by your mind. How your mind works and how you can focus and control it makes all the difference in your life. It's everything.

And yet, I'm an outlier for training it daily and intensively in those 10-day retreats.

Makes no sense.

It makes sense to most of humanity to train and take care of the body (fitness, nutrition, supplements, medicine). Everyone in the world comes into contact with it daily. 

How are we not doing the same for the mind? The thing that literally runs the show.
