I'm typically invited in by MDs and CEOs, both within the UK and globally. They have successful and ambitious companies. They believe they have great sales people. However they have, perhaps reluctantly, identified that sales is a bottle neck for growth. 

They can be feeling frustrated at this and are willing to ask the question; Are my sales people really doing the best they can?

I'll be direct, I am not for everyone. Elevating great sales people to A players with sales training is a process, not an event.The reason people say No to me is because they don't want or believe they can control the sales process. They fear change and fear stepping outside their comfort zone.

I learned the hard way that the failure to understand communication psychology was......

Seriously, watch the clip below and figure out what went wrong, from a human communication perspective.

It's not what was said, as offensive as it was, that is the lesson, but why it happened that caused the breakdown in communication.

It was failing to understand what was happening beneath the words. 

This looked like a room full of adults talking, doesn't it?

But that's not the case.

Internally we speak from different personalities.

We have 3 major personalities:

Parent - all all how to's and how nots, beliefs, values, etc

Adult - logic and in the moment, facts.

Child - Our feelings, our emotions, our curiosity, out playfulness

(Obviously, this is not an extended or exhaustive definition, but sufficient for a post!)

We flick between these personalities like the speed of light within our own mind and during communication interactions.

One minute you're coming from your adult, the next your child...instantly.

This clip demonstrates it, perfectly.

When David Brent was talking about Donna, daughter of his best friend, he was coming from his ADULT. He was imparting information (factual) in the moment.

A member of staff let his CHILD respond with a playful comment "I've some evidence..."

EVERYONE LAUGHS (except Donna)

At this moment everyone was coming and responding from their CHILD - laughing, having fun.

Then another colleague's CHILD (swollen goods) makes their comment, and everyone's CHILD laughs, again.

The the third child makes a comment (her tunnel), thinking it's a funny one - but the room fills with ADULT and PARENT instantly.

"Get out" says Brent. His PARENT kicks in.

One joke too far and within a split second the group and leader flicked to another personality.

What has this to do with sales?

You lose more deals by trying to be you, than you do be pleasing a room.

Selling is about understanding where your prospect is coming from, not you being smart.
